The dreaded call and how to prep for it

Grandma said she will give her dd our phone number again so she can contact the kids. My issue is it has been 8 months since she called. And she moved out of state without so much as a good-bye. There are a lot of feelings that have arised as a result of that. I am worried about how the kids will react when she calls because bm has been out of sight out of mind and this call will stir up a lot of emotion. Not so much ss's emotions because he really thinks of her as more of a distant relative. But the girls are more sensitive.

Should we tell the girls that grandma says she is giving bm our # and she may call. Maybe talk to them about their feelings so they can prepare for the call and maybe think about the things they want to say? OR do you think its better to wait and see if she calls and let them deal with it in their own way then. And we can be there for them after?

If me, I would say nothing at this point. She may not call at all. IMHO if she really had wanted to call all these long 8 months, she would have called around and found out how to. I mean, she does have her own mother's number, right. I assume she has spoken with her mother at some point in the last 8 months, yet GMa did not give BM the number. Could mean GMa was never asked for it, else she likely would have handed it out being remind by BM on phone right then.

If the call does come, again, if me, I would let dad handle it. And if I dad, I would simply tell BM that it's been a long time, he wants the kids to have some time to prepare and that she is welcome to call back at such n such on such n such day. Fair is fair, mom walked out and poofed and kids should be given a chance to have a bit of time to think about it. The kids should not have a sudden unexpected phone call.

We were thinking about that lately in our house, wondering what to do if BM ever calls (for us it has been 2 years since there was any contact) we have decided that if bm ever calls our home, we will not hand the phone over immediatley to SD. If she can wait THAT LONG to call, than she can wait another stinkin day to talk to her, so we can sit down, explain to SD that BM has popped back up, work through the emotions and determine if SD even WANTS to call her back at all. IN my book a parent that abandons their child for that long has absolutely no right to pick up the phone and expect for anyone to be happy that they called...
I wouldn't say anything now to the kids....if you do and she doesn't call it will just stir up a hornets nest of emotions for them.........

Dave and Paul raise good points. One has to also be very careful of self-appointed "International Inspectors" who prey on children, the elderly, and the infirm. Sometimes they call on the telephone -- if you listen closely, you can hear the sound of other hustlers working their pitch in the background -- but more often, they spam people on the Internet. First, they claim to have access to "tons" of "prime organic compost" which their family inherited or gained through close association with a corrupt government. Second, they plead for your help moving the compost to a "secure and trusted" location. Then, they offer a 20-50% cut to any "honest friend" who will help. Truth is, there is no such compost. Gardeners who take these hustlers at their word soon find there are "customs fees" and "port clearances" which must be paid. These villains will stop at nothing. They have been known to take the last dime out of the bank accounts of decent gardeners, and still keep asking for more. Don't be a victim. Stick with reputable International Inspectors. None of us will ever demand a fee for certification -- it's against our professional code -- and we all follow established standards, such as the one gallon minimum required for thorough scientific testing. This is incredibly useful - thank you so much everyone!!! Buehl and lastcatx - oohhhhh, yes, setting up mock-up box and taking the colander to a store are perfect ideas. (amazing how obvious something seems _after_ someone kindly points it out to you :) debsan- your watermelon made me laugh! holligator and kidshop - it's so helpful to know that this sink works for you the way we want it to work for us. (I love how people know that serial numbers of these products - me, I can rattle off a whole bunch of faucet numbers now) pirula - Good point - We do have some seriously honkin pots! I hear you on the multi-clean-up and multi-cook wishful thinking. I'm beginning to think, though, that since DH is a fabulous cook, our 2-person kitchen design may be less about me getting to be in the kitchen to help prep/cook, than me getting to be in the kitchen to help keep it clean.... zelmar - good to hear the balance works for you - it's been a real roadblock for us too. judeny - it's relief to hear that someone else finessed the edge of the cabinet - I've been saying "oh, we'll just shave off/cut out the sides of the cabinet," and I've started to worry that I'm just delusional. again - thank you all!!

Thanks for the feedback. I asked our KD/GC to increase both the length of the wall with the cooktop and the island by 9" and add a prep sink, so I think the work area will be 51" long. My idea is to have the prep sink towards the end of the island across from the rangetop. That would make it easy to dump pots of hot water there. The colander we normally use is about 13" across, although we occasionally use a bigger one. Put another way, how much space is recommended for a prep area and how far from the edge can a sink be placed? Our current prep/everything space is 27" long and there are times when it would be nice to have more space. If we keep 30" as a work area and place the sink a few inches from the end, that would leave us enough room for a 16-18" sink. Would that be big enough for typical prep cleaning and dumping pots of water from the cooktop?

if you want to kill anything ... get a container like at the link https://www.google.com/search?q=plochmans+mustard&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=XQTcUYCCC_OFyQGCg4DAAg&biw=1154&bih=805&sei=XwTcUbmZHZK4yAHD0oDYDw remove contents ... rinse.. fill with undiluted RUp .. usually 41% ... snip a plant.. one drip on the cut.. and go at it ... it will kill roots ... every 2 to 4 weeks... recheck area.. resnip.. redrip ... once took me 2 years to kill PIvy ... in this manner.. later found out ... there was a very large underground vine ... as you have found out.. digging isnt really an option.. as you are just slicing and dicing the roots below .... and no matter how retentive you try to be.. it will be back ... works on all kinds of noxious plants.. aka chameleon plant ... etc ... its simply not a spray thing.. and.. best of all.. no drift ... and minimal use ... ken

Your right. I guess we will wait until she calls and then make her wait a day to speak to the kids so we can prep them. I just can't believe any parent can be so detached from their child!
