Can someone help me?

My husbands daughter was evicted from her apartment (she got fired and could not find another job nor could she get unemployment) and she has an 8 year old. She didn't have anywhere to go so I agree to let her move home so she could finish her 8 mo trade school. she finished the school but cant take her boards because she doesnt have 150.00, but she wont get out of bed and go look for a job so she can take her boards and move out? When i try to talk to her she is disrespectful and doesnt feel she needs to tell me what she is doing. We always wind up in an argument because I cant stand her attitude and the way she speaks to me. I have asked her to find other resources, section 8, emergency housing, friends, other family members (no one is willing)but that she needs to go - she wont! what should i do to get her out?

Where is her father in all this? I'd think a deadline along with house rules (yeah, I don't care the lady is 34, she lives at home she can follow house rules)should be coming from her father.

No, normally a 34yr does not have to report and/or account to her parent/s, but when they live under daddy/mommy's roof, 'normally' flies out the window.

You'll be the whining nagging busybody witch with it all coming from you. Husband needs to take control of the situation. Perhaps Dad can loan her the $150 with the terms of payback. After she does the boards, she hits the pavement seeking employment, give her x amount of time blah blah.

While it may take her a bit of time to get the employment and have enough to move there is no reason in the world she can't be helping around the house, respecting all household members ect. Realistically decent jobs are hard to come by right now and when one opens there is a lot of people trying to jump on the few openings. She may have to take something 'below' her qualifications to get started.

If she was fired, evicted and now staying in bed all the time, is she depressed? If husband thinks that is a possible, he should see to it she gets up, goes to a dr and gets herself back in order so she can move on. You don't mention how she was pre all her current troubles and behavior. Was she motivated, hard working? If she stays in bed all day , who is taking care of her son?

Give her the $150 already! It's probably just an excuse, but so long as it's a legitimate excuse, she won't move forward. Add to that that her chances of passing her boards decrease the longer she puts off her exam.

Once she's passed her boards, she needs to find a job and DAD needs to make sure it happens, including enforcing a deadline.

I know What you mean, my kids always loved and played with daddy,even just after they had seen him be abusive.I dont know the answer to that.Although my eldest who is 13(she isnt biologically his)but he did bring her up since she was 4 months old and she didnt know any different has her real dad has never been around,she saw alot of the goings on ,always loved him ,untill she got to about 8 or nine and then she changed towards him,and now she absolutly hates him,when my other two kids (his kids)go to see him,she never wants to see him again.She will never forget what he was like,and I hate myself for putting her through it.my second daughter was two when I left him,she too had nightmares all the time,talked about monsters and stuff when she woke,but she still loved daddy,and still does.Im convinced it was the shouting and abuse she was witnessing.Now she is four and sleeps soundly,she does have the odd one or two every so often.google parents fighting hurt children,im sure nightmares will pop up somewhere.I may be wrong about your daughter because nightmares arnt uncommen,but Im sure thats why mine had them.

Hi Jenn, Wow! I almost could have written this about 4 years ago. Many details are the same: depressed 15/16 year old (that started out cutting herself), then a suicide attempt, and bipolar & borderline personality disorder ex-wife. Eek! You have my heartfelt sympathies so my first advice is DON'T FEEL ALONE! :) and you are not crazy for feeling the way you do. It's hard for the best dad in the world to make up for the possible inherited emotional makeup and the influences of a psycho ex-wife. I dated my boyfriend for 3 years before we got married; after each being divorced once and knowing how hard it is to make blended families work we wanted to be careful. He had custody for 9 months out of the year, the mother had the summers. Most of our problems came to light after we were married. After the suicide attempt the SD stayed 9 days in a psyche hospital for troubled teens. My husband and I were blamed by some of his family and the ex-wife for his daughters problems. Her caseworker at this hospital was horrible as the ex-wife had convinced her we were the root cause of it all and I left in tears one day. Had he not stood up for me to his family I very well may have taken my son and left. But, he did stand up for me and he is a good, good man so we are still together and are now empty nesters. My second piece of advice is counseling - for everyone that will go; you and your boyfriend and especially the SD. But be careful, we had some bad ones during our troubles so make sure you get a good one. Don't be afraid to try another if the first one doesn't work. I guess it boils down to you weighing out what your relationship with him means to you, keeping the welfare of your daughters in mind of course as it seems like they are still young. Sounds like you jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire, so to speak. Not fun. However, kids grow up and (hopefully) start their own lives, so are you better with him or without him? My last piece of advice is pray. Pray and pray some more! Ask other people to pray for you and her as well. And find someone to talk to - a counselor, minister or the like, not just a friend. There is hope. Now at 21 my SD is really growing up and maturing. She has gotten off her anti-depressants and is beating her depression. She has moved away which means she's also far away from her mother who tends to cause problems. We have been taking small steps in the last year to building a new relationship and we are making good progress. Good luck to you!

Thank you both for your responses. Amber i do tell my daughter under no cercumstance is she allowed to disrespect him. She has had her privileges taken way on a monthly base. Usually he is the one who picks the punishment and for how long. Sometimes im not exactly sure what all he takes away. The last time he punished er he took everything away from her. She doesnt have tv computer, netflix, going to movies for over six months. I unfortunately did not heard the punishment, because the day he gave the punishment i was recovering from a bronchoscopy. I thought I had heard him say she can not play on anything he bought, but unfortunately i was wrong. She is banned from everything. She can only play with her toys and read books. My husband has always had my oermission to disciplinw our daughter. I've tried very hard not to step on his toe when it came to punishing her. Even though six months of no electrinics is a pretty tough punishment for an eight year old, i've still stood behind him. She had a project last month and my husband refused to help her because of how she treats him. He feels that she wont fail becausebof her age and will give her a grade for effort. I however feel completly different. School work is not something i am going to say no to. No my husband does not have children of his own. Our daughter is his first shot at being a parent. He goes by how he acted as a child and expects the same way, he was a good obedient kid. Myself, on the other hand, gave my parents a challenge. I didn't do bad things against the law but i gave quite a few gray hairs to my mom. I know he cares about her but even i have doubts. I understand how mean she can be, trust me she hurts me the worst when she gets in one of her moods. However no matter how much she mistreats me,im still her mother. I should always be there for her. He is a dad now and he should also be beside me helping her through this. We have tried sitting down with her and explained the things we would be able to do as a family if only she listened to what we asjed her to do. She seems to behave for a few days and goes back to the same way as before. Unfortunately she is half the time with us and half the time with her bio dad so she gets a break from her punishmebt. When she comes back we have to start all over again. I've tried to explain to my husband she is just a child, usually when ahe is not around, but he doesn't follow. To him he just see an evil kid who will not change. He has even said out loud that if she doesnt change that she will one day be flipping burgers at a fast food joint. Anytime i sit with him and talk about her it's always negative. He doesnt even believe her teacher when we were told how smart she is and how polite and respectful she is. I was evwn stopped by the before and after school care staff last week, on how polite and respectful and willingness to help she was.

You know, the more research and blogs I go on regarding the topic of being a step-parent (to children of divorce), the more I think Dr. Laura was right. Dr. Laura said that divorced parents should not remarry (nor even really date) until their children are out of the home. Just seems to me that whomever the divorced parent remarries or gets involved with, winds up paying a high price for someone else’s divorce. When you marry someone, you are to be connected at the hip, so to speak. Sometimes this works where the step-children (adult or not) recognize dad or mom’s new spouse. But, usually the step-mom, for example, winds up a) having much responsibility for these children with no recognized authority, and b) becoming the scapegoat simply because it is much easier to go after step-mom, a non-relative than going after a relative, blood. AND, I’ve come to understand that there are some with children who even think that when they remarry, their spouse somehow magically agreed to be put in that position! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read something like, “Oh, well you knew so and so had children, so now that they are breaking your heart and trashing your home and making your life a hell, you have to put up with it.” Sorry! If anyone expected that when they married someone with children, then there would be no remarriages period. Which brings me back to my original thought. Maybe Dr. Laura was right. Divorced parents should not remarry (nor even really date) until their children are out of the home. (Sure, there can be problems with adult step-children too, but if one thing, disengagement is easier with adults.} Seems like two people can’t stand each other, get divorced, and the ones to pay the heaviest prices are their children and the people they go on to remarry. Very selfish of these divorced parents, in some ways I think.

Lots of luck to you teri . sure give her the money see what she does with it. she may use it for what its intended for and maybe not. but its ok you will only be out 150.00 thats just chump change to some..but when a week goes by and she needs 200.00 for something else go ahead and give it to her. and after 6 months and she is still sleeping all day maybe she will find her way out of the bed to get something to eat.of course be prepard to do the dishes. my steps are all adults they get whatever they want from good ole daddy.. and what ever you do hubby will always see you as the bad one even if you are trying to come to good terms about the whole situation.

My 22 year old son moved back in six months ago... he had a plan to stay 2-3 months & work to save up money so he can move out. He has since quit his other job when I hired him to help on deliveries. After a couple of months, he quit me. Now, he sleeps all day & won't get a job. I gave him a deadline of the beginning of January & it is upon us. He still isn't working but my other son is coming back... the plan is now for them to live together & I may be writing out a check for two months rent & help them move in.

The least any adult child living at home can do is abide by basic rules & help out with chores, especially if they are not paying any rent. My dad told me, when my kids were minors, that if I ever became homeless... my kids were welcome to come live with him but I was on my own. Now, I know my dad loves me & does not want me in a cardboard box or living on the street, but the message was very clear that I needed to prioritize rent as #1.... and I always did. I could live without electricity (and did a couple of times) but allowing kids to move in & do nothing is not helping them at all. I am going to get tough with my son this next week... I'm not looking forward to it but he's had four months warning... and he can't even wash a sink of dishes! Play time is OVER!

And I agree, it needs to come from the parent... NOT the stepparent.
