Ever see a Zebra horse?

Shopped this from the curb. It was originally on a frame, suspended from springs, a child's jumphorse. Dismantled it, patched up the holes, and painted it to resemble a whimsical zebra/horse.

This may be your year, Miss Sherry. I will probably have quite a few this year since I'm seeing them now. The problem I have is that I see very few ZLW cats. I have vines all over the place and I look for them and I've only found a few in all the years I've been gardening. If I could find a bunch I would be tempted to drive them up to you in Mississippi, Miss Sherry. Went for a walk in the park today and saw three large Zebra Swallowtails. They were flying around a paw paw patch. Talked to the ranger and he said that there are also bunches of Zebra Longwings in different places in the park. Lots of Palamedes in the park also. I only see a few in my yard. Yes, Mary, I remember when you had so many black swallowtail cats that you couldn't feed them and you sent me a bunch via one-day mail. I had some last year, but they tend to come in the spring and then I see very few later on. Saw a gorgeous sulphur today in my yard. It was yellow mostly but had a brilliant orange near its body. It was very large. I really cannot differentiate amongst the sulphurs. Sorry about the hummers, Mary. It's difficult to figure out why they vary so much from year to year. I have had them almost year round now for the last two years. This year I had a Rufous that stayed for about three months. The juvi male that stayed with me all winter seems to have left. I now see just one adult male that came with the migration. I should be seeing more soon. My coral bean tree is in full bloom as are my shrimp bushes and my coral honeysuckle. In fact lots of things are blooming. If we get normal rain and don't get a hurricane this is going to be the best year I have ever had for butterflies and possibly for hummers. It's nice to have place like this to share the joy. Tom

From what I hear, people in South Florida are having them. I was given a few eggs to raise and did release 5 healthy butterflies but they immediately left even though I do have several types of passionvines that they like. On the other hand... my Pipevine is gone! The Polydamas have totally decimated my vine. I must have hundreds of cats, many big ones all searching for food and a place to pupate. The poor small ones are out of luck. And this is from a huge amount of fresh tender vine that came back after the hard winter. The same thing is true for the Eastern Blacks. They were late arriving but ate all my parsley, dill, fennel and even now my Rue is gone. Must have about 20 in chrysalis and there are more on the Rue that will not have enough to eat. I even sent some to Tom in Clermont. Thanks, Tom. Monarchs seem to be more numerous this year than in the past few years. They are on their own. I do have milkweed left - at least right now. Have raised a dozen or so Spicebush but haven't found any eggs recently. Still have some in chrysalis though. Same is true for Giants - a number in chrysalis stage now. Sulphur cats on the Candlestick now but the birds - Cardinals and Parulas are picking them off. I am afraid the Polys will meet the same fate - they are so out in the open now with no vine left. Gulf Frits were big in numbers a few weeks ago. Seeing fewer cats now - but butterflies are still here. Saw a beautiful male Pipevine this morning. Mommas are out of luck since they won't have vine. Only seen one Peacock all season and one Buckeye. A friend though has had numerous Buckeyes on some of her snapdragons.

Green Zebra, wilting branches

If only the Green Zebras are wilting and all other plants are not, under the same conditions, and if the other person who bought the same plants from the same nursery and is having the same problems, then that suggests to me the possibility that the seeds used for GZ were contaminated with a seedborne disease. There are all sorts of weather related situations that can cause wilting, but you've clearly said that all other plants are OK. Foliage diseases do not cause wilting, but systemic diseases can cause wilting. So can pathogenic nematode infections but this is a new bed and nematodes are not seedborne. And if it is a systemic disease infection, such as Fusarium for instance, if it were me I'd pull out those two plants ASAP so that there's minimal contamination of the soil in that bed. I admit that I didn't look at the pictures or what you posted elsewhere b'c of your saying that the wilt was only with GZ and that another person with GZ from the same nursery was having the same wilt problem. Wildebeests and various types of antelopes too. It's been an extremely varied bunch this morning! Does anyone know of a really good site with photographs of African animals to help ID those that I don't recognize? The different antelope/deer type animals are some I particularly have trouble with.

I was at the zoo a couple of weeks ago and just adored the zebras. What a treat it would be to have something like this in my home! What a great job you did!

I have always thought of doing something in a zebra or tiger print but didn't think I could duplicate the stripes very well. You did a wonderful job with the zebra stripes! It looks awesome!

I love it!! I found a jump horse not long ago and just gave it away....kicking myself now! Your paint job makes it look like one of those very expensive carrousel animals. I'll be looking for another one now!

That is just beautiful!!! I always LOVED carousel horses and wondered if one of those bouncy horses could be painted to look as good. You did a fantastic job!

I definitely want to try one now, so I posted to freecycle to see if I could get one. The bouncy horse I bought for my niece was tossed out awhile ago. :(

What did you use for patching the holes, etc.? and for primer, paint, etc.? I'm wondering if I could use water-based acrylic paints (like from a craft store) and then maybe give it an overcoat of clear acrylic to protect it?

Hi,
To patch the holes, I put a bit of GESilicone II around the inside of the hole, and then inserted a piece of cardboard with a thread to hold the cardboard up against the inside of the hole so when I smoothed on Poly Instafill it didn't fall into the hole. I let that dry, then primed the whole horse with cheap flat spray paint from WallyWorld and painted the horse with craft acrylic paints. Then after it was all dry I once again, probably because I'm cheap, spray painted with a cheap clear coat (that wouldn't yellow) to protect it.

Here's another horse I'm working on.....decopaged with wallpaper cutouts. Ever see a SunFlower Horse??? LOL

Thank you for all the info!!! I followed everything from the WallyWorld on. lol! The GESilicone and PolyInstafill are foreign to me... would I find those things at a craft store or hardware store?

Hoping you can see this little drawing for patching the hole up. The thread is threaded through a piece of cardboard, or piece of plastic cut from a plastic bottle, and then it is pulled up snug and will be glued to the inside of the hole. The Polyfil will then fill in and smooth out where the hole indent is, and you will be left with 2 threads sticking out from the Polyfil and when the Polyfil dries they can be cut off.

The GE Silicone and Polyfil can be bought at WallyWorld.

Sheesh, I feel so inept when it comes to describing this. Hope you can follow me. :)

Linda I just love what you have done with your horses. I have two (one large, one smaller) in the basement just waiting for a paint job. Great idea to use wallpaper cutouts, really like that one! I'm wanting to do mine and put them in the garden - great ideas! Mona

You zebra horse is great, but I absolutely love your sunflower horse. I picked up a horse a couple of years ago and still haven't done anything with it. Maybe you will be my inspiration.

I love your horses!! I have one - my girls and I named her Bessie - that has sat out in my flower bed for a couple years, patiently waiting for inspiration to strike me. And now I think, thanks to your horse, it has bashed me in between the eyes!!! I do have some jewelry I've gotten at the Goodwill, that I know she needs to wear, a gorgeous triple strand of pearls that has to be some type of bridle and some funky, huge clip earrings, etc. I'm so excited now! I need to decide what to put on her body, but now I have a direction to go - thank you, thank you!!!

Thank you so much for your painting directions. I have been wanting to try this project for several months, but have been concerned about proceeding through the proper steps.
I know I've seen directions on mounting the horse on a pole, but can't seem to find them on this site or through google.

I just saw your horses last night and they were SO beautiful. I really want to paint one up, but it's been a very long time since I saw one of those bouncy horses at a garage sale, so figured I'd NEVER find one!

THEN, this morning, I stopped by a garage sale and bought one for just THREE DOLLARS! I'm so excited to work on one! Thank you so much for sharing your pics and inspiring me!
