Trash To Treasure

glass coffee carafes

My coffeemaker broke, and I have 2 carafes for it. The plastic tops of the carafes are stained, and one top is broken. Something is making me hesitate to put carafes in the recycling bin this morning. (Nobody claimed them on freecycle) Is there a use for these?

They're marked off in cup increments. Before you use them for measuring in the house or in the garden, use a standard measuring cup to see if they're marked in 8 oz. cups or 6 oz. (coffee) cups.

hi ,
I have a bunch of them also duh never thought of using them for measuring I am going to plant hen and chicks in one for inside the house also have used them for potting soil scoops
on the potting bench. Rick

Dump a bit of baking soda in the carafe, and add a dish cloth, fill 3/4 full with hot water(not boiling). Put on the lid and shake. I clean my coffee carafe, my coffee pot, my tea pot, and any thermoses this way. Dump out the water. The cloth will be right there so remove it and rinse well

Actually, I already have tile and I don't have a problem with it. I'm not crazy about what I have, so I'm thinking about replacing it with something more updated. mtnrdredux - For a long time I felt like I would get travertine when I got around to replacing my floors. When it came down to it, I decided I didn't want to deal with sealing it. chispa - I don't think I've ever seen that brand. Annie - I love the look of your floors. It reminds me of the smooth travertine floors as opposed to the rustic type. I've been looking for something with a calm pattern similar to dedtired's floors, but yet enough pattern and color to hide dirt. I found one I like, but I'm thinking it may look more busy than what I initially thought I wanted. The variation is a 4, which is the highest number. Looking at one tile, it's not overly busy, but who knows once the whole floor is laid. I really like the darker color, but I think the lighter color looks better with my countertop.

@Karen Eagle - I too will follow up on my post above from last year - my Oxo Barista Brain is still providing delicious hot coffee, and at the right temperature, and the stainless steel carafe keeps it hot for a while (not sure how long its maximum is because we finish the pot of coffee within about 40 minutes). I do rinse the carafe with very hot water just prior to brewing in order to warm the metal up before the coffee hits it. As mentioned, I had decided against the Technivorm when shopping for coffee makers due to its large footprint yet small carafe, and how expensive it is - i.e. for different reasons than you mentioned. So now the list of reasons to not get the Technivorm is longer. My friend just bought the Oxo recently - it has been slightly redesigned. My friend says the coffee is great, but to get the very last cup from the carafe she has to take the lid off - somehow the lid prevents the last amount of the coffee in the carafe from pouring out. It’s a bit of an annoyance but not a really big deal.

I don't think you can recycle that type of glass...at least we can't do that here in Oregon. Something about it being tempered.

Haha...you could use them as gold fish bowls!

Most carafes are made of borosylicate glass, which is a very different composition from other glass, so can't be mixed with it. And not enough of borosylicate gets tossed to make it worthwhile to collect for recycling. Some torchworkers (people who use high-temp torches to create decorative glasswork) might be able to use it, though, if they are into using recycled glass.

Hmmm, gold fish bowls. I use one I picked up to water my large plants. I like the idea of using one as a planting soil scoop too. Going to have to scavenge another!
