BM sent SS flowers for his 16th b-day!

OK. I'm not a prude. I don't believe that men can't receive flowers, given the right circumstances. But, holy Hyacinthe!! A bouquet of flowers (cheap ones, BTW), delivered to our door on the occasion of SS's 16th birthday? Is it just me, or does this sound bizarre to anyone else??

It's not what I'd send a 16 year old boy, I'll say that much. But at least she remembered his birthday! It's more than some BM's do.

Well, mattie, that's part of the problem. I think she did forget his birthday and this was her quick fix. He called her after receiving the flowers and she told him she had sent him a card on the previous friday (5 days before his birthday) -- it still hasn't arrived. If it ever arrives, I'm willing to bet that the post-mark is either the day of his birthday or later... she's such a loser.

Hi all, Not sure what all to say since I've been away so long. At least you still remember me. :D Re the way of eating question. I've changed my way of eating at least several times in my life, this most recent being lower carb. I try to keep it under 75, but don't always succeed. If I go very low, my heart gets more irregular, which makes me concerned. I don't eat desserts or junk snacks and deny myself things I want, like muffins, but don't feel like I'm getting the results now that I should given my diligence. I've kept my calories lower than what I'm theoretically supposed to be eating for most of my life. I wish the whole thing worked for me like it's supposed to. My relationship with that guy I've talked about for the last three years is difficult for me now. I don't think anything really bad is happening, but the closeness we had has pretty much ended over this last year, so I'm going through a grieving process, facing that some things I thought would last, didn't. Lots of my old issues have come up and it's been harder than I expected. I've been working on my art still so that part is good. Still not over the top, though. My younger son is going to be doing seminars on open source tools for .NET, and his first one is tomorrow on NUnit. Still haven't heard from the older one for three years now, though I've sent things, called, and left messages. Heather is still good, and I just ordered her some kitty food from the net that is supposed to be a healthy mix that is close to what kitties eat in the wild. I'll post this and then read more. I've planted another garden with lettuce, tomatoes, parsley, zucchini, broccoli, green onions, cauliflower, and different types of flowers, including a purple hibiscus bush and a yellow one. It's a good time of year here. Does anyone know what the story is with Happyto? Haven't heard about her in some time. She was here when I first started and had lost 80 lbs, but then ended up gaining it back when she started eating carbs again. And I remember when her husband passed and she got involved in her church, but I don't know what happened after that. Amy

Good Saturday afternoon from wet/rainy and cool (54 F.) Texas. I was up at 4:30 this morning, out of the house by 5:15, and heading to the Houston Zoo at 6:30 for St. Jude's 1st annual Thanks & Give walk. We had 300 of the 500 registered people show up in the pouring rain today to walk for St. Jude. I was shivering and shaking working registration, but it warmed my heart to see so many turn out and turn in huge amounts of money they'd raised for walking. I met Emmanuel, a precious 8-yr. old boy who lost his left eye to neuroblastoma last year. His 'fan club' was there to walk with him and they all dedicated their walk to him. I worked the bib dedication table where people filled out their "I am thankful for....." bib before pinning it on for the walk, and I was really touched by many of the dedications. Afterwards, the volunteers moved everything over to the 'after-party' where everyone ended up to have breakfast and receive their incentives for walking. I think a nap is in my near future, but I had to check online before doing that. Donna, I hope you can start posting more often. Pray for 'uneventful' vibes! Suzanne, maybe you'll sneak in a ride today after finishing your chores? And, what a cute message from hubby! Hey, BJ! I've been missing you. "the child may very well not ask to speak to his mom because he knows there is a rule that he can only speak to her once a day around bedtime" Nope, not the case. Unlike BM, my DH is the caring and rational parent who has his son's best interest at heart. He would never, EVER tell SS "you are only allowed to talk to your mom once a day."" SS just gets busy living with US and doesn't seem to think of talking to mom. Much like when he is with BM, he doesn't call DH except in the evening, close to bedtime I think Marie you are attributing qualities your 11 year old DD has, and comparing them to a 7 year old boy. Sorry, but boys don't seem to like to "chat" on the phone as much as girls do. I can already see that diff. between my DD and SS. Also, a 7 yr old is really not "into" talking on the phone much yet. Maybe when SS gets older, he will want to talk to BM or his dad more often---but for now, it is simply not an issue. I think you are giving the BM in my situation way too much credit here. She is not the caring, "involved" parent you are describing. I could go on and on about the times she has continually NOT put her child first. She with-held visitation for THREE WEEKS last summer because she was pissy w/my DH for taking her to court. DH talked to SS on the phone throughout the weeks sporadically, and SS sobbed one of the times, crying that he wasn't "allowed" to see dad. AWFUL. Many times now when his mom calls now he asks his dad if BM is fighting. Slowly but surely, he is begining to see his mom is WACKY. It's to the point that SS tries to listen in on DH's phone convos b/c he thinks BM is causing problems. Last week, BM called him, and at the end, she asked SS to put his dad on the phone, and SS said "no because I'm afraid you're going to get mad at him." He knows. This woman is irrational and insane. She sent her current DH to the hospital last winter b/c she got drunk, and ripped the phone off the wall, and chucked it at his head---he had to get stitches. The year before last, she was fighting w/her DH, and I guess he stormed out of the house, and IN FRONT OF HER SON AND HER STEPDAUGHTER, she took a KNIFE to the blow-up Frosty the Snowman in their front yard. SS "laughs" about it occasionally, but DH and I both know it's a defense mechanism. Talk about terrifying for a child---to see a parent that out of control. Last Christmas Eve--it was DH's night, but BM begged him to let her have SS until Christmas morning. DH consented. Well, guess what SS did that night? He spent the evening w/his stepdad at his stepdad's parents' house while BM stayed home gettgin plastered. She called my DH and me a gazillion times, sobbing about how she wanted a divorce, hated her life, etc. Nice, huh? You can sit there all you want and say that she is a caring, involved mother. Yeah, she loves her son, I will give you that--but she is an alcoholic with serious mental issues. We will do what we have to do to protect OUR FAMILY from her behavior and her antics. A direct line of communication to SS is not needed and actually, is very detrimental to our family. And, truth be told, to SS. DH wishes BM had LESS influence over him than she already does. Unfortunately, until she really screws up, joint custody will continue---but that does not mean BM needs to be in constant communication w/their son on his father's time. The woman has some serious issues, and everyone knows it---the former GAL, the current GAL, the judge, our attorney, and heck, even BM's own family knows it. We have a letter ON FILE in our court case from BM's cousin stating that she has a serious drinking problem. If we ever go to trial, this cousin will testify on our behalf.

Today is my dad's birthday & we work in the same office. I talked to him about an hour this morning & finally while writing something down with the date, I remembered his birthday & blurted out Happy Birthday! I feel terrible but does that make me a horrible daughter? I didn't get him a card or anything... and I see him EVERY DAY.

I'm sorry your SS is embarrassed by his mother's 'gift'. I don't know how anyone else would find out about it unless you or he say something. I mean, the neighbors can assume the flower truck was for you... they can think you have a wonderful husband that sent you flowers. It's an odd gift, I will give you that... my SD's grandma showed up at SD's birthday party the day AFTER her birthday with a bouquet of Tulips & I thought that is an odd gift to give a 9 year old. But, she probably wanted an excuse to pop in from an hour away to see if we were really having a party for her like we said.... maybe she thought we were lying to her like her mom does? But, like someone else said, at least she remembered his birthday ~ even if it was belated.

Yes,imamommy, I understand that anyone can forget the birthday of a loved one. We all get preoccupied with whatever's going on in our life and even the most thoughtful person can forget an important date. However, this behaviour is not rare. Many important dates in SS16's life have come and gone without any acknowledgement from her or her family. It's difficult and hurtful for him, but there's nothing any of us can do about it, except try to make up for it by making a bigger fuss over him than we normally would.

My point was that I just thought it a very bizarre "gift". And, especially since it was his 16th, which is a very special birthday for most kids.

It is a bizarre gift. But my SD's mother started a custody battle on her 8th birthday, abandoned her later that year, did nothing for her 9th birthday (after she promised she would.. she actually went out & left SD with a babysitter the day that she had told SD they would celebrate; yet she celebrated her BF's kids' birthdays which are in the same month as SD), she actually got her on her 10th birthday but didn't do any of the stuff she had promised, left early & had SD's grandma drop her off to us in tears, and for her 11th birthday I sucked it up & invited BM to the party I made for her... BM was 40 minutes late (we had the room for 60 minutes), didn't bring her a gift & when SD asked her to spend an hour with her after the party, BM said no. It's heart wrenching to watch a mother hurt & torture her child like that, yet I have to grasp onto the positives... like her mom actually came to her party. It's hard. I come here & vent, it must seem like I hate BM & she will never do anything right in my eyes... but I know that's not true. It isn't MY eyes that matter... and her relationship with her daughter is HERS. She is making it what it will be & there's nothing anyone can do about it. Yes, it still makes me angry to see the pain she causes SD. It really makes me angry when SD's reactions to it, cause ME grief & it affects MY relationship with SD. Again, there isn't a lot I can do about it.

I would look at the flowers as a positive... at least she gave an acknowledgment. How he feels about that, is going to determine his own relationship with his own mother. You and your DH can make the day special for him but you cannot make up for his mother's shortcomings by making a bigger fuss. Make the bigger fuss because it's his special day & you love him, but you can't do anything about what his mother does or doesn't do. I know that's hard... sometimes we have to stop & keep reminding ourselves of it... daily... minute by minute.
