Greetings to you all! Question for you..

I was told I could find help here. I have a china cup I am wanting to cut in half. I want to glue the half cup to a saucer so I can hang it. Also if I drill a hole in it to hang what size drill bit should I use? Can I use my reg drill or should I get on made for china? Didn't know if my Sears brand was too high powered.

Wow! I would think that almost any kind of drill would make a lot of china pieces instead of cutting it in half. Could you call a glass shop and see what they would suggest?

I'm thinking that I've heard people mention using a drill bit that is made especially for ceramic/glass pieces. How about calling Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. and see what they can tell you. I'm NOT knowledgeable at all in tools or how to use them. Wish I was.....

How old do you have to be to be an "oldtimer"? Yes, I still lurk on occassion and remember RLV well and miss your posts. I am still growing the beautiful Love's Promise you sent me some time ago. I still have the same old Kodak digital camera I got because you used to post such beautiful rose pictures with yours. Glad to hear all is well with you. Hope you are still writing. Hello to everyone else on the forum. It might be interesting if people posted pics of their garden then and now for comparison. I know in my case the trees are a lot larger, the deer population is much greater and we have been in a no watering drought for ever. Still, I have managed to keep things alive and this time of year the roses are tall enough that the deer can't reach the blooms. For those who remember my Betty Priors from Wayside, they were virused and finally declined to the point that they were replaced by KOs last year.

Kendal, welcome. I too am planning on adding bees this year. I hope to do comb honey, regular honey and pollen. Jones' in SLC is a good place to start. I have been flower farming for the past 15 years or so. I do several farmers markets and sell wholesale. I also am starting a CSA this year. Steve, I too hope this site gets busy again. My cuttings of the two old roses I've "found" in my neighborhood are looking really good, so I thought I'd share a photo. On the right is the one about which I started this thread, photos up top, and which some of you have identified as "Dr. Peck's 12th Avenue Smoothie" aka Charles Lawson, in commerce. At left is another rose I posted about here a year or two ago, and which Gregg Lowery thought was likely "California Malton." Though I don't have room for these roses . . . I'm so excited to have successful baby plants of them. Left: Likely "California Malton" Right: Likely "Dr. Peck's 12th Avenue Smoothie" The tiny twig in the back is another bit of "Dr. Peck's Smoothing" and seems to be rooted and sending out some foliage. Below is the mother plant of my likely "California Malton." It's rare (for me, anyway) to spot old roses in San Francisco, aside from Mlle. Cecile Brunner; so I'm excited to have two such interesting and beautiful roses nearby, and to have managed to propagate them, too. Thanks again to all for your help and interest! Sheba

If you have a WalMart nearby (and who doesn't!) they sell Black and Decker Glass and Tile bits in a 4 pack for around $10. These are the best bits to use. HD sells them for around $17, and I get them to price match plus 10%, so I get them for $9! woohoo.

Anyway, use the next to the smallest bit (can't recall the size). If your cup is really china, it will take ages to drill a hole. Use drops of water to cool the bit and go S-L-O-O-O-W. If it's just ceramic it should drill fast. I'd suggest using one of the bigger bits on another piece until you get the hang of drilling, to save your bit for the one you're going to do.

I'm not sure about cutting the cup. Maybe if you have a glass shop they could do it? I've seen it done with glass on a band saw type of set up, but never china, and never a tea cup. I HAVE seen tea cups that were cut in half and made into night lights, just don't have a clue as to how they did it!
