Help me give dresser new life!

I purchased this dresser at a garage sale for $15. Its solid wood but the color is horrid!

any ideas on a good color for it?

What colors do you have in the room? Is this the room you intend to keep it in and is the room decorated the way you want it? Is there a color you like more than others?

Really you could go with any color of the rainbow. Often people choose white though and another good color for wood furniture is black!

I'd go with black and sand down the edges, but I decorate in country prim. What is your decorating style? ~Anj

The more bumps, roof lines etc the more expensive. The cheapest to build is a box, so the closer to a box your footprint is the cheapest, therefore I would say the farmhouse would be more to build. I noticed the laundry was upstairs in the farmhouse also, will this be a home you live in when you are older? If so you may want main floor laundry. I do like that the dining room is part of the kitchen, never had any use for a seperate formal dining room myself. In #56 the master bath seems odd for some reason, and a long way to walk to get a quick change of clothes, I would probably put a sliding door to one of the closets from the bedroom. Laundry does seem ackward here because its not a straight shot or even semi straight from your bedroom to it, where all your clothes and towels will originate. I love the front porch and overall look of the house though. The William one has some good things, the sun/kitchen nook is large enough to be a dining area on its own, allowing you to re-purpose the official dining area and use it as a library/den, etc. You could even make the kitchen larger: taking away space from that dining room, and use the smaller new room as a office/workout room etc If you added 4 extra feet to the bottom of the kitchen, the remaining "dining" room would still be more than large enough for office/workout space. That is still larger than bedrooms I have seen in smaller houses! It has lots of storage and a great porch. And everything you need as you get older is all located on the main floor. You don't mention kids so I haven't really taken them into consideration much, but he farmhouse does have a nice activity/playroom on the 2nd floor, and the William one has the bedrooms spaced a little apart which could potentially avoid some sibliling conflicts, plus that huge future room as they get older and want friends over or a media room. For me I would narrow it further to the farmouse or William. And probably lean more toward the william one because its squareish, seems to have more useable space, and potential with just a few changes.

That sounds heavenly, Melissa! I can picture it all through your sensitive and vivid descriptions. I, too, find that Alfred de Dalmas takes awhile to grow into his charming potential, but when he does, each year just gets better. I'm curious to hear future reports on your Aennchen von Tharau. What is its origin? If your AvT turns out to be R Alba Maxima, wonder if every AvT is R Alba Maxima. I grow Maxima and have considered tracking down AvT for either my garden or a friend's. I actually like the color of the walnut. Perhaps doing the inset w/a tufted velvet would bring some life into it. you could also try a diff color on the wall? right now everything is very neutral, which is fine, but you will need to bring in some textures or prints if you want some 'life'. If you notice in your inspo pic, all the diff textures, the art work, the pendant lights, floating nightstands, etc. yours is bordering on a hotel look. So, if you're sentimental about the set, then you'll have to figure out some other elements to offset it's generic headboard look. Putting in a rustic wall w/that furniture, as is, won't work. Painting the wall another color and putting in a white velvet or linen inset might work though.

If you can change both fan and dining light, then I would have them complement. No recessed lights in the living room? If you must have the fan, then something that hugs the ceiling with a flush mount light too but have primary lighting with an arched lamp and other lamps. Something with silver metal for dining light would complement the kitchen stainless steel/chrome. The type of lighting depends on your style. Same for window fabrics and coloring. You have a neutral background everywhere- what are your favorite colors? Is there a rug in LR with color?

I think it depends on the other colors in the room also. I'm partial to a soft white myself. I'd definatly find some new knobs. Depending again on what look you're trying to achieve - there are some wonderful figural ones, ones that looks like sticks or leaves or my favorite - the clear crystal vintage reproductions - perfect with white!

I'm also seeing black, maybe with the edges sanded down in a soft distressed look. Its got great lines, very classis. You could go with a brushed nickel knob or some mis matched old white porcelian door knobs as oversized drawer pulls. I saw this look on a recyled desk and it was cool, kinda funky and contemporary.

If you're going to use it in that room, why not pick up the blue in the quilt and some shabby chic white knobs. I got a bunch at a GS once, they were white ceramic with pink roses...I think they sell them at Home Depot or Lowes.

With all the flat surfaces, this bureau would be a really good candidate to do some decoupage on. Here area couple ideas.

I did something similar on my son's dresser. I painted the bureau silver and then did a black crackle over the top. The drawers I decoupaged with a black and silver wrapping paper. It came out awesome!

Ivory, tan, or gold with a raw umber glaze. Wood appliques stencils, or Tatouage(transfers/hsn.com) to give it a more unique look. Change out the hardware, maybe handles instead of knobs to take up more of the empty space. ;o)

From looking at the arrangement on top...I'd say..tune in to your inner feelings .. Might I suggest behr's interior semi gloss enamel "Scotland Ise". Lightly sand..then prime in a light coloured latex..then 2 coats of the above..
