what to do with pieces of granite?
Comments (11)I also had the good fortune of acquiring a nice supply of granite, marble and soapstone. The pieces are of varying sizes, some as large as 3' x 4'. I am using them to create outdoor fountains and other types of lawn sculpture. I have invested in a variety of diamond cutting tools and am learning as I go. My favorite piece so far is a fountain that has a rusty steel I-beam standing vertically piercing through the center of a piece of dark green/black granite. The granite is fastened at an angle. It was a challenge cutting an I-shaped channel in the piece of granite, but it was worth it! I supplied recirculated water to the top edge of the granite slab through a simple copper pipe and the water drips off the lower edge into a small ABS tub mouted in the ground. The tongue-in-cheek name for the sculpture is... I-Beam Taken for Granite...See Morei just paid $1600 for a 2.5'x3' piece of granite.
Comments (24)Kate, Please accept my sympathy, I'm so sorry for your loss. I saw your post early this morning and I've been thinking all day about what to say. When my mother passed away right before Thanksgiving I couldn't decide whether I was relieved or sad. We had already lost her to Alzheimer's 5 years ago. She would have been 89 this spring and she was such a wonderful strong, smart, talented and funny woman that I spent a long time being angry that she was gone even before she left us forever. Someone said in an earlier post that they still saw glimmers of their mother despite the Alzheimer's and this was so true for my mother even until the day before she died. Oddly, after my mother died I started to realize that I had her back as she was for most of her life, as I and my brothers and sister remembered her. During her long decline we were dealing with everything of the day to day she needed but couldn't do for herself. After she went to be with the God she so devoutly believed in she came back to us in all of our great memories. One blessing we had, or maybe two, in choosing a headstone: 1) our cousins who had gone through burying their mother earlier in the year talked us out of making an immediate decision, and 2) even when we thought we were capable of making a rational decision the company that specialized in grave markers told us we had to wait until spring because the ground was still frozen otherwise we might have had pink granite because my sister insisted that was my mother's favorite color even though everyone knew she only told my sister that because my sister loved it so much. My sister finally admitted that she knew Mom was only humoring her when she was a pre-teen infatuated with pink, LOL. Hang in there. I know your Mom was wonderful and how much it hurts but hang on to your sister and the rest of your family because they know how great your Mom was too....See MoreTwo pieces of bacon and the elusive perfect granite...(pic heavy)
Comments (36)I am not a decorator or have a very good eye for colour. However Neither of those things has stopped me from expressing an opinion. So here goes - I love the brick wall in combination with your cabinets. I am assuming that your wet bar will be the same cabinets as in the kitchen. (Maybe some glass uppers in the wet bar to lighten the area) The effect of the two of them is warm and elegant. The brick wall has pattern in it. It has the pattern of shape, small rectangular and the pattern of colour. When you stand back and look at it as a whole the colour pattern is large with its reds, oranges and golds. (maybe its my monitor but that's what it looks like). Your floor (I think the smaller tile is your floor) has the same tones in it and you have yet to mention plans for hardware, lighting fixtures or backsplash. The other patterns that you have going on is that of your sofa and armchair - unless they are being changed. The other thing is what is your focal point and I think you have already decided that it is going to be your cabinets/brick wall and I agree. I think that they are fabulous together. My point in bringing this all up is that I am afraid that if you choose any of the granites that you have suggested (except perhaps African Ivory or maybe Bordeaux Sienna) is that you are going to wind up with a riotous jumble of reds and oranges (perpetual Fall) and all sorts of pattern sizes with no cohesiveness to the area . The granite should support your focal point and not try to compete. As mentioned here several times as well - your eye needs somewhere to rest and I haven't seen where that would be. But maybe that is the plan for the backsplash. I would step back and think about what else you have planned for the space before making a final decision on the granite. My opinion for what it's worth....See MoreNeed ideas for island countertop..the last piece of the puzzle!
Comments (41)Hey Scuzz....I'm with cluelessincolorado. You said your home is eclectic and the island is certainly large. Mix it up! Think about how you will use it; consider where you need what type of surface and use the existing tones to choose zones. Zinc or stainless would work well with the stainless/brushed nickel fittings- or- the kit could handle a little white- or - wood to warm it up. IF you do mix, use only two surfaces and make certain one is a solid (ie stainless & marble, white dekton & wood, the existing quartz color & zinc) Beautiful job, BTW. In both layout and decor, it's a room I'd love working and just spending time in....See Morelynne_melb
