Styrofoam Boxes - What to do?????

Hi all,

I'm in San Diego and last Christmas, we had a lot of stuff catered (due to illness in the family, we let Stonewall Kitchen, etc. do a lot of our stuff to handle the oodles of houseguests) and I am now left with 11 beautifully crafted styrofoam boxes that things arrived in (with dry ice etc.). The lids and boxes are a thing of beauty..... I can't find a use for them and San Diego seems to have no way to recycle styrofoam, so I'm trying to find someone who might need some lovely boxes -- their fit and construction is gorgeous and I'm sure it'd keep anything cool/preserved etc.

Does anyone have any ideas about who might be able to reuse these???? They have been sitting in my garage for 3 mos while I try to figure out what responsible thing to do with them.

I'm so upset about not being able to recycle them down here, I'm considering mailing the dang things up to my former neighbor in the Bay Area so she can take them to the recycling center (since there are 4 up there......) AGGHH Help!

Just cruising the forum this morning - I hang out on the Stained Glass/Mosaic site, but can't resist suggesting you use them for mosaics. One of our members wraps styrofoam in duct tape then mosaics them. Your boxes could become wonderful planters. Since I have mosaics on the brain, all I can think about is mosaicing them into garden - or inside things such as tables, stools whatever, or shadow boxes etc.

Hello, Tuesdayschild. I wanted to know if you thought these boxes could be used to ship live fish? I am not having luck w/ what I am using w/ the USPS and I am looking for an alternative.

Well, they are supposed to send replacements next month. The quality of what the plants would have been, if they had been alive, weren't that great, either, Just tiny pieces. I spent almost $9, and their box cost $5. I mean, I probably would have been better off just buying one plant at the nursery, but I love getting trades! It's like Christmas. I can't imagine that they sent them bone dry. They had to have been dug before. I mean, it's been hotter here than where the trader's at, and less humidity here, so the ones I mailed would have been in worse shape, I would think. I did explain about proper packing, maybe it was just not understanding how to do it, but I wish they would have asked! I'm hoping that Christmas will come early in September, but we'll see. I'm done with plant trades for the year, though! Unless, they really know how to pack! If you pack correctly, plants will be perfectly fine in triple digits, as long as they're shipped Priority and not left out waiting on you. I don't consider the weather a good excuse. Now, too hot or rainy to dig, of course, but not to ship. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've never had any problems with it. Thanks for the moral support! It's great to have a place to vent about lost plants and bad trades where people understand, and don't look at you like you've got 3 heads! Or, if they do, at least you can't see them! LOL! HW

Many potting soil mixes on the market today contain as much or more organic material as inorganic material. For example, potting soil can be made of shredded wood, bark, and/or peat moss with minimal amounts of what we call real soil (dirt). Styrofoam pellets, perlite and vermiculite are some of the other items that are often added to the soil mixture for aeration and water retention. In addition, many mixtures also include different types of fertilizers. Some fertilizers are oxidizers, which will make a fire that does start, grow at an even faster rate. Potting soil mixtures are shipped moist and in plastic bags from the manufacturer. Most people use the soil in their planters in the Spring, then they forget about them once Fall/Winter arrives. Bacterial decomposition occurs within the mix that creates heat. This is the same principle that makes compost piles or bales of hay heat up. Although this principle, which is called spontaneous combustion, is usually found more often in climates containing more moisture; because water acts as a catalyst, these types of fires can also occur here. But I think Violet is correct "It takes over 500 years for styrofoam to break down so in the big picture, I wouldn't worry about it. You're simply adding aeration to your soil. You're not dumping the contents of a beanbags and you're using common sense. It will do more good in your garden then it will in a landfill."

There are commercial processes for reprocessing polystyrene, but a lot of it is thrown away by consumers because they don't have easy access to them. Most domestic recycling schemes don't collect it because it comprises a very small quantity of our individual waste, and potentially it is of very low value as well. Although called polystyrene recycling, it is not a material that is ideal for recycling as it suffers significant degradation when reprocessed. It's mostly used in rather small quantities as a ground up filler in new expanded polystyrene, it reduces the end product's properties significantly and because it is limited to only a small amount of the product's mass, even with maximum recycling, something far from achieved, the polystyrene industry would still require vast quantities of new materials and generate lots of post-consumer waste. How do I drill hole in Styrofoam

I used to make holes with an old tin can. See if you can find an old tin can with th right diameter and then just push the open end down on the styrofoam and twist the can around. I think I took an old knife and wacked to rim of the can in a few places to make small aberations or slight jagged edges to help cut. I have some pictures I took while makeing some holes for some cups to fit in. Anyway, take a look and see if it might work for you Here is a link that might be useful: construction ideas

I have a few styrofoam boxes which I am saving in case I need to ship a very fragile item for eBay, but I wouldn't consider them beautiful. :-) Are yours carved or shaped differently? If so maybe you could paint them with a metallic type paint? They'd look like metal then, although I still don't have any ideas of what to use them for (except maybe planters?).

Can they be used again for transporting food or drink by the catering company? Maybe you could return them to Stonewall Kitchen?

I was thinking mosaics too! They could be coated in mortor
or plaster and used for mosaics. Can you post a pic of them?

check out the hypertufa forum. You can use them for forms for planters and such. Or maybe someone there would pick them up from you and use for that purpose.

Also they make nice boxes for the back of your vehicle when you go to the store and get frozen or cold food.
