How much do you spend on your kids' xmas gifts?

Posted by sophia71 (My Page) on

I was just doing a budget this morning for Christmas. I have a 9 year old and an 11 yr old ss. I go a little crazy at Christmas (I can't help it! i think that I love buying the stuff as much/more than he loves to open them!) but I have never really added it up. My husband tells me we have to watch it this year as I am pregnant and due next summer.
Really, though, I am wondering if I go overboard. Anyone have any ball park figures of what they spend per child at christmas?

I don't spend much at Xmas.

The holiday has lost it's importance to me because it's become so commercialized.

I have a 13 year old and a 17 month old.

I'll probably spend $100 on the 13 year old and maybe $20 dollars on the baby.

I like to give gifts throughout the year.
Sometimes at particular occasions, at other times for no reason at all except I love my family.

But material things are so much less important than being together as a family and generously giving your love to them.

Just my 2 cents,
Keli

I'm awful with the Xmas shopping! I have two skids..5 and 7. I think we spent close to 400 on each! My fiance of course always wants to spend far less....like 50 a piece....but it's XMAS! I shouldn't have done it because we are moving into our new home in May, after our wedding in April! But, I got a lot when I was a kid.......so I'm doing what I'm used to I guess. As long as they don't turn into unappreciative, snotty kids I don't see the problem.
Happy Holidays!!

Not as much as we used to. We have more money now, but the holiday season has become just an excuse for conspicuous overconsumption. So we mostly don't participate. I think our total Christmas $$ this year will be about $300 for total family.

Most people don't need more debt, and spending money on small kids is foolish, IMO. As the kids get older their toys get more expensive but also more durable and hold their interest longer, for example computer games or special art supplies - young kids get bored too quickly, especially when they get a lot of things all at once.

My theory is spread it out over the year, with more emphasis on birthdays (their own special day) than on Christmas.

Well, once again, I did it! I have a tendency to shop until I drop ... all the while forgetting what I've already gotten for the kids! When the time comes to pull it all out and wrap it up, I think "oh crap, look at all this stuff I bought them!" ... :-)

But you know what? I take great joy in seeing their faces. In watching them enjoy their new things ... especially when they open something they *really, really* wanted! Priceless!

This year my kids got many gift certificates, and yesterday we took the kids shopping with their gift certificates. My husband told me after we got home that my stepdaughter spent one of her certificates on a birthday gift for me (my birthday's in a few days). How special is that? I'm humbled and honored!

My stepkids are 15 and 11. Five years ago when my husband and I were dating, I had a talk with him about Christmas spending...we over spent on them (as did their mother's family). We decided that they got 1/2 of their christmas with us and would therefore limit out spending. They get Christmas at both houses. So, this year we spent about 200 on each...and it has been the same the last few years. Our son is only 4 so his toys are not nearly as expensive so interestingly enough, although he only gets christmas at one house, we only spent about 80 on him.
