So.... Guess who lives with us now?

SS's mom called yesterday to say that if we don't take him, she's giving him to social services (ie - foster care)... We said yes, but that he has to stay here for at least until the end of grade eight (so at least 19 months).

He moved in with a duffel bag last night and we'll do the rest of the move over the next few weeks.

Things have been quite smooth for us with SS in the past year or two, but I expect a few monkey wrenches now. I might need you ladies a lot more than I have lately!!

For those who don't know our story:

SS12 is not DH's biological son. DH met BM when SS was a few weeks old and they dated for 2+ years. BD is not in the picture at all (he's mostly in jail), so DH is the only dad SS has ever had.

SS had severe ADHD and has bipolar disorder, so he has a lot more struggles than many other kids his age. He's a nice kid though - smart, funny, generous, but he can be very difficult too.

BM ditched him whenever she possibly could to party and such when he was younger. Their attachment to one another is probably described as shaky at its best and abusive at its worst.

He was here for 6 weeks in the spring so that he and BM could work on their relationship. From what we can see, he tried but she didn't, so obviously things didn't improve.

Anyhow... here I am :)

Oh Ceph, good luck to you all! You guys are so caring; such great people! Not everyone would do what you are.

Are you all in counseling? Not just SS, but you and DH too? Maybe you want to look into it because if (when) things get a bit tough at times, if you've already been going it might give you a head-start, so to speak?

I'm sure you'll get a lot of great advice about the ADHD/bipolar/IEP issues. I'm not sure how much advice I'll be able to offer but I can provide support. ((HUGS))

Wow! What a turn of events!! When BM was pregnant, she was all about having him...now she's wanting to give him to social services? What kind of craziness is this?

What are you going to do as far as legalities? I forget...is your DH 'legally' his father? Was there ever a custody agreement?

How does SS get along with your DD? Is that relationship good?

I had planned my kitchen remodel intending to use a OTR MW. When I had all my ideas down I ran them by a kitchen designer who axed the OTR MW immediately. There were several reasons, one of which is the vent does not work very well. But the most important point I realized was the poor ergonomics of reaching that high. I am trying to keep ergonomics in mind. The Sharp OTC still sits up off the counter but not as high up as an OTR type. We are getting the Sharp R-1214. I also enjoyed looking at the following pictures of where others in this forum put their MW's. Leslie, they do have a home near me. About 4 miles right down the road. I live in Owasso, Oklahoma. Seeing Garth & Tricia around town is a common sight and one to behold too!. .haha He is a very friendly guy. I saw him in Target and barked at my husband "Follow me and get your phone out". .Garth was walking to the front door, I had already seen him around the bedding dept talking to some other people so I did not interupt. .then when I saw he was going to leave the store. .I said excuse me. .he stopped and came right up to me, stuck his hand out and ask what my name was. I ask him if I could take a picture with him, he whipped his ball cap around so the bill would not shade his face and smiled big and said sure. .Then he talked to us for a while, he is just like that, always has time for people that stop him. I was on cloud nine all day yesterday and still am. . There is no teaching my husband to take better pictures. .wish I could, he just doesn't have the knack. .Debbie

Parma .. well they are producing eggs yet, other wise I could send you some eggs. Let's see .. I could send you a big bag of Three Cool Chicks Gardening Gold .. otherwise known as a big bag of chicken poop. :D *LOL* Or .. you could hold out for eggs. ;) Most people think Clover is the prettiest. I think my favorite looks wise is Olive, I love her dark head and fuzzy face. I think Hazel has the nicest personality, she's very sweet. Clover just cracks me up, she's a total nut .. she comes out with some of the strangest sounds you've ever heard and is such a drama queen! I'll hear her out there griping about something and I always have to go see .. she makes a huge fuss out of nothing, but it's pretty amusing! Pam .. chickens are fairly easy to raise. When they are babies they have a greater chance of disease and it's not all that uncommon to lose a couple. We started out with four and lost one on Easter morning, not a great way to start the day! Most people feed them medicated feed to start off with to help stave off infection or disease, then switch them over to non-medicated about 8 weeks in once they have a better immune system. Basically when they are small chicks you keep them warm with a heat lamp, feed them good chick grower feed, keep their brooder ( ours was made out of a cardboard box ) very clean and make sure they have fresh water. We started ours out in the house since it was spring and still chilly .. they need to be kept very warm for several weeks until their feathers come in, you decrease the temp by each week as they grow. We moved ours out into their hen house at 10 weeks old with their heat lamp for nights, but we live in NC and it had warmed up a lot by then. You continue to feed them grower feed and baby grit until they start to lay eggs. Grit is ground stone bought at the feed store, since chickens don't have teeth they need this to help digest/grind their food. Then you switch them over to layer formula food and adult grit. The layer formula has more calcium in it and helps them form their eggs. Other than that they can have most fresh fruit and veggies as treat, they also like plain yogurt a lot .. mine love clipping from my herbs garden too. There are guidelines on the internet for how much room the chickens actually need, but most of the time the guidelines run too small. Ideally they need a fair amount of room for their coop, but not huge .. the girls coop ( house ) is 6' x 8' .. that's pretty large by most standards for three chickens. Their run ( yard ) is 8' x 10' and they are pretty comfortable in that. They have the full run of both during the day, at night they go into their coop when it start to get dusky out. I shut the door between the coop and the run when they go to bed, just for extra protection against predators although their run is built like fort knox. *LOL* We have dogs, so we can't let them free range, but if you can .. that's the best for them as long as the are protected from predators. Since we live in NC we don't get into the 20's but a handful of times a year, 10 F is maybe a once a year thing. So at night to start off with I'll leave their heat lamp on, if it's going to dip colder .. I'll probably plug in an electric heater for them, but that will only be a few times a year here. An adult bird fully feathered can do 30's - 40's no problem, but I'll still probably supplment their heat some. In the summer they can over heat in our climate, if it's going to get above 90F .. I plug in a fan for them just to move the air and make sure they have lots of fresh, cold water. I clean their whole coop and run once a week, with a quick, couple second spot scoop under the roost every day ( the poopiest part ). I then put down new wood shavings. Also before putting down new bedding I put down stall dry, which is made out of demetrius earth. It helps keep the fly population down and makes their run and coop fresh .. it doesn't stink out there and chickens poop can be very smelly, the stuff is great. When I clean out their run/coop and bring the wood shaving poop mixture over to my composting bins and chuck it right in. :) All in all it's not very hard to take care of them .. much easier than dogs and cat .. I have five dogs and one cat.

Wow, Ceph. It's going to be rough, but I think we all agree it is the best thing for him. If anyone can make this work you can.

On a side note - who the hell says take my kid or I hand him to social services?? Nice work, mom of the year.

Hi Ceph I agree you two are very caring and taking this on is a huge deal! What a lucky kid!

My nephew is also ADHD and bipolar, 15 now and has finally turned things around. I can understand BM's frustration with him but no excuse for just giving up. My sister went through the giving up phase at 12/13. My nephew was at his very worst. He was in the mental hospital 4 times in one year. He finally started in therapy and a psychiatrist got his medication regulated. He is no longer on any medication and is doing excellent. He did behavior therapy and manages his behavior himself ... A huge step. So there is hope!! It really just takes support and determination to turn things around for him. He is probably going to deal with some anger. My nephew was dealing with anger issues stemming from his father not heing active in his life and anger at his mother bc of his dad's absence and her giving up on him.

Keep us updated on his progress and how things are going. I'll help where I can but I'm not sure how much great advice I can give... However I will be a support for you and I offer you the best of luck and lots of hugs!!!

Oh man! What a piece of work she is!
I get that the boy can be difficult, but as a parent, you just don't get to give up.

He's very lucky to have you two in his life, and I'm confident that you'all will make the best of a very difficult situation.

Think you can get her to sign a piece of paper?

Exactly my thoughts!! No matter how rough my son or stepkids can be I would NEVER give them away!

Wow Ceph, I've always thought A would be much better of with you and your DH despite there being no blood relationship. You put so much time and effort into A, helping him learn self-control and to be a happier person.
I cannot believe a mother would do such a thing to her child but sadly there is too much evidence to the contrary :-( I hope A doesn't become downcast.
You and your DH are good people.

Mkroopy..... I agree 100%!!! If my ss bm just went away forever and never contacted him again.... I'd be a ok! SS would be a little upset at first but he'd move on..... and then he wouldn't have to cry everytime his mom neglected him.

Thanks, everyone, for the well-wishes and support!

So, we are 6 days in... and all is well.
He's had a few minor episodes of crankiness, but nothing too out of the realm of ordinary for an average 12yo. Otherwise, he's been wonderful.

He's hurting, and he's angry with his mom. But he seems more relaxed and at-ease than I've seen him in a looooooong time.
He's looking forward to switching schools and is hoping for a fresh start in many aspects of his life. He seems to be willing to put the effort in to get it, so I'm feeling optimistic about it.

He's been funny, respectful, helpful, friendly. He's played well with the baby (12mo DD) and been gentle with the cats. He's done his homework with minimal complaint. He's even (mostly) remembering to take his pills without being prompted.

He has an appointment with a psychiatrist tomorrow about his meds and such. BM is taking him because it was scheduled months ago.
I have an appointment with our Child and Family Mental Health social worker next week.
I've told SS and DH that we need regular counseling if we are all going to thrive in this situation and they are both on board.

Anyhow, that's what's up with us.

Glad to hear things are on track. Counseling sounds like a good idea, it's good that both SS and DH agree to go.

Your SS is fortunate to have you in his life and your DH and baby daughter are also lucky. My very best wishes to all of you.
