Giving Too Much?

Hi. My finance is in treatment for alcoholism. He did this all on his own & I am very proud of him. For the past 2.5 mths, I have taken his 5 yr son every Saturday afternoon for the night and we go see "Joe" for a couple hours on Sunday. It is an hour drive each way to visit. I end up having his son for a full 24 hr period each week. (I have 2 children of my own, a bit older.)
I don't have my children this weekend and asked my finance if we would have a solo visit just this once. He hesitated and said he didn't want to go 2 weeks w/o seeing his son.
I understand that part; however, his son is not respectful to me, he has NO boundries from either Dad or mom. I would really like to have the time to myself on Saturday to catch up on all I have put on the back burner. I don't want to deal with the son quite frankly and the 2 hr visit of him needing constant attention.

I think you are doing a very kind and selfless thing for your fiance and his son by providing and arranging their visitation arrangements. However, this is something YOU chose to do, and it is also something that YOU can choose not to do. You have no contract with your fiance binding you to do anything. My advice is- Do what you feel good doing! Yes, your fiance will be disapointed that he will have missed a visitation with his son... and rightfully so, but he will live! Just because you volunteered to do something out of the kindness of your heart doesn't mean that you are obligated to do it every time in the future. Have his child draw him some pictures or write him a note for you to bring to him, and go visit your fiance! It sounds like you have sacrificed alot in order to be supportive of your fiance. Just make sure you are paying attention to what YOU need through this process too! Much luck!

I understand Joe doesn't want to go two weeks without seeing his son, but frankly that is not your problem. It's not your responsibility to transport the child to see his dad. That's something the BM should be doing.

And the boy needs to stay home with his mom if dad can not exercise his visitation with his son because he's out of town in treatment, there is no reason for you to be keeping the child on the weekend.

Think of it this way - what would Joe do if you weren't in the picture?

Chickens will not heat up because of corn. Horses will but not chickens. I make my own rations. We mix several tons of multiple types of feed at a time. I use 50 to 70 percent corn in the rations depending on the age and activity. Straight corn will not hurt mature hens. What you are seeing is probably one of two things. Chickens molt or drop their old worn feathers and replace them with new ones at least 2 times a year. You will see a lot of feathers in the coop at that time especially where they roost. The other problem may be lice. As the cooler weather comes on the lice seem to increase. If it's lice you or other animals can't get them as they are species specific and only live on chickens. You may notice them loosing feathers at the base of the tail. You will see a little of the fluffy downy feathers as opposed to the smooth outer feathers. If that's the case dust them well with Sevin dust as well as the roost rails. If it get bad you may need to change the bedding (we use cedar sawdust from our sawmill as this is a natural pest deterent) You will want to control the lice as they will get worse in the winter and will decrease egg production. Also if the hens loose to many feathers and you have roosters they can injure the hens with their spurs during breeding. And heating the hens up is a helpful thing in the winter especially in Canada. I use hot pepper seed sprinkled (just a little bit on their ration) in the colder months. It keeps them laying and helps with internal parasites. Hope this helps.

I have a dwarf orange tree in the ground in full sun here in AZ and I water it fairly rarely actually, at most once a week, but when I do water it, I just let the hose sit there for a long time and it gets a heck of a lot more than 7 gallons. So far it seems to be doing good. (it's still a baby, very small). The best time to fertilize it would have been about a month ago, but right now is still a good time, so yes I would water it really good, then fertilize it (not any closer than 2 ft from the trunk though) and give it another good soaking, Then I'd leave it alone for a week. Maybe repeat the deep watering after one week. Then you can cut back on water (meaning, still continue to water deeply, but you don't have to overdo it as much). That's just my 2c. And let us consider ourselves lucky that we can have these citrus in the ground. Oh, and some gypsum with sulphur in it would probably do it some good. (the brand I got last time had sulphur in it, which is nice to kill 2 birds with one stone.)

"But large enough to allow 3-4 weeks of growth before reharvesting that section again. " Oh that's a good tip. I think I'll try to go for 2 or maybe 3 little patches. Then I can harvest one and move on to next and see how long it takes to move back to the first. If it is less than 4 weeks, I'll let them get a bit bigger. I think I'll circle flagstone around them to keep them to themselves and plant other herbs and greens on the other side of the flag stones. I do want to have some go to flower for the beneficials, and my harvest schedule may prevent that. I'll have to think on this a little more. Any advice on what plants/herb complement mint in growth for either or an aesthetic way?

You should be able to find one sized for your needs. They have different models, different sizes within the models, and different output levels within each model. You can add a programmable wall monitor to cycle it on/off during the day as needed.

Thank you both! It has become an "expectation" & maybe that is part of my frustration. I will be honest with "Joe" and go from there.

The expectation part would be annoying to me too. But I have to admit I respect your fiance for wanting to see his son, so many men are dead beat dads these days. Good luck to both of you!

Maybe your fiancee doensn't realize the amount of stress you feel keeping the boy for 24 hours.

My advice would be to discuss your feelings with him and see if ya'll can't agree on a compromise about which each of you can be comfortable.

Make it a regular schedule, like taking his son to see him every other week OR three weeks in a row with the fourth week being a time for just you two...no kids. That way you and your fiance have time for adult conversation, as well. Working through business stuff, finance, bills, plans, his treatment progress and just conversing as a loving couple without interruption from the children.
