A trashy Christmas present

I got this adorable dangle thing from my sister for Christmas (she didn't make it). I wonder what the top "plate" is that the old bottles dangle from ? It's kind of thick glass with a large center hole and 12 small holes around it. Can anyone tell from this picture? It looks like a fun project to copy.

The large glass thing looks like a fresh flower frog...I have a couple that look like that. It gives me an idea, now!!

Yep, I have the same model and like it very much, though getting the lid to engage in the correct position in order to close it almost always seems to frustrate me. If you end up doing a bunch of pressure canning, as opposed to just water-bathing with it, I suggest you get the pressure gauge and make sure it's calibrated correctly. Local County Extension agents are supposed to offer this service, but I have no direct knowledge if this it true. My local Ace Hardware sells the gauges. Have fun!

No, I don't buy myself a Christmas present. Which is not to say I don't buy something for myself or the house when I come across a great price while shopping holiday specials. I MAY buy myself a gift this week, but not to wrap and put under the tree. DH and I haven't exchanged gifts on Christmas for a number of years, focusing mostly on children in our lives and my mother then a couple of charities. But I lost an earring in July. My everyday pair that I could wear without removing for weeks at a time, often only taking them out for more special occasions or on my way to have my hair cut and colored (where I don't wear jewelry). They weren't exceptionally valuable, but little white gold hoops with small horizontal baguettes. Now I don't have hoops, I have hoop. Long time jeweler here is retiring first of the year and I don't know the young man who has bought his business. The jeweler has been generous with his trade ins, I may go see if he has what I need on the chance that policy will be changing when the store changes hands.

I have kind of a cute story. In 1982, I was a recent college-grad, newly moved to San Francisco, and during the Christmas season, I walked past the SPCA's adoption event on Market Street at lunchtime one day. I've always been a huge dog lover, and impulsively decided I wanted to buy all the dogs chews for Christmas, so I stopped for a few minutes to talk to the woman in charge to find out how many dogs there were in total, where I could drop the chews off, etc. We had a good 10-minute conversation. During our conversation, I was slightly aware of a youngish man standing off to the side of us, but Market St. is a busy street with lots of people around, so I didn't pay him much attention. Anyway, after I made a plan with the volunteer, I walked quickly away, because by now I was a bit delayed getting back to work after lunch. Half a block later or so, I suddenly, I felt a bit of a tug on my arm and turned to see the young man who had been listening to my conversation with the SPCA volunteer walking quickly as if to catch up with me. "Excuse me," he said, with a heavy Eastern European accent. "I sorry to be nosy -but I never see this before. You are buying shoes for all the dogs for Christmas?" It just cracked me up, to think of him sitting there thinking, "These crazy Americans, they buy shoes for their dogs!" I think I got him straight, but the funny thing is now, nearly forty years later, it wouldn't seem all that bizarre to buy shoes for dogs!

Oh, that's pretty and cheerful, I think you'll love it. I also have an Emile Henry pie plate, Lakeguy/David gifted it to me when I broke Grandma's old Peach Luster pan. I just sat down and cried, and he was such a sweetie, he sent me the Emile Henry with a note saying that he knew it wasn't Grandma's pie plate, but it was the best he could do. It's a really nice pie plate, I like it a lot and it's lasted well, it's 7 or 8 years old now and still not a chip, so it's durable. What a great idea for the old glass flower frog - now if I can just find it! I know I have one somewhere - that will be my project when I get home from work - looking for the frog! Thanks for the great idea.

:) I not only have a frog just like it- I still have the depression glass bowl it fits.

it's quite an effective little device for rooting cuttings of impatiens and other 'easy rooting' things.

What an adorable idea! Love the frog! I really enjoy hanging lots of glass thing-a-ma-jigs in the windows to catch the light and create fun for those days when we cannot be outside! I know I have some of those frogs somewhere--now, let's go look!

It's a bobeche. It is used under the "candlestick" in a crystal chandelier. The little holes are for the crystals that hang from it. They are fairly easy to find and come in all sizes and are nearly always glass or crystal.

It also looks like the base of an old glass lamp. I have many old glass lamp bases and they can come apart, so this may be the base. I have one that also has the holes around edge. It is just decoration for the lamp base.

Doesn't look very "trashy" to me - I guess that was a while ago.
