Cleaning and varnishing an oil painting

Hello, I bought an old oil on canvas which needs cleaning and sprucing up. Does anyone know how I can do this myself?
Is there any product I can paint over the top, once clean, to give it a little sheen. When I rubbed a corner with a damp rag the color looked much more vibrant which is what I am trying to achieve .Thanks for any help!

I recently saw this on T.V. where they were restoring an old painting. I'm not sure what was used but, it sticks in my mind that water was not part of it.

I know I'm of no help, but I don't want you to ruin it before you really find out what you should use. Good luck!

Have you tried art galleries, painting classes at schools/colleges/ internet?

I'm just now seeing this. Sorry I didn't see it before. You can coat the painting with Damar Varnish. It protects the painting (lasts about 100 years) and also gives it a sheen.
