3' tall ceramic urn from curb side....

Someone tried to paint it a bright blue and the paint is peeling. I don't think it will be hard to remove the rest. The original finish is a shiny white and pink and baby blue and not at all appealing to me. I would love some creative ideas about what to do with this find. My husband is looking seriously askance at my latest acquisition. Thanks. Wobur

If you could get most of the paint off, you could decoupodge it. There are some really fun papers in the scrapbook store.

If you can figured out how to get the paint off and refinish it, you could turn it upside down, put a large flowerpot saucer on it (maybe mosaic it) and have a great birdbath! Let us know! It's a great find!

I have to say my first thought was ferns too, and depending on how closely you look at them and whether you have snow cover in winter, you might even choose some of the deciduous varieties which are stunning up close (OK, I like ferns). As for shrubs, if you want to treat this plant like boxwood then you might as well use boxwood. There are over 200 varieties and some grow very slowly so I'm sure you can find something that will be OK in the pots for at least 5 years - but then anything will need repotting for soil replenishment anyway around that time. You may have to go to a specialty supplier, probably on-line. If you can dispense with round and want a small and interesting evergreen shrub, I might suggest a holly that has more interesting leaves and structure - I love Ilex (I think it's crenata) 'Mariesii' or there's an even smaller one or two called, I think, 'Green Pagoda' and I can't remember the other - I could check later. They have neat shapes and grow slowly. But from a distance they might just look blobby, and then you might as well have your globe. To some extent the choice depends on from where you will view these planters. If only from a distance, then shape is your issue and leaves don't matter. Or maybe your look is starkly formal, which I have to admit I really admire in many settings. I'd just never have the self-discipline to forego the more interesting plants, but the truth is that the more interesting the plants, the more informal the look. There are some tiny yews if you go to specialized suppliers, but I'm not sure they lend themselves to pruning. A plant you want to shear, as I say, might as well have no intrinsic personality as all its personality will be pruned into it and will come from its role in the overall design. Kind of like a chorus girl vs. a prima ballerina, and a show made up of prima ballerinas would be a bit of a mess! Short answer: find a slow-growing boxwood, and do your pruning thing! KarinL

Hi Triciae, Those sound like nice pops of color and interest you have. Very creative. Have you gotten anything from...is it Ventucci in Mystic? I think I remember that they have some great big pots and urns with some great color. They opened another store in Westbrook and have some great stuff. I'm handicapped also...bad lungs...and have switched to mostly container gardening. I do have a very ambitious project all worked out in my head for a new garden in Brewster, but that's another story. Containers are a great way for us to keep our hands dirty. It also brings our gardens up close where we can see them. It sounds like you really enjoy what you are doing. sooey

If the windows with the view are a bedroom and bathroom, does that bathroom have another exterior wall in which you might add a window so any escaping sounds and smells from the bathroom do not open onto the deck? Have you considered sliding glass doors in the bedroom and/or (if the floor plan enables it) changing around the purposes of the rooms so the bedroom by the deck becomes a more used room .... such as could a dining room become a bedroom and the bedroom become a dining room? and/or build another bedroom and bath upstairs above the bedroom and bath on the main floor so the deck side bedroom might become a bonus room/den? Adding a downstairs entry facing the "front" (photographer) could be a good idea, depending upon the layout of the home. However, if the current main entry is beneath the deck, you might consider turning the garage into a sun room or screened porch that wraps around to become the entry unless you actually need/want another opening facing "front" (photographer). Do at least first consider what that would do to the interior of the room in which you're adding the entry. Does the room lend itself to that change? What side of the house is north/south/east/west -- will that impact your decision?

Your home is not as ugly as you seem to think it is -- just as a rustic cabin vibe. Would seriously consider a pair of more traditional bay window rather than the garden window. You'd be able to open the side windows of each bay window and yet still have the options to add plants in the windows. What rooms are above these windows? \ Would building codes/restrictions permit you to create a drive thru carport atop that asphalt driveway the full width of the two story part of the house enabling you to create a sunroom with for your plants above that using skylights in the "attic" for the new room off your ?bedroom? I found a great wide vase at a yard sale..I went to a stained glass store & bought scrap pieces of pretty colors in aquas/blues, sage, etc.- then broke them up & used GOOP and did a mosaic over the entire piece. I bought the tinted grout in a sage to grout it with-turned out really pretty.
You could also go outside the box and shingle the piece with pine cones or clam shells.
If you like florals..I just saw the prettiest Spring floral printed napkins-decoupaged on the piece would love great!
Really cool would be to paint it a pretty pastel or bold color, then spray an adhesive all over it & roll it thru those teenie tiny clear beads (they have no holes in them). The color of the piece would sparkle with the base color showing through!

Sounds like a great find, hope you'll share a pic with us. I've been using "Citris-Strip" to remove paint from items. It's a gel paint remover and it worked really nice on an old wooden table I have. I bought it at Home Depot for just under $10 (the smaller container). As with most paint strippers, you spread it on and leave it on for half hour or more. The paint easily came off and the "citris" wasn't that awful smell as with other removers.

Thanks everyone! All great ideas! I need to find more urns on the curb.... I have been working on getting the paint off, which is pretty easy, but now I am finding a few spots where the original finish is peeling, too. There is a kind of white chalky plaster underneath. I am a little afraid to decopage it or something and have it flake off. Any thoughts? I wonder if there is a way to seal it?

Lots of ways to seal it - primer, varnish, spray sealer, etc. Sounds like it was meant for indoor use but it was exposed to the weather? Maybe if it is kept indoors, it will not continue to flake.

If you have to keep it inside you could use it to hold rolled up towels in the bath,or umbrellas, or just about anything. I really like the birdbath idea.

I do need for it to be outside. I have a large deck but a small house. I think you are right, scarlett2001, it was meant to be kept indoors and it was exposed to the weather. Maybe I will try an outdoor primer and paint and then if it holds do something more creative over that. Hmmm...I could move it under an overhang in the winter. If I get it figured out and can then figure out posting pics, I will. Nice of you all to give me such great suggestions. Thanks! Wobur
