I have read similar postings here and was pleased at the responses. I hope you folks can give me the same. I am in a serious relationship with a woman who is the love of my life. We would love to get married but there is a HUGE problem - our children. I have a 4 year old daughter who is according to myself, her mother and everyone who meets her, well mannered, respectful and well behaved. On the other hand, my girlfriends 8 year old son is obnoxious, rude, disrespectful, hateful and foul mouthed. He doesnt listen to his mother, myself, his grandparents or anyone else. I have tried to talk to my girlfriend about him only to be met with criticism and anger. She defends all of her sons actions whether they are good or bad. What bothers me most is his treatment of my daughter. When asked if she would tolerate her son being treated in a similar manner she said that she would not. Still, she does nothing to correct the behavior. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You may not like my advice, but I'd be thinking very seriously about your relationship. You said "I have tried to talk to my girlfriend about him only to be met with criticism and anger. I haven't been married all that long, so I am not an authority on marriage, but I do know that if my husband and I were not able to talk things through we wouldn't have lasted two months. If your GF is just dismissing your concerns without even considering them, IMO that does not bode well for your future.

Bad behavior of a child is something that a family can deal with, if the adults are united. If Mom doesn't even see it as a concern, SF is not going to be able to change it on his own, period. You owe it to your daughter to not stick her into the middle of this.

You did what you supposed to do. You have concerns about your daughter safety and his behavior is out of control. One day that 8 yrs old is going to a teenager and if she doesn't do something about it now there's going to be a bigger problems. You have a responsibility to protect your daughter and if you have to end the relationship to do that, Oh well!!

Well it is a small container but it can be done - preferably without the competition from the basil. But mostly anaheims are slow to kick into gear (by as much as 6 weeks) and much less tolerant of any stress. And yours is definitely stressed by all that high nitrogen fertilizer. ;) Excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers is the number 1 cause of blossom drop. Cut back on the fertilizer - use it at a diluted strength when you do - transplant the basil out of the container, don't over water it and let it dry out between watering. It should thrive in your climate once you cut it some slack. ;) Dave.

Wow thanks everyone IÂm by thrilled how many nice people want to help fellow gardeners. Anyway great ideas and wish I could use them all but here is what I did today: Yesterday I sent out a bag of soil to MA extension for testing. Today I tilled and dug two additional holes one about 2x5 the other 3x3 and placed the landscape fabric on the bottom and sides. While re-filling I added a few handfuls of oak leaves. For top dressing I may have went overboard as I added 4-8" of finely chopped leaves mixed with some pine needles, a thin coat of last years weathered straw, and finally another inch of shredded leaves. Will this cause any transplanting difficulty? Here is a picture of "some" of the roots removed from the 3x3 hole dug. This area is closest the side of the garden and has the maximum roots, while not the whole area has this many roots you can see what IÂm up against. That will be all the digging IÂll do this year but I will till the remainder of the garden and wait for the soil test results. IÂll do a mixture of veggies and annual flowers and see how each section fairs. From Patty: In my experience tomatoes will do great in an area for a few years and then do worse, and worse, and worse. While I have a fair amount of space crop rotation is not something I can entertain as 75% of my veggies are tomatoes, just not enough room. From Okl: Have you thought of a chemical barrier along the outside of your bed? No what is that. From Bill: I hate to see you give up and chunk the towel in Rich The thought of not growing any home grown tomatoes is to traumatic to envision, Rich. ":^) Great ideas on your post Bill, but this is all of this years effort outside of what the soil test recommends. And even if I eventually throw in the towel in this garden I about 400 square feet of backyard gardens space, so no tomato drought, and IÂm getting into self watering containers for more. Twas a busy day as I started a good sized lasagna garden in a partially shaded area, but that's for another post.

I've been building up a sandy soil here for 3 years and still have to water twice a day during the hottest, driest months to make anything grow. Most veggies I now start in pots in a shady area and transplant them in the garden when they are hardy enough. As far as selling vegetable transplants grown in pots, I find greens (unusual such as mizuna, red mustard, swiss chard, arugula) can be seeded outside in pots in Sept-Oct for sale in the fall market. As far as tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers, I seed these inside about New Year's Day to be ready for planting in early March. One other techinique I use is...just plant some seeds every week...who knows water the weather will be and some will take...goood luck...deb

I very much second Pickle's cart option. This makes a mini-island that doesn't trap you into difficult walk paths. The space I'm working with is close to the dimensions of yours and like you, heard from "everyone" that an island was needed, but after a number of drawings, I gave it up. I have created something else by turning the kitchen sideways, but have informed DH that there is the possibility that a cart still may show up. If my windows did not dictate so many other things, I would have made a cart garage under the countertop. I visited Ikea recently and was surprised to see all the cart options in the showroom. Large and small, wheeled or not, metal or wood. Lots of utility in them. Not advocating Ikea here, just the idea. My daughter has a little cart in her microkitchen in Fairbanks AK where it is invaluable. She can roll it out of the way when space is needed but otherwise, it's at her side when she needs an additional "plunk space" or cutting surface. Knives are in the drawer and most-used bowls, etc. are on it. A friend saw her cart and fell in love, went home to Minn. and created a one-wall kitchen with a modest cart as auxiliary space. It makes his wall a two-cook kitchen and is a transition between the table area and the wall kitchen. During the meal, things are plunked on it heading one way or the other; after the meal cleanup occurs via the cart surface. I don't think it moves around very much except when a specific cooking task requires it, but I know that wheels were important to him. When there is a big crowd or a project where it's in the way, many carts can go away, outside even. One of the mound of books I scoured for ideas during the planning stage featured the kitchen of a professional recipe writer. It had cupboards that were a little deeper on the two facing walls and there was a cart. I suspect that the cart was the stuff she needed on either of the two walls and that the top surface was that extra space needed in the heat of battle, in her case for dough often. Wanted to add a few other things to make the picture a little more vivid. My GF told me in the beginning and still to this day not to try and compete with her son as he will always be number one. He is the most spoiled young man i have ever met and knows that he has his mother wrapped around his little finger. At 8 years old, all he has to do is whine and he gets his way.

Unfortunately I agree that the relationship with "the love of your life" may be doomed. The only possible hope might be serious family counseling, but you and your GF must first sort out whether you have the same styles of parenting. If not....welll....I'd think very long and hard about a future with her and her son.

she sounds like a parent who never sees anything wrong in their children. it sounds like 8-year-old is difficult and she refuses to acknowledge it. I think counseling might help. I agree with glaze.

It is time to give up. If she lets an 8 year old run her life then you need to get out now!!! That 8 year old will be a teenager running the home and then an adult still running your lives. I have seen it in my own family and its awful!

I am not saying that our children should not be our first priority because they should come before anyone or anything else. With that said there are certain lines in a parent/child relationship and I feel when a parent lets their child do whatever they want and gives them no boundries they are not putting their child first. Instead they are filling their own need to be "liked" by their child. As a parent I think it is our job to teach our children how to behave and teach them right from wrong, not worry about if the child might be mad at you for putting your foot down.

You mention that she mistreats your child, that alone should be enough reason to end the relationship!
