wow, wonder what kind of animal skin it was made of?

It is very thick...may be just cattle hide. They had to get it really wet and then pound it into a mold to get the face and then fold the rest and curl the hair. There are 3 tiny holes in the top in the hairline and I thought I would put in some wire or leather and string beads on it...maybe in brown tones.

We have an Indian room so I thought I would put it in there. I have a few African pieces there.

I've seen similar masks sold at the "Sugarloaf" Craft shows on the east coast. I don't remember the hair being like that, though. It should go great in your Indian/African room. Since you are posting on the trash to treasure forum, I am curious if you got it at a yard sale. The masks we have seen at craft shows are expensive, so I think you should be congratulated!

I have seen those at the different art shows in my area as well. They sell for a huge price. I have also seen an artist that was featured on one of the shows on HGTV. They showed how she made them. It was a really interesting clip. I wish I could find it. But she soaked the leather in water for several hours and then just molded it with her hands over a mask mold that she had created prior to the work. She would actually make a mold from your face or someone else that you wanted it done of.
