Social networking is such a sticky situation to get into!

SD got a MySpace page when she turned 14. She never told DH, even when BM (supposedly) told her to tell him. I'm not sure how DH found out, but on the trip for the wedding, SD's boyfriend (at the time), whom had never met me or DH, asked to be my friend on MySpace. I RARELY get on there so I was shocked when I got the e-mail notification. How would he have known me (we weren't married so I had my previous name still) unless SD told him who I was? I wasn't friends with her on MySpace and neither was DH. I asked DH what to do and he said to ignore it and don't worry about it. Strange, huh?

A year or so ago DH became friends with his son and DIL on Facebook. It's been really great for him to keep up with his grandkids.

After we got back from son's wedding, DH suggested I ask them to be friends. I told him no. That I was not going to befriend either of his kids on any social networking site unless they asked first. I want them to decide on what they want their relationship with me to be, and I don't want to force myself on them.

SD got a Facebook page about a month ago, and last week asked me to be her friend. I accepted, of course, but was totally encouraged that SHE chose to include me.

So, anyway, thank God for small steps!

Thanks Silver, No LonePiper I don't keep a list, I don't have to. In the quid pro quo scenario you suggested "he does a favor for me but I won't do a favor for him" is where the scorekeeping takes place. Since my quids are heavily discounted and theirs are so few it's pointless to even think that way. So, back on point...the Wii is not making the trip if DS7 actually goes. After running it past the group here I've wavered on the whole thing. No doubt that SS30 will put this in his quid pro quo quiver, I have to sacrifice DS7's Wii plus games in exchange for the "childcare" to take pressure off of me and DH while he recovers from surgery (not one call this week by the way from either adult stepkid on how the surgery went or the hospital visit) plus the drive to where they live in the exurbs. (the land beyond true suburbs but in the same county. We are from California, big counties,long drives.) On semi positive note SD36 did keep DS7 overnight while DH and I were at hospital. Literally dropped him off at home this morning before dawn because of a business appointment for me to clean up, feed and turn around for school since I was at THEIR FATHER'S hospital last night. As the stepmother I've realized that their lack of involvement, lower abdominal feelings towards their dad has very little to do with me personally. And even less to do with DS other than thinking he is geting their free silver plated ride through life. They haven't even called their dad through all of this!!!! WTF? No Wii. I think DS will have more fun at home with real neighborhood friends than with these fake, adult 1/2 siblings and their offspring.

Thanks all for the imput. I kinda danced around the issue with SD the other night "so with dad gone would you want to spend those nights with mom?" and she gave me a look like 'are you nuts' before stating 'NO!' So I guess we wouldn't have to worry about her, it would just be what BM thought when she found out. Turns out that we don't need to sweat it though - DH opted against the job. He wants to be able to coach the boy's sports teams and be here for their school things - they are too young for him to miss out on the important stuff that will be such a big deal to them. I have to say I was releaved - I told him to take it if he wanted and we would make it work, but I didn't really want him to. Truthfully I like having him home and would prefer he didn't go back to work at all, but he's starting to go stir crazy. He needs a job for the sanity!! Side note - DH does have custody and BM gives about $100/mo in support. We know we will be covering college!

"JNM, if you couldnt see the put down in it, your blind and deaf. I guess people here only see disrespect from stepchildren." People see what they WANT to see. People interpret things the way they WANT to interpret things. Personally, I've noticed a positive change in KKNY from when I first came here. But, if someone is dead set in keeping a battle going, they refuse to hear the other calling a cease fire. JNM is right. People are who they are and unless they WANT to change, they won't. Even if they want to change, sometimes they CAN'T. mommybear, I think your plan is a good one. It's important that your daughter doesn't feel like she's being punished for things someone else is doing. I'm interested in the statement: "We give a ton of positive reinforcement to SD but the minute we do she does something negative." because that describes my oldest son. He's 21 and as long as nobody tells him how great he's doing in something, he'll continue doing great. As soon as someone tells him 'good job', he starts screwing up. It's frustrating and the only answer we've been able to come up with is to not say anything at all. It's not a very good solution, so has anyone else has found something that works? (and it really is a disservice to him because he has lost a few jobs because his managers don't know that as soon as they praise his work, they run the risk of him messing up and it has affected him a few times in the workplace)

End, I wonder if you did both go make wills together, if your attorney could tip you off if he changed it again behind your back, wonder if it would be legal for atty to do so? To inform you, I mean? Geez, giving HIS parents your kids? I m assuming they are your kids together? Without sharing that decision???? I would also wonder if thats legal? My brother had me on his will as guardians of his kids if anything happened to him (he was a widower) and I had to go in and sign I would do this, did his parents do that???? I think I d approach him again with what you need to be satisfied with will terms, or evaluate the whole marriage..Sad situation for you, for sure...

That is great! I'm not a huge FB person, but I do have one. Since my younger relatives seem to be on it all the time it's such a nice way to not only know what they are up to but a great way to learn things about them that I never knew (a movie they like, a food they can't stand, etc.)

Thanks, everyone! It really made my day....made my week, even! She didn't have to include me, but she did, with no prompting from me. I see it as a huge step forward!

BM did something interesting. DH texted her that his father had passed away in order to try to make arrangements for SD to come to the funeral. She texted back "please let me tell her, I don't want her to be alone when she finds out." Just another way BM wants to be involved in everything.

And SD was sad about her grandpa dying, but she wasn't upset, which is understandable the way BM has alienated her from DH and his family. If she would've gone to her brother's wedding, she would've gotten to see her GP before he died. THAT should be on BM for not pressing SD to go. So now SD didn't go to either her brother's wedding or GP's funeral. When will be the next time she will see her GM? When SHE dies?

I think it is a great step forward for you, but I personally do not want to find out on FB what SDs up to.

I know that YSD22 is a party girl and posts about it on FB. I remember once she told dad stories how she studied the whole night and now is tired and needs to sleep (3 hours during the day). Both I and SO were clueless.

OSD29 was visiting from out of town and was clearly unhappy with YSD and i commented that poor YSD is just tired from studying. OSD rolled her eyes, and told me that she is lucky dad does nto have FB account because YSD posts regurarly what she does.

She was at a drinking party all night with some guy and was hangover next day, no, she did not study at all. And it was a day before MCAT and she did not do too well.

I never told SO. If i woudl be friends with SDs on FB, I would know what they do and would have to withhold it from SO and it would drive me crazy. I honestly do not want to know what they are up to unelss they directly tell me via personal contact.
