What can I do ??

Hi everyone,

A friend has asked me to paint a chessboard on top of a table for him. The table has an oak finish BUT it has a poly finish. He used a product called Min-wax Polyshades.

Will I need to sand the finish off ?? Then will acrylic paint work ?? Could I use an oil paint on top of the finish... maybe one of the fast drying oils ?? What about applying the same product in a darker color...would that take?

I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks you,
Holly

Gosh, Holly, my best advice would be to call or email the Minwax company and ask for their advice--they are the experts on their product.

I'm sure that will be a fun table and look beautiful too when you get it all finished.

Hi Holly, I wonder if you could paint an "acrylic medium" over the top of the min-wax sealant, let it set overnight and then paint the chessboard on it. Michael's Craft Store and Joann's carry these "mediums" in the decorative paint section. I personally use Folk Art paints and mediums a lot but another good brand is "Americana." If not that, ask at Home Goods or other hardware store for advice. Maybe a wall primer would do the trick. You might have to roll it on two or three coats to cover the Min-Wax but it's a thought.

Thanks everyone.... I think I'm going to tape that area off and sand it down some. Paint the dark squares then apply a final finish.

Yes... I'll send pictures !!

You should be able to paint over the poly with paint and then seal the whole thing. The craft paint won't come off if it's sealed properly.

Good luck
