Corian countertops - what to do with scraps?

My friend has been offered a lot of leftover Corian that can be cut in any shape. He's looking for suggestions on what he could do with it (his FIL has a flea market booth that sells stuff). Household, garden, whatever...

Any ideas?

My thoughts:

Cutting boards

Plant stands of some sort

If he can, cut them into very straight small blocks. Make a few bags of kids blocks. I bet he is able to get really cool colors. Kids still love to build with blocks.

We built a house the same year we bought a vacation condo: 2001. The condo has off white Corian counter tops with an integral double sink. It's seamless and warm to the touch. If the condo were not a vacation rental-- or if guests would not cut ON the counter -- I doubt we would have had to have it resurfaced, but we did -- once. Our house has Costa Esmerelda (sp?) granite counter tops. It's freezing cold and you can see the seams. I have never had to treat it against stains -- just wipe with a damp cloth -- no buffing dry. I clean cooktops, sinks and Corian with Bon Ami powder. (Can with the little chick and the slogan, "Hasn't scratched yet.")

Hi All! I have learned sooooo much on this site. Thank you Mr. Corlett. I have had Corian countertops since 1998 with a granite composite under mount sink. Love the Corian, not the sink so much because it seems yellowed since installed. But I do a lot of canning so the sink has put up with a lot of beet juice and boiling hot water with minimal distress, no cracks. Just clean with Soft Scrub and bleach sometimes. We are now building a house. I am again using Corian for the countertops. I am considering either a Corian integrated sink 850 or an LG-HiMacs integrated sink 3118. I do not like the sink drain in the center of the sink as in the 3118 but that sink is an inch and a half longer than the Corian so better for skillet handles to fit in sink. Do you have an opinion as to the staining or cracking or other issue of either product I might consider before making my final decision? Thank you. Cynthia

When we bought this house, the kitchen had arctic white Corian counter tops and an integrated tiny-tiny-itty-bitty shallow sink. The door into the dining room is too close to the sink wall for the lower cabinets to be full depth, (too close to put a dishwasher in the sink wall, either). I think that is a large part of why the prior owner, way back when, who put in the Corian, went with such a tiny sink. A drop-in 22" deep sink is not possible with this depth of counter top. We weren't ready for remake of the kitchen at that time, but really wanted a oversized sink so we bought a large single copper, living surface apron front. This was 5-6 years ago. It took an old-school Corian installer less than one day to cut out the old sink and install the new (under mount, apron front), including bringing several leftover samples of arctic white from the 80's from his backyard heap of leftovers, finding a perfect scrap match, for stitching in the counter top deck for the new faucet area behind the sink. do you *have* to do the backsplash if you're doing corian?

It's actually built up and routed. I did not want any hard corners in my bathrooms. I don't believe the coving was $40-50 per foot upgrade because a couple of my shelves weren't much more expensive than that, total. I will try to look back and see.

Hi! I just did a kitchen remodel and kept the piece of Meganite (copycat Corian-type surface) from my stove cutout. The guy who did my counters said it's "easy" to cut, he uses a jigsaw with a new, sharp blade. Meganite is softer than corian.... I haven't tried to cut it yet, getting up the courage. Have you cut any of your Corian yet? Was it easy to work with? I want to cut a "halibut" shape out of my stuff, to add to a mosaic backsplash I'm making for the new kitchen and a top for an old plant stand base..... Another idea... use your corian to make a kitchen island top. Have fun! whifflewhim (newbie to forum)

My mom had a piece cut from the leftovers of her countertop, she keeps it under her Kitchen-Aid mixer.

She has a bigger model that's kept out in the pantry, and it makes it easier to carry it back and forth to the kitchen when she needs it.

We cut a piece ourselves to use a cutting board on our boat.

Hello,

My husband just finished making our own Solid surface countertop. Some ideas for the scraps:

cutting boards
pen blanks (for wood turners)

If you have any of the adhesive left you can do many things...picture frames etc.

According to my husband, the material is very easy to work with. Re: the post above about making kids blocks....you could but you would want to sand the sharp edges!

Ooooh, he could make game boards, do-it-yourself kitchen island tops (to use instead of butcher block or granite - for do-it-yourselfers), shelves with a routered edge and plate groove, cake plate (add some little bun feet or small metal cabinet hardware feet), plate rack (spaced grooves and legs), tv tray, clock. I could have a lot of fun with that material!

I had a small table and the top was bad so we cut the corian to fit the top of this small table. Looks good

Cover old table tops or even dresser tops.
I'd think it would make a great base for a plant stand that was on wheels for large potted plants.

I have the cut out from where the sink was put in. I use mine outside when we entertain. There never seems to be a good solid surface for cutting up fruits, veggies, etc. on outdoor furniture and its nice to have close to the grill too.

The original post is old, but for future reference, I've seen Corian cutting boards in the shape of the states for sale at flea markets and craft fairs. People seem to love em and it's a great use for the scraps.
