searching for a paint dipping technique

Hello all! I'm new here - my name's Lynn! I've stopped in a few times while searching for something and love some of the ideas I've seen on here. I do lots of painting, crafting, sewing - pretty much whatever I can get my hands on! A friend of mine is trying to do some pieces for a craft fair - she basically wants to base-coat everything white, distress and then apply waterslide decals. I was telling her about something I came across during a search one day, where a lady had set up a paint dipping station, using big plastic rubbermaid type containers and basically a drying rack above it. It seemed like such a novel process for base-coating lots of little pieces rather quickly. Of course, now I can't find the site again to save my life. I can't even remember what I was searching for at the time. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Would anyone happen to have a link to the woman's site/photos? It seems like she had some info on there also about what type of paint she used and that she thinned it a little with water, but I don't know the ratio, etc. I'd greatly appreciate any help!!

Wow! Thanks for posting that info Oddie. I loved reading all of her tips. Some I knew, but many I didn't. Always fun to learn better, easier ways to do things.

Paintin fool, I'm glad Oddie was able to help you. Hope that you and your friend will come back and post pics of your painted items. We love to see everyone's creativity. ;o)

I checked the site--Some good tips!
When we started traveling and doing shows, I had to 'teach myself' tips and things - in the 80's there were no computers to learn from-LOL
I mostly used an air compresser paint sprayer, thining the paint some, for my quanity work. Small things like toothpick holders, and Paper towel holder tops I dipped. I used house paint in a slightly off white-maybe an eggshell.
It took me awhile to learn those things! The craft shop where I first took painting classes, frowned on anything basecoated except by hand. They didn't do 100's of pieces...

Nona, I can only imagine their shock at the idea of anything not hand painted. Back then, they would have really frowned on any of the quick and easy painting we do now. They were so into brush strokes, and layered floats. The instructions on what few painting books you could find were so complicated that it really discouraged allot of would be painters. You were just ahead of your time, gal. ;o)

For myself, I am glad that it is more relaxed now, and that there are many painting designers who do simple cutouts and easy techniques. I call it "craft" painting. Not trying to create a masterpiece, just something cute for a holiday or gift.

Sure hope you will get back into doing some painting. We would love to have you post pics of current or past projects, and to join in on our discussions. You just never know what might inspire a new or wannabe painter to start a new a fulfilling craft.

Thank you so much for the info, Oddie!! Sorry it took me so long to get back since posting the question - I thought I had checked the box to receive an e-mail when a reply had been posted and I haven't rec'd any e-mails - so I thought no-one had answered. Guess I shoulda known better - everyone's sooo helpful here!!!!! I kept searching for a "dipping" technique when I should have been searching for "dunking", I guess. -LOL- I e-mailed the link to my friend - so I'm anxious to see what she does myself. I just recently moved from MS to GA and she's still in MS - so I'll have to wait till she sends me pics.

For most of the painting that I do, I have to go with you, Nona, on the air compressor/airbrush idea. I bought a super cheap airbrush kit off ebay several years ago just for base-coating projects. Two weeks later I came across an expensive Paasche airbrush at a yard sale - the guy sold it to me for a quarter!!! - granted, neither of us knew if it would work or not at the time - got it home, cleaned it, tested it and it works beautifully!! Thankfully, the bottles from the cheap kit worked perfectly with it. I've also used spray paint for a base-coat occasionally. I absolutely LOVE the faux finish rust paint by Rustoleum - it gives such a great texture to paint on - especially for some of the primitive designs that I've been doing lately. As soon as I have time to figure out how, I'll try to post a few pics. Right now I need to get off here and get some projects completed!! I currently have about 6 different ones going!

By the way, my apologies to Paintingfool - I wasn't trying to copy anyone - just kept trying usernames till I got one that wasn't taken and this one worked. :O)

    Thanks everyone,

    Paintin,
Welcome...No apology necessary. I did the same thing when I was trying usernames. Actually, I used PaintinFool years ago but forgot my password and had to come up with another one. You know what they say, it doesn't matter what they call you as long as they call you to the painting table - I know, a bit corny but it is used a lot in our painting club.

We look forward to seeing some of your paintings so start posting soon. I love seeing what everyone is working on. By the way, what part of Georgia are you in and where did you come from in Mississippi? The reason I ask is that we have so many painting chapters around and I travel a lot to paint with others and I might have met you!.

Hey Lynn~ I come from a little town called Liberty, MS, but have been living in Utah since 1990. Hopefully GA will be a little more like home than where I moved! ha From lush green to desert!

Yes, please come back and we'll teach you how to post pics. We have a couple of instruction posts that we'll be happy to bump up for you.

Thanks for the tip on the rust paint. I have a few projects that I really need that on so I'm gonna hit the store Monday to look for some. Welcome to our world. I think we all have a line up of projects a mile long. ha It's good and bad in it's own way, but I'm always happy to have something in the works and something to look forward to doing. The only frustration comes when I don't have time to work on anything. I thought I'd have more time during the summer, but with the kids home I've had much less. ~Anj

Had to take a short break - man it's HOT & Muggy outside today!!
So glad there's no hard feelings paintingfool - LOL - I was living in Magee, MS, which is a tiny town about halfway between Jackson and Hattiesburg. I moved to Sandersville, GA, which is another tiny town - about 50 miles from both Macon and Augusta and about 100 miles from both both Atlanta and Savannah. So I'm pretty much in the middle of nowhere - but it's a wonderful little town. I've had my fill of big cities, although I wouldn't mind being a little closer to one. Small towns make it difficult to get crafting supplies sometimes - our Wal-mart doesn't have a great selection. I haven't ever participated in any painting classes, wouldn't mind doing it sometime though. I just started painting about 10 years ago and haven't been able to quit. I've had to slack off for a while whenever I had to go to work, but I keep going back to it. It's kind of our extra income right now - we moved here for DH's job and it's not going as well as we'd hoped. :( I may have to set it aside again and go back to work for a while. I've been selling on ebay, but during the summer months sales really seem to slack off. Until I can learn how to post pics, I thought I could just give you guys some item #'s from some of my previous listings and you can see some of my work. You can just copy and paste them in the search box and it'll bring them up even though the auctions have ended.

    330141990561
    - this wallpocket is one of the pieces I used the rust paint on - I just loved the texture

    330137910368
    - this bucket went to a lady in England and she has it displayed in her craft shop there - that was so exciting!

    330129223311 -candle lamp

    330134891029 -door topper

Currently, I'm doing these 'primitive gatherings' - it's a little less time consuming than the artwork and figured I'd try more detailed items toward the holidays - they seem to do better then.

I'm off to the store for more wax right now!

Thanks so much, Oddie! I have to give credit to some other artists though - lately I've been painting a lot of Terrye French's designs and she really has some great ones. Not to mention her patterns come with terrific instructions. Thanks for the link, too - didn't even think of doing it that way - it's so good to have help!! :) I really enjoy painting and I'd say it's cheaper than therapy, but I don't think DH would agree.;)LOL

I'd love to see more of everyone else's projects. I saw the chair you did, Oddie, with the plant in it - too cute & a great idea! I know there's a gallery on here, but is there a way to go to a particular pic or do you just have to narrow it down by a date? I know I should probably read some help pages or something, but I've been trying to limit my computer time and get some work done - otherwise, I'd be on here all day!!

sorry! Iam not up on how to find things, guess I should read the help pages myself, always to busy reading the post! most of my photos of craft I just added to my post on the craft fourm if you are bored one day just go throu the pages, also didnt see that you had copied and pasted the numbers to your things.
I know you said you used the Terrye French designs, but I will face the fact that anyone can buy them but there is a talent to painting that not all of us have, namely me!
Good luck in your new home, I lived in albany Ga for a couple years, real nice people!

Hey ya'll. If you go down to the bottom of the page where the posts are there is a search you can do for the forum you are on or for the whole site. Just type in what you are looking for and it should bring up lots to look at.

Lynn~ love all your stuff. Terrye French does do wonderful designs. My kind of stuff for sure! ha Love the rust paint. I'm gonna try to go get some today. Do you like prim or do you do them because they sell well?
I have a lot of friends and family in Hattiesburg. I've probably driven thru Magee at some time or another. ha From Liberty, we had to drive 20+ miles to get to our nearest Walmart. Now I have at least 4 within 5 minutes of my house. I'll selfishly, but from the heart hope that your DH's job does better so things go better for ya'll, but also so you can stay home and paint with us. :)

Hi Kim~ welcome! I'm near SL. Are you a painter??

Thanks for the good wishes Anj - I sure hope things work out, too. I really like it here, everyone has been so friendly. I meant to mention about the rust paint - there's a little can that comes in the kit that you paint on and wipe off to get the darker tones to the rust - I've used it before, but didn't really care for the purple-ish tone. On the wall-pocket I just sponged on a few different colors of paint over it instead and really liked how it came out. I think I used a little black cherry, terra cotta and burnt umber - just dabbing a little here and there until I got a good mottled effect.
I do like alot of the prim, but my decorating is actually more olde world (old maps/books) and mediterranean (wine bottles/labels/grapes). If I decorated in prim, then I'd never sell anything! Although with the prim groupings I've been doing lately - I've realized that alot of the pieces I have collected to go with Olde world, cross-over well with the prim - so who knows, I may be converted one day. Then I'll have to go back to painting gingerbread!
By the way, whatever took you from MS to UT? My best friend lives in McCall Creek which is very close to Liberty. I'm originally from CA, raised in FL, and lived in WA state for 5 years before moving to MS. I would love to move back out west, but I don't think DH would ever go for it. All his family is in MS, so I was kind of surprised when he agreed to come to GA.

Thanks for the tips on the rust paint. I have a kind of Americana/prim thing going on at my house with some cows thrown into the kitchen. ha Yours sounds nice.

I'll try to give you the short version of my life if that's possible. :) When I was 19 my Dad decided to move out here. He had attended BYU as a young man and loved it here. There wasn't a lot of work in MS and a friend of his kept sending him newspapers and job opportunities from Utah so one day he hit what we call his mid-life crisis and decided to up and move the family here. I fully intended to see them settled and then get back to MS (I only brought one suitcase), but I got a good job offer. My DH is from LA. We were dating before I moved and after having a long distant relationship for 2 years he eventually moved here and asked me to marry him. Since I still had that good job when we married we decided to stay for a while and then move back. And now 17 years and 4 kids later and we are still planning on moving back sometime. ha It's still home for both of us. Same thing with us though. My DH has a nice position in a company and we are finally starting to do well and there are still no jobs in MS. ha Well, there are, but you know what I mean. :) His family are all struggling down there. ~Anj

Anj, I know exactly what you mean - it was the main factor in our decision to come to GA. There's never been a whole lot in MS (don't get me wrong - I've grown to love the place), but especially since Katrina the job market has REALLY gone down hill. There was a time when we had considered moving to Hattiesburg, but after the hurricane the population there jumped by something like 35,000 people. It got to where I dreaded a trip there as much as going to Jackson. Was your DH from the New Orleans area? I lived there for a short while back in the mid 80's and have gone back several times, but not since the hurricane -just couldn't bring myself to do it. I just did go to the MS coast in January of this year and it broke my heart to see everything gone down there.

My DH is from the Baton Rouge area, but like Hattiesburg it was inundated with people from New Orleans after the hurricane. I couldn't believe how many new houses have been built and you can't rent a hole to hide in anywhere and even if you could it would be way too expensive. ha I have a few cousins living in Hattiesburg and they have complained about the population burst as well. My DH's g-mother and my mom's family are down on the MS gulf coast...in Long Beach and Picayune MS. They got a lot of damage from the hurricane. I haven't been down since either. (We'll be taking a trip down next spring) The lose of those old houses along the beach will be enough to break my heart. Were the beaches in any better shape when you were down in January? It will certainly take a while for the economy there to recover and it wasn't that great to begin with. It sure is a shame.

So now I'll reverse your question on you, what made you move from CA to MS, well GA now? ~Anj

In Jan. I'd gone on a trip to Mobile with a couple friends to a big flea market there. Before coming home we drove to Dauphin Island - we couldn't believe how badly they'd been hit. I talked with a lady at a convenience store there who'd had a paper route on the island and after the hurricane over half her route was gone, not only the houses, but the property itself was underwater in the Gulf. That's why most of these poor people are fighting with the insurance companies, the property/land itself is gone. As for the MS coast - it was truly difficult to grasp how massive the devastation was, and still is, there. When you only see a picture or camera view of one area, you don't really have any point of reference or landmark to orient yourself as to what area you're looking at. Then you get there, and you slowly begin to grasp the magnitude of it because there ARE NO landmarks left. The beaches themselves are slowly recovering, and of course most of the casinos are back, but as you said all the beautiful old homes are gone, all the businesses & restaurants are gone - amazing to me was that a few of the signs remained, but the actual buildings were levelled. A few of the hotels have come back, but most are either gone or still in shambles. Most all the debris has been cleared away, but it's just such an eerie feeling to be able to see inland for blocks from Hwy 90. As I said, we were returning from Mobile and got on 90 there in Biloxi (the Ocean Beach bridge is, or was at that time, still out) - my friend said the devastation was even worse further west toward Long Beach, but I had had all I could take by the time we reached Hwy 49 in Gulfport - I was in tears and trying to drive, so I headed up 49 toward home.

As for my life history (a little of it I was telling PF about on the 'paint dipping' post)....I'll attempt to make a VERY long story short. I was born in Oakland, CA (biological father in the Navy), mom divorced then remarried another Navy man (my step-dad) who got transferred to Pensacola when I was 2. My step-dad retired there, so I lived there from age 2 to 14. At 14 my mom passed away from cancer and I went to live with my older sis whose (now ex)husband had been transferred to Jackson for his job. From there I moved back to FL briefly, met my ex-husband, moved with him to New Orleans, then San Diego, San Francisco, WA state (where he was originally from) and I finally decided to come back home (after 5 yrs. of h*ll)-fully intending to go back to FL. I stopped in MS to visit my sis and my brother (who had since also moved there from FL) and ended up staying there for the past 17 years. I finally got divorced from my ex and eventually found the love of my life (corny,I know)- his mom was born and raised in MS. He grew up in FL too from a Navy family and come to find out, had things been just a little different we probably would've at least gone to high school together. His father was just getting transferred out of Pensacola as mine was being transferred in. And, of course, you already know the reason for the GA move. When I first moved to MS, everyone told me, "If you stay 6 months, you'll never leave". I took it as you wouldn't 'want' to leave - little did I realize that the truth was that you can't AFFORD to leave! It's worse now because the cost of everything is going up, but wages there aren't. After 15 years of struggling there, we figured a change couldn't hurt. Besides, my brother and his family are now back in Jacksonville, so I'm closer to them and my oldest son is in the Marine Corps in NC so I'm closer to him now, too. My sis isn't happy about the whole thing since she's still in MS, but if things work out here, I'm gonna get her moved here eventually! LOL

OMG... this is turning into a novel...DH took my 2 youngest to the dentist for me today so it's been quiet and I didn't realize how much I'd rambled on...Sorry - I warned PF about this earlier! :) I need to get some work done before they get back.

I know, this place is totally addicting. Have you checked out any of the other forums yet? ha I usually get on when I'm eating my breakfast and lunch since I feed the kids first and I get to check things out and not have to eat alone. Eating lunch right now so excuse the smacking. ha

That's a lot of traveling and at least you aren't afraid to move where you have a better chance of making it. My DH's family wouldn't move if their families were starving. We try to help them out when we can, but he has 8 bros & sis and all but one of them are on the point of bankruptcy. It's like throwing money into a bottomless pit.

That's hard to think about, just missing your true love by a bit and could have saved yourself a few years of heck. But at least you found each other. It was meant to be. ha I was lucky enough to find mine the first time around. Sometimes can't believe we've been together so long.

I know it's going to be a shock when we get back to the coast. I'm looking forward to going, but not. In my mind I want to think they've made more progress in getting things put back, but then when I see it I'm going to be upset with the change.

Ok, I guess I'm done and need to get back to work. I'm cleaning out kids rooms. Joy. How can they manage to collect so much junk in such a short time???? Such a collection of nuts, bolts, string, rocks, bits of glass, electronic pieces parts, candy wrappers and broken toys. I've never! I've filled one trash and another bag for the donation center before lunch. There is still so much to go thru and I haven't even started on the girls room! Later. ~Anj

Yeah, I've thought alot about it over the years as to whether or not things would have been different had we met sooner, but in the end I've come to realize that I don't think I would have appreciated him as much as I do now!!

Cleaning rooms...sounds like a blast! I need to do that myself - it is amazing how much junk can accumulate in their rooms. I've got to go through all their clothes this week and figure out what they still need for school - I'm just thankful they don't have a uniform policy over here. That got to be so expensive last year. By the way, my oldest son(the one that's in the Marines) is 20, my other son is 11 and my daughter is 7. How old are yours?

Guess what?? It doesn't end once they are off on their own, the grand children come along and all of a sudden you are back to stage 1 - but this time it is actually fun. I taught me children how to wash clothes as soon as they could reach the knob of the washer. They also made their beds everyday - granted, the spread was crooked but I left it because they did it on their own. They soon found out if they kept it neat during the week they had Saturday mornings free to sleep in or play. We are trying to teach the grand children - identical twin boys 7 years and a very active 6 year old girl (and a baby girl at 1 year old). For some reason they can make a mess and we just don't mind - sometimes it is cute but that is how grandparents are I guess.

I am sure you have been told to enjoy them now because they sure grow up fast, and it is so true. My son is now 40 and my daughter is 36. The grandchildren think I am still 39!! I tell them I am never getting older because I still feel young inside - and those babies believe me because they love their YaYa and Gigi.

Yea, it's a real hoot cleanin those rooms. I'm about dead. ha I'm going thru clothes in the process too. We don't have uniforms yet either. I thought for a while they might be nice, but I've been informed by those who have to wear them that they are not. Some of my nephews have to wear white shirts and tan pants and SIL is constantly fighting stains. She said the people who decided on those colors never had boys. ha

My oldest daughter is 12 and going into Jr High this year. She is at church camp this week up in the mountains having a blast I'm sure while her mama sits at home worrying about bear attacks like a dork. ha I have that overprotective disease. In my defense they have had a lot of bear attacks this year.
Then my 2 sons are 9 and 7, and pulling up the rear is my daughter age 3. They keep me very busy, slightly frazzled, but always entertained. :)

So what did you say you were working on this week painting/craftwise? I have been painting on a few various little things (ornies, a turkey plant poke, a gingerbread) while I'm trying to decide what project I want to start on next.

We kinda highjacked this post didn't we? ha Should probably move over to the Conversations side. Do you know how to get there?

Lynn~ did I scare you off with my talk of conversations?? :)

PF~ I missed your post before. We use timers and at the end of the day the kids have to spend 15 minutes picking up their things around the house and 15 minutes cleaning their rooms, but every now and then you gotta do a cleanout cause they sure can packrat some stuff. ha They also have trash duty, and put away laundry. Not brave enough to let them wash it yet. I started to teach them to clean their bathroom, but had to reserve the toilet until later because DS kept getting the toilet brush stuck in the toilet!!!
My mom is the same way with my kids. She was such a perfectionist with us, but the g-kids can do whatever they want and make any amount of messes. ~Anj

Hi Anj - I swear I didn't get scared off and I apologize for abandoning everyone - it's just been a rough few days. I've been trying to get everything straightened out with the kids for school. I had gone to the schools here at the beginning of the Summer to fill out paperwork and get their records transferred, but evidently none of that was taken care of.
On top of that, my dear friend over in MS (the one I was searching for the paint dipping info for) had a heart attack the other day. So when I have been home this week, I've been on the phone most of the time. She has become like a second mom to me in recent years and I'm really worried about her. She's doing well right now and they have surgery scheduled for Monday, so we're hoping and praying all goes well and maybe after that I can breathe a little sigh of relief. Until then, I'll try to check back in, but may be out of pocket (and a little out of sorts)!

Oh by the way, PF - the one about your son, very funny - he sounds alot like my oldest.

Lynn~ Glad you are still with us. I was giving you a little tease, but so sorry to hear about your friends troubles. Hope she'll get thru that ok. I can certainly understand your worry.
The school stuff reminds me that I need to check to see if my jr high student has all her shots. I think they need some kind of booster when they are teenagers so I'd better check on that today.

I probably won't be back here today either. I'll be cleaning carpets and working in the yard so ya'll have a great Saturday. ~Anj
