Stepfamily Siminar - Ever been or heard of one?

My DH heard on the radio about a stepfamily conference that he is interested in us going to. I would like to know if anyone here has ever been to something like this. If so, did you get some good info and tools from it?

I've taken active parenting for stepfamilies. The Marriage seminar is going to be near here later this year... I may check it out.

You should totally go!!!!! I've never been to one, but I've read the books and they helped me tremendously!

Update on 3 of my chrysalises! 3 eclosed yesterday after approx 4 weeks - amazing experience and so beautiful! Sad news though that one fell from the spot it was holding onto (it was a little windy) right after eclosing. It was crawling in the soil so I put a stick down and it climbed up and I hung it from a nearby plant with a clothespin. The wings plumped up for awhile but never fully finished. I found it this morning dead. So very sad that it made it thru almost to the end to die. Butterfly raising, although so exciting, can be stressful. I understand why people raise them indoors and then release them!

I can completely understand your frustration. Rodents are territorial and you kill one (or some) the new guys will just move in to take over. For some unknown reasons our front yard is now rodent free. I managed to trap a pair at a time and after the last pair I refilled the holes then plugged them will rocks. I returned to inspect the area and checked for new holes and tracks periodically. It's been two years and I've found none. The pocket gopher that drove me crazy was a loner. I trapped and killed it and the rest of the season we're gopher free. I know a new guy will come in to take over the place so I stopped planting anything for two years. I hope by leaving the place deserted will drive the rest of them looking resident somewhere else and eventually there's no more gopher scent to attract them back. If they do return I have two black boxes to take care of them. I still have one more rodent headache, the biggest yet, to deal with - the backyard gang. We have a large composter in our backyard (just a fence away from the back land) and I used to trap them and got one or two a day. The dead bodies got smaller in size each day indicating the young ones had to come out to look for food. Activities would stop for a while then the whole cycle started over again with large mice then the small ones trapped near the composter. I know as long as the food is there they will never stop yet I don't have a solution.

Yes Kristi! I would strongly recommend it. I will tell you how I found this place. It was about 5 years ago. I wanted a banana tree in the worst way. I was coming back to my house with roomate, and he said look! There's a banana tree! I did a u turn on a busy street and flew into that driveway and walked out with my banana tree! That was it, I was hooked to that place. I ave bought my vanilla orchid there, a navel orange tree that didn't make it due to cold temps when our aparment was being remodeled. I got my first mango tree there, it was a Southern Blush. That tree was over 6 feet and I paid $25.00! I also got my giant gardenia tree there. That was also over 6 feet and about 5 feet wide. Now, I can call them up and request any tree I want. I can't wait for January so I can get my red navel orange tree. Jim (the owner)had a tangerine...huge for $75.00. He offered it to me for $50.00 and it had about 7-8 almost mature fruit! I passed on it. I was very tempted but was'nt going to buy it just to buy it. I only have limited space for maybe 2 more trees. I strongly advise calling. If they sell any kind of tropical fruit, chances are you could get another tropical fruit. Good luck!! Andrew

"I recently was hired to buy food from Sam's Club and bring it to a local Adult Ed program..." On whose credit card went the food from Sam's? If it went on yours and you paid for it, and presumably reimbursed for it of course, seems to me you are in control of it. If they gave you the money ahead of time to pay for the food (or a credit card, gift card or something similar), then it seems that it's their food and you're services are to pickup, deliver, setup and cleanup and if they get food poisoning from mishandling, it's their problem. The contract seems pretty clear and you did what you contracted to do. I don't think a bridge is necessarily burnt and as said if it is, then you don't want anything more to do with them anyway. There are certain groups of people with whom I don't care to work. My only other suggestion is to always get it in writing, have them put their desires in writing. Maybe if you're going to do this more often, put together an info sheet or questionnaire asking things like how long/what hours do you want me there? What to do with leftovers? If client is to keep them do they have proper food handling conditions? I'd also write into the contract that they're responsible for any mishandling, and specify food poisoning in there to get their attention. A little info on these topics could be very helpful in clearing up confusion. Maybe if they understood why you're apprehensive about leaving food out that long they wouldn't be upset. When I was a wedding photographer, I learned early on to have a contract, even with friends. I wrote into it that in the event of interference I could walk out and all sums are due immediately, that they had to specify people they wanted photographed and more. The one time it saved me a lot of hassles and money. The bride's mother threatened to sue because I didn't photograph a long-lost uncle who suddenly appeared. I knew nothing of him or certainly would have. But having the contract, between the bride, groom and myself eliminated the mother's ability to interfere. Have it in writing. Formal contracts aren't always required as long as the understanding is in writing and agreed by the parties. Handle it in a businesslike manner and you're going to be better off in the long run. Sounds to me like they wanted to deal with you on the "good buddy" system and you wanted to be professional. I think you made the right choice and if they're mad, let them be mad.

We are going. It starts tomorrow evening and ends Saturday afternoon.I will update after we get done.

I am excited about getting some good information. I have been doing somme research on him. He is known for his mistry to stepfamilies.

The siminar was great. We learned so much. I highly recommend it for anyone who is in a stepfamily. He also is a marriage therapist so he had alot of good tools for our marriage and the blending of our stepfamily. We met other couples, we did different exercises that help get more of an understanding of where the kids position and feelings are. Really wonderful speaker, he is a christian councilor so he referneces the old testiment.
My DH had been pushing me to get on to his kids when they are being mouthy towards me or not picking up their trash like I ask and to be affectionate towards them. I was against it and he thought that I was giving up that I did not want anything to do with them. I tried and tried to tell him I was not comfortable doing those things and I was sure the kids wouldnt be. At the siminar the guy told us exactly what I had been telling my DH. Its his place to do that not mine. So he is not going to presure me anymore about those things. That had been a big disagreement with us for a while. I am so happy that was resolved.
It really helped us to understand our feelings, the kids feeling, their mothers feelings. I bought The Smart Stepmom book, and The Smart Stepfamily book that he wrote.

Awesome!!!!! I'm going to see if they are coming to my town!

I read The Smart Stepfamily about 2 years after my divorce. Two things that really hit home with me were:

1) Stepfamilies aren't "blended". "Blending" insinuates that each individual goes in whole, but then loses their own identity and becomes a completely different substance. (I think of smoothies; the berries and yogurt and such goes in and comes out unrecognizable). Stepfamilies are more like salads. Each individual goes in whole, but after they are tossed and mixed around, the flavors combine to form a whole new substance, but with each ingredient maintaining it's properties. For instance, in a chef salad, the meat and eggs and lettuce and dressing all go into it, but a person could still pick out each individual ingredient.

2) In a divorce, a person must give up all ties to a marriage. Not just the good feelings, but the anger, bitterness, hurt, betrayal feelings, too.

There are a lot of people who feel entitled to hang on to the negative feelings. This really helped me be a better co-parent with X. I was no longer angry and hurt and betrayed because I wanted to release all the marital bonds so I could move forward with my new relationship.
