I've had enough...

The last 4 years of being a stepmom has come to an end for me. I've decided to leave my husband and his daughter.

My husband has a 9 year old daughter and I have a 9 year old son. My husband is extremely harsh and unkind to my son and does not treat the 2 kids fairly. He lets his daughter get away with murder, while the second my son does anything wrong my husband is the first to point it out.

I was in love with my husband, and now I resent him for allowing his daughter to disrespect me and always yelling at my son. His daughter has hit me and my son, and my husband will only give her a 5minute lecture. No consequences. I've had enough, I'd much rather be single forever and live in a peaceful home with my son than to be married and live in a home where rules only apply to half of the family. My mom and sister say I shouldnt call it quits because its a bumpy ride, but I say my first responsibility is my son. I'm not going to sit here and watch my so called family hurt him and destroy his confidenceand happy childhood.

I've given my husband plenty of chances to make this family work but he never follows thru with any of our plans.

We are one week shy of our 4year anniversary together.

Has anyone else here been in my shoes?

Ding-Ding-Ding!!! I have and stayed way too long.

Pack you & your sons bags and find yourself a nice little nest for just you two. I wish I had done it sooner but your boy is so young and you are clearly not happy.

Go be free, happy & peaceful. I think your thinking it through clearly..and give your boy a big hug from me.

Now go get your life back!

Thanks Cat! I'm ready to move on. My son will be happy to know that we are moving. I'll be moving in with my dad for a few weeks until we can find ourselves a new place. I hope the split and the move will go peacefully.

In early June, all the students at the Anshutz/CU School of Medicine who are going for a PhD (not a MD) take a 'preliminary exam', which can be brutal. It usually takes about a month to find out the results - and if you don't pass, you are either given a choice of withdrawing or - in his case - completing another masters degree. Which explains the language used by the school about how he was busy 'withdrawing' from the PhD. I was staying with my wife and daughter in an apartment a few hundred yards behind the hospital when all this went on - we were up in Denver at Children's Hospital getting my daughter's knee taken care of, she had a complete tear on her ACL. Hearing all the sirens, I thought it was some enormous car wreck or something, and then found out in the morning what had happened. What a mess.

((((Jamie))) you certainly have been through so much and I am sorry to hear of more upset in your life. I agree that in some ways it is good that your docs are being so thorough. I know it will be difficult to go through even more challenges but you are strong and you can do this. I am so proud of you and your attitude...you are a very inspiring woman. I think that you have the 4-day stomach flu. Both my wife came down with at the end of September - can't keep anything down - Have to be careful how much water you drink at one time. I was very sick for 3 days, then began to recover. Lost 5 lbs. And I had a flu shot 3 weeks before this flu. Apparently, its a much different flu than the ones the shots are for. By all means, do go to the doctor. If your boss gives you a hard time, ask him if he'd rather you'd come in and Urp! all over his desk! and expose everybody. A note from the doctor's office will verify how sick you are. In fact, if you call the doctor before going in and describe your symptoms, the doctor may advise not to come to his office. If its the same stuff that made the rounds in my neck of the woods, the gestation period between exposure and getting sick is 4 to 5 days. Your ability to "think straight" diminishes as you become dehydrated, and you'll become dehydrated if its the same thing I had.

"but other than that, mom's garden is off limits without an escort." :-D I love this thread!!! LOL My kids are so destructive in the garden!!! They pull up my plant markers just to make me mad - they think it's funny! And that's just the harmless things they do . . . they just love to "explore" . . . ha! It's fun - gardening with kids, and it can be heartbreaking . . . luckily, I've traded for replacements of the things they "explored." Rosary vine, with it's tiny heart-shaped leaves, are just too tempting for toddlers who find height is no obstacle for anything they want . . . every single leaf was plucked off and the vine quickly died. But it is SO cute when they ask "Is this a daisy or an iris?" and when they chase butterflies and roll over rocks for bugs, not so cute when they dig for worms, because that usually involves tearing up my beds and plants. Chickens are good weeders and excellent bug eaters, but you have to be careful. Ever heard of a chunnel? It's a chicken tunnel - google it. I knew someone who fed their goats their kitchen and garden scraps - not sure if you're supposed to do that, I know nothing about goats. Check out the "No Work Garden" book - it was interesting, but I can't garden like that, maybe you can. I forget the author. Trading for plants and seeds helps keep the costs down. I've even seen ads on Craigslist for cheap plants and seedlings and offers to trade, but there's more trading on this site. I didn't have too much luck on CL, and I always met the people at a Walmart or someplace public. I remember at least two different people posting on my local CL trying to sell or trade off their extra watermelon and veggie seedlings; lots of tomato plants on there, as well. Of course, sometimes the time and driving involved in messing with the deals on CL aren't worth it. You will have a wonderful garden!

I wish you and your son well.

If the children will still be going to the same school for at least a while, you might want to go into the office and see about having the son moved to a different teacher. Being in the same school might be hard, but the same classroom could be upsetting to your son and affect his grades. I'd hate to think the SD spends her school day teasing or bullying your son. If they'll still be in the same building, the school needs to be aware that additional 'trouble' could be brewing between them. Maybe if your district is large enough they'd let you transfer you son to a different buidling.

From your earlier posting "I've contemplated leaving at least every 3 months in the last 4 years. It doesn't seem to get better"... I'm not sure you can blame everything on the SD as it appears you've known since the very beginning that this relationship/marriage was not in your best interest. You gave it a good long chance but it never was meant to be for you and you sensed this clear back then. Don't let your mom and sister push and/or guilt you into remaining in this relationship. Time to think of only you and your son.

Take your time now, get moved into your father's, enjoy a house filled with happiness and love... and don't look back. One day at a time, rebuild your life and gather your strength...your son and you both deserve so much more than what you've been living.

move on peace is so important for your son and you. children at a young age can be really hurt by poor home life. it can effect him down the road. move on and be happy.

You are definitely doing the right thing. You are putting your son first and that is the right thing to do. It must be awful for him to be yelled at and treated meanly. Good luck to you both.

I'm glad your moving on! Just keep your focus on why your doing it and have some of your future mapped out for you and your son. And yes, if they go to the same school and are in the same class..switch your son. Good luck, hugs your way!
