Boxie, Funny you should say that...my kitchen guy says my kitchen is cursed- and so he doesn't feel quite so bad about all the granite problems... Started with OTR MW that took almost exactly a year dealing with the store I bought it from before it could be installed- first it didn't work (had it stored in garage for several months before I tried it on a whim)- long long story on how it took forever to get serviced- got fixed and when we were going to install realized there weren't any brackets- that took months and sooo many emails and phone calls to get satisfaction- then parts were on back order... Then new windows that were also ordered May 08, 2007, didn't all finally get installed until November! We went the whole summer with plastic sheeting for my kitchen windows! Just phoned Electrolux today to inquire as to where my replacement grates for our brand new gas stove are (been waiting since January)- enamel is chipping off...supposedly on truck from Quebec to Ontario, and they should be Purolated here in BC either this week or next... Just got a bill in the mail yesterday from roofing company that came three times to fix leak- over $1000 later to tell us chimney is causing the problem, so I have a lovely blue tarp over my chimney and leak still not fixed! Arghhh! Oh, you wanted to know the name of the granite? Butterfly Blue- it's actually quite pretty- we prefer the colouring of batch #2. They're calling the newer rock Butterfly Blue New.

That's great, Doodle. So glad she took it well and is going to go. Continue to offer her some words of encouragement here and there along the way... I'm not a religious person myself, but I think there's an awful lot to be said for a sense of FAITH in general in reaching goals. Or HOPE, as the place is named... it empowers a person to try and reach for better things. It's great when people find the strength they need, and believe that they actually CAN, and go on to make positive changes. If that's helped because they believe in God or Mr. Peanut, so be it, and more power to 'em!

I'd like to think you could find someone to do that for $300 - $400 assuming the build contract isn't 40 pages. In the middle of a build (-ish) - you are REALLY SMART to do this. Contracts are NEVER written to protect you since the developer is drafting them. Give them the instructions that weedyacres said above and then consider sending back some redlines. While this is rather emotional for you - it's also a huge investment and likely the single largest business transaction you will ever make (although my husband says that's our marriage, but I digress). AND - it's TOTALLY a business transaction for the builder. Coming at it from a more legal / protective standpoint can only give you peace of mind and might even save you thousands in the future. GREAT IDEA - DO IT. It's MUCH easier to "negotiate" any of those terms now...

If you are using a contract written by a builder or a design-builder you will be at a disadvantage and a lawyer is essential. But, if you are bidding the project and can include a contract form in the bid documents and you don't have an architect to help with the contract, It can be difficult to find a lawyer familiar with single family construction contracts and hiring a lawyer to write one can be unnecessarily expensive and he/she is likely to follow the AIA format anyway so I recommend printing an AIA "sample" form, filling it out and taking it to a lawyer. If he/she doesn't have a subscription to the AIA forms you can buy an editable copy for $100. If you are not using an architect, you you can cross out, delete or modify any reference to an architect.
