I think you are misunderstanding the concept of thermal mass as it relates to home heating. Just plopping something big in the living room isn't going to do much. What you need is a large mass and a way to passively heat that mass with energy that wouldn't normally be in the room. You don't gain any energy just by using your existing heat to warm up a big tank of water.

CEFreeman: I know that is a common mistake- I'ld like to think that most folks are now aware that above the fridge is the last place you should put your wine. But then again, what about olive oil next to the stove? That's the most convenient place to keep it, and where most folks store it, but exposing it to the heat is also bad for the olive oil. I am keeping my design the way it is, although we tweaked the cabinet so the bottom doors line up with the glass doors above. I've decided that the "crate" wine storage is fine for us- and I like the way it breaks up the cabinetry. No wine drawers available through Medallion, but I'm fine with it.

Like you, Eileen, I've never been a fan of box wines. I've never heard of Black Box but I don't really peruse the box wine section so they might be available here, who knows. HOWEVER, that is not to say that I don't buy "cheap" wines. By cheap, I don't mean MadDog 2020 or Boone's Farm. By cheap, I mean under $10. I find that there are a LOT of wines under $10, some even as low as $4.99, that are quite nice. These are bottled wines with corks. I don't know if it's a local thing or a Texas thing, but I'm talking French, Italian, Argentinian, Chilian, Australian, Spanish wines, all under $10, and easily acquired. I usually average about one out of maybe 15-20 bottles that I buy that I don't care for, and I use them for cooking. Yes, I know, I know, don't use a wine for cooking if you don't like it to drink. Absurd. I do it all the time and it works great. My best all time good deal on wine was at my local HEB (grocery store). Stopped in to pick up a few items on my way home from work and happened to glance over at the wine section. There were several bottles of Black Swan Chardonnay on sale for $2.99. I bought one, figured I'd cook with it (!) if I didn't like it, and drank some that night. Delightful! Went back the next day and bought up all the rest. Got a 10% discount for buying more than six (I think I ended up with 10 bottles) so they came out to $2.69 a bottle. Wheeeee!!! Anyway, I guess my point is, "cheap" doesn't necessarily mean "bad" as it did years ago when it comes to wine. It's definitely worth a try! Let us know what you think.
