'Aging' wood?

alison

Is there a way to quickly "weather" wood, so it has that nice grey, slightly roughened look? I want to make a mirror with some beautiful white oyster shells fanned out on an arch at the top. I've figured out the template for the curved wood frame -- but I don't want to wait a year while I leave it out in the yard to weather! (Not to mention risking it bowing or beckling from actual weather.)

Any suggestions? I thought I might cut it out of simple pine, then run a stiff wire brush along the grain to roughen it and raise the grain -- but how to get that true grey -out-in-the-elements-forever kinda look?

Appreciate any advice!
