We made the support from bamboo stakes. DH did, at my request. He drilled holes in the bamboo (not easy) and tied them together with gardening wire. Cutting it was difficult, too. Not a climber, but it almost looks like it could be one. I have a feeling the support could easily be another foot high. We'll see. Kathy

Hi Modjadje & Monica!- I asked around online & never did get the exact response I was hoping for, so thanks for your fresh input. I was hoping to find someone who remembered doing the same project back when. The local ceramic shops are now closed, so I can't talk to anyone except for the art dept. at the local university where I took some hand-building classes. I am still hoping to come across some of mom's old class notes & magazines. Here's a rough sketch of the basket. It was about 8 inches in diameter and about the smae height to the top of the handle. The sides were maybe 2.5 inches high. Whatever the "ribs" were that the clay was woven around burned out in the kiln, so it left a small diamond-shaped space. If you look at the handle, the now-missing ribs ran width-wise, so I'm not sure what the original support had been. I seem to remember a thick yarn like rug yarn, and a plastic container cut down in strips...maybe a waxy cardboard ice cream container? The bottom was also woven, not a slab. Maybe I am wrong and it was woven before being soaked in slip, but I can see a bowl of clay-soaked yarn in my mind. I think the concept has potential to be quite creative beyond a humble little egg basket! Lia- Cool! I did not know that baskets could only be made by hand. I'll have to suggest the aspirin to my parents. I know they used to give him but i think it was coated and I'm not sure if they are still giving it to him. He is not completely emptying his bowels. Its probably more like 'sawed off turds' and this happens when he's struggling to get up. This is the reason I'm reluctant to take what the vet says about him not feeling it as the reason for it. He's struggling to get up from lying down and he's straining himself. If he's experiencing pain while trying to get up, as well as just straining to get up, he's not likely to clench his butt cheeks tighter to prevent an accident (if he's in pain then that is what he's feeling not the passage of stool). The problem with Jessie is that he has always been a quiet dog. My mom said she never heard him bark until he was 5 years old. One afternoon (and it scared her) but he was barking at the hot air balloons that were going overhead (he still barks at the mention of balloons). He makes a mumbling sound, kind of like 'woo, woo' because he did that as a puppy and my dad would do it back so they'd talk like this, lol. If he wants food he usually does this noise and if no one gives him food he just gets louder and eventually barks. I can't say I've ever heard him whine. When he wants to go out he usings his snout to hit the door handle and it makes a rattling noise with the key in it (the really old type of keys). So its difficult to see if he's in pain except the way he walks you can tell if he's stiff, especially in the morning. The problem with my brother is that he rarely comes over especially when my dad's around (he works evening shift so he's gone in the evenings). It would be hard to get them together. We are all going out for dinner to celebrate my parents retirement but that's not until June and I'm not sure that's the best time to bring up doggie accidents. But I'll see if my brother will mention something if they cross paths.

She's just 50, so it took me a bit to get to the root of my anger? if that's what it is. But 50....too young, her young adult kids still need her. I am very, Very angry about that. And of course, I am constantly asking myself "Why?" But talking with her yesterday, we agreed...well, she made me agree....that "WE" are not going to put our life on hold just because she's not feeling well (that's what she calls it...not feeling well). Not exact wording but her attiude is .... Hey, I am not in a casket yet so why the sad faces? Let's live each day for what it is. Plenty of time to be sad later. Today, today we visit, chat, gossip, talk about our kids, laugh and go on with life. Okie Dokie. I will respect her wishes. But I did take all day yesterday to regroup and I stayed completely out of the kitchen. Today I will go in there (after Mom is done doing whatever she is doing in there...have no idea but I hear pots and pans clanging. lol) and with a fresh start, fresh attitude, I will be back here with the photo album with new pics added and PLENTY OF QUESTIONS...so don't say I didn't warn ya all!
