Here are some vases in my living room - the large one is from Honduras and has a Bavarian cane and some African fishing spears in it (plus a spray of dried flowers from a succulent plant). The smaller black one is Native American from Arizona and has nothing in it:

Oh cool, elunia, it IS a "wall pocket"! Family always just called it a vase. After reading the articles (thank you again, I never would have found them!) I think it's most likely my husband's relative bought it in the 50's when the wall pockets were becoming popular. While it isn't marked with a famous maker, it is painted with more care to its details than many. So I don't think it's in the cheapest knock-off category. Maifleur, there is another hole that I didn't photograph. If it's hung on a wall by the hole on the back, there is a separate "vase" hole in the bird's neck. Family member only kept a small decorative spoon in it, never flowers or anything wet. We like it plain, so have never put anything in it. It doesn't seem like it's meant to hold water to me.
