Satellite Bird Bath

We had an old satellite dish that was going in the garbage, that is before I got my hands on it. Did a bit of mosaics and turned it into a bird bath. Supposed to be a goldfish swimming in water.

If you wanted to try using it for hot water, I'm sure you could point it south, run some coil tubing in it's center for your domestic hot water to detour through, much like I did with my compost water heater system. Lining the dish with aluminum foil or black paint would probably get it pretty hot and would get most benefit when using hot water with the sun out and winterizing for freezing weather.

A standing birdbath on the patio has gotten only limited use for several years. Also far from the house and a pain to keep clean. This year I bought one of those deck-railing birdbaths. It's only steps from the kitchen so easy to keep clean in hot weather, and it's being used for both drinking and baths. The red-headed sparrows that drink from the ant cups unfortunately still use the ant cups as well as the birdbath. Well who wouldn't like to have two sources of water? :) I thought a brick too high so used a small flagstone type stone and a couple of 3-4 inch river rocks in the middle. However, they drink from the edge.

Have the bird bath have its own dedicated line not connected to other pots or have an air gap with the emitter always above the surface of the water on a mini tripod maybe. JMHO

I had to raise my well according to NC regulations and it is in the driveway!!! I have cleared out a brushy area beside my existing driveway to expand and plan to make the area around the well head a landscaped "turn around" that I will encircle with pavers and plant a few boxwoods in. I have been on a mad search for something I can put over the well head and I want to thank Olychick for these fantastic pics of homemade bird baths. I am now excited to pick up a few big flower pots and a bird bath basin!

In the picture the dish is sitting on an outdoor garbage bin that was bought as it matches the blue in the design, but I also kept the original pipe mounting stem that was originally on the dish, so if I want to, can use that also.

Very cool!

My father made a dish for his birds, but I
don't think he's willing to mosaic it.

I used GE Silicone II to glue down the broken china, and used sanded grout for the grouting.

Beautiful!! Sigh* I just sent 2 dishes to GW right before Christmas......maybe I'll find another!
