Thanks for responding! Yes, we will have a top loader. I am thinking that framing up a small closet under the stairs will be the way to go for the vacuum and brooms, etc. The space to the left of it can be lower shelves with one set of drawers and space for hampers. To the left of the dryer, i think we can do some open shelves, or stash a drying rack or something. We can do a hanging rack on the left side of the room, maybe a single upper shelf over the washer/dryer/sink side. I am not sure what the simplest thing will be for the door for the closet under the stairs. It will be just shy of 60" tall. Can we just cut down a regular door? I am sure our contractor can help with that question. Good point on offsetting the ironing board- I would not have thought of that. Thanks for the input!

Wow. What are you asking for help with, exactly, since you say the "floor plan is set"? Do you mean the dimensions are set, but you can move walls? Do you mean you can't move walls, only cabinets? Or, are you asking how to put all that stuff in without moving appliances or walls? Also, where are these cubbies you mention? I don't see them in the picture. 5'4" is too narrow a "leg" of the room for front loading washer and dryer of normal size. By the time the washer and dryer are in, they will be at least 2.5' from the wall, leaving you less than 3' of "hall space" for your basket and to bend down to get items out of the machines. Unless you are very petite (in both stature and girth/trunk), it will be cramped to do that in the current set up (your behind will likely hit the wall behind you as you bend down). I'd consider turning the washer/dryer so they are at the end of the leg, facing the room, rather than on the long side, facing the wall. If possible though, I'd completely change your half bath and the whole mudroom/half bath layout. Is it possible to change from a square half bath to a long one?

IF YOU HAD WANTED TO STAY WITH WOODEN SHELVES, WITH SIDES, ETC: • Build a box w/ shelves (basically a bookcase or a frameless kitchen cabinet; you could use a kitchen cabinet, actually--just don't put the door on). Put reinforcing supports/cleats across the back of the box at top and bottom; these will hold it sturdy plus give you something to use to attach it the to wall. • Mount it to the wall with toggle bolts or molly bolts, or with a cleat system. (The cleat is a horizontal board that's fastened to the studs, and then you can rest the matching cleat/support on top of it.
