telephone table before/after

Found this cute table at a yard sale a while back for 50 cents. The ladies thought it was pretty funny that someone would actually pay for their 'junk'. Luckily, my sister loves to sand. She sanded and slapped on some stain. I rubbed it with fine steel wool, and bingo, 50 bucks!! It's a little large, though, for a cell phone. lol Linda

Linda, I can see from your past posts that you are really into turning Trash to Treasure. - Forgot to post the pic of the telephone table here though, will wait for the pic!

Hi, I love your telephone table! It is in great condition! Last year I was antiquing and found a table like yours that was not in as good condition and it was priced $35.00. There were some scratches in the finish and the upholstery on the seat needed to be replaced. I think yours would be worth 60.00-75.00. That is a conservative estimate on my behalf. I don't feel that it is poplar as that does not hold dark stains very well at all. Usually poplar is Painted with a base color and then a finish is "built" up on it, using faux graining techniques. Of this I am very confident of. Yours does look to be a true hard wood, I would say mahogany. If you look at the back to the chair it has a poor stainig job on it. I think it may have been refinished at some point by someone who was not experienced.

Umm, sojay, I just needed to clarify my previous post coz I re-read it in the course of re-inspecting your gorgeous xformation. When I spoke of necessity/shabbiness being the mom to invention, I actually meant that whereas most other remodels are inspired by the fact that the original is shoddy, shabby or otherwise dodgy, your original space was not any of those. That makes the vision you had that much more impressive. Upon reviewing my post it seemed even to myself like I was saying that your original was shabby and I was quite horrified - not only to have said such a thing but also because it would have been patently untrue. Anyhow, I was just showing off your work to some friends.

Oh..I love the before look...but I love country... I think I know what you mean, Patti. When I first moved into this house 35 years ago, my favorite look was Shaker--graceful, but very spare. This is probably why I was content to live without a rug under the table for so long. My preferences have evolved over the years, and my appreciation for comfort has grown. So the look of the interior is softer and warmer than it used to be. I think it's still "country," though. I hope so, since the house sits on 31 acres of rural land. Not to mention all the money I've sunk into Country Living subscriptions. :-) Thanks, all!!

I have one similar to yours. I use it in my bathroom for storing towels and handcloths in.

Linda, it's beautiful! What an awesome transformation. I too love refinishing wood furniture. It's a good thing not everyone can see treasure's in their trash or we wouldn't have any fun! Where are you going to use it? If you are a reader it would make a great night stand. ~Justie~

This item was sold. I love fixing stuff up, and more so turning junk into some nutty thing. Because there are so many 'treasures' around the house and yard and no more room to keep them, most are given away or sold. The thrill is definitely in the hunt and the challenge of making it into something fun. Linda
