More Weird Gifts

Some of you may remember my post of last October concerning the bouquet of flowers SS received from his BM for his 16th birthday -- I thought it was weird.

So moving on to Christmas. Guess what she gives him as a gift. Gift Certificates from her that say things like:

"This entitles you to ask me for a hug anytime you want one"

"This entitles you to ask me to come visit you in ____________ (our city)"

"This entitles you to ask me to bring you to _____________ (her city)"

Now, I know it's the thought that counts, and I also understand the sentiment of these "gifts", but heck shouldn't he expect those things from her without having to have a damn certificate for it? And has she forgotten that he's 16? Honestly, am I being too critical? Isn't this a very childish thing to give a teenage boy? I don't know anymore, maybe it's me!

Yes, of course he should expect to have those things as a part of day-to-day life.

Maybe she's broke & clueless?

I've seen "coupons" like that, but for "extra" services;
an old boyfriend once gave me a card with a coupon in it that said he would change the oil & wash & wax the car.

If I were going to give a coupon to a teen-aged boy, I'd make it for taking him & 3 of his friends to (fill in the blank).

It just sounds like she's clueless;

Ditto Sylvia. I used to make my mom things like that for Mother's Day.

I agree, the woman is probably broke and, yeah, I guess it's the thought that counts---but I agree with Sylvia again that a better option would have been:

Gift certificate for you and three of your friends to order pizza and go see a movie.

Or whatever.

A hug anytime he likes??? A) he should get that anytime and B) not exaclty up a 16 year old boy's alley, huh?

Yup, that's corn smut, called Huitalacoche (or something along those lines) in Mexico. And,it's absolutley delicious. Fry it up in some olive oil, shred, and put into a pasta sauce. Or, flour and sautee in butter and just eat it. In Mexico, its often used as the filling in tacos, etc., from what I've read. The local "gourmet" market here sells it in the summer for $19.99 a lb. That's why I decided to try eating it, and it is really good -- you can taste corn and mushroom flavors in it. The stage you show in the photo is about optimal for use -- if they get older, they get too mushy. When cooked, it will be jet black (except for brown crust if you use flour to coat). Don't waste it, eat it!

I like the idea of a Anthro gift card included with all the other goodies as the “top off.” She obviously likes Anthro and will no doubt find things to purchase after the wedding....perhaps even items she did not receive from her registry. Plus, it’s “once and done” for you and easier for her to keep track of who sent what, instead of receiving gifts at different times from the same person.

Maybe not for your cousin, but I bought a gift for DH that he loves and uses all the time and wanted to share it, so I'll share it here. It's called the incredible spill not. It's a cup or mug carrier scientifically designed to work with centrifugal forces so you can't spill the contents no matter how fast it starts swinging around. No more soggy crackers as when he carried the mug on his plate, and no more drips across the floor as he walked out to the deck with his cup of tea. I am a programmer..... not for Houzz... but some of the issues that programmers have to deal with is different operating systems and environments.... for example the real estate to view the screen on computer screens can be 10 inches to 60 inches (though only few people have 60)..... but office management normally give their programmers large monitors to work on the programmer (newbies.... and sometimes oldies) forget to test on different monitors.... what appears really well on a 60 inch monitor or a 32 certainly isn't going to work well on a 15 inch..... Then you have tiny cell phone screens... they behave in a WHOLE different way... the cell phone is use to expanding the data on the screen.... that doesn't transcend well to fixed size monitors... There really needs to be two different portals for the interface to work... and different approaches, but many who look at a site from both cell and computer want them to work the same... then when it seems to be going well someone like MS updates their operating system..... and of course things break.... then of course you have people putting in their ideas... like someone thought it might be nice to have the latest post at the top... but if you go into the same thread to see new post.... you still have to scroll down the thread to find the last post you read.... come back to the top of that said post and read down threw that post to the end.... scroll back to the top of the next post and read down and then back up... makes it cumbersome .... the premise was great.... but the execution not so great.... I am just glad that someone is working on fixes..... because it is important to me to read others comments... I now have ROSE friend even though I have never met most... I still feel connected

While I agree, it's the thought that counts, I have to wonder just how much thought this BM put into her 'gift'.

Just a couple months ago when SS called to spend the evening/night with his mother she blew him off with 'she was busy'. Might be hard on the SS when he goes to actually use coupon #3 and he gets 'sorry, I'm busy' and 'oh, not this week'. How many times will she disappoint the SS before he really gets to spend his coupons?

Blah... People never cease to amaze me. I gave coupons to my hubby for v-day and now it's a game DD likes to play, she sticks 'coupons' in my purse or on my winshield. Lol she is 9!! She loves the coupon game!

I think she is clueless... Nothing to do with broke unless that is her story... But a nice card without the coupons would have been the better 'thought that counts' gift...

Lol!!! Is it different than my mom sending my brother underwear and white undershirts for christmas!? Lol my sister in law almost DIED!! I love my mom but she can be clueless - that is for sure!! My sister got panties this yr... And my mom said 'what!?!' she asked me to take her shopping for some and so I thought I would just wrap them. Lol!!

Thanks ladies, for reassuring me that I'm not the nutty one here! LOL.

BM is not broke, just cheap -- she is an executive with a six figure salary. And, I agree, that the coupon thing is a great idea if used in an age appropriate way. The movie and pizza with friends would have been a great idea. Unfortunately, BM relates to SS as his friend, not as his mother. She would include herself in that pizza and movie party, which would be embarrassing for SS.

I read it as her way of being creative when she doesnt have any $ to buy gifts. Problem is, its sort of weird coming from the parent. I remember giving my father "gift certificates" from me that entitled him to me washing his car, mowing the lawn, etc.

Those "certificates" should be expected anyway. She's adding a value to something that should be the norm, which isnt the right message to her child.

"And has she forgotten that he's 16?" Doesn't that seem to so often be one of the common denominators with some of these women? BM did get SS one present this year - a toy that is suitable for ages three and up. SS is eight. It's just completely inappropriate for him and, as usual, will sit collecting dust until the next "donate your old toys" cleanup in SS's room.

LadyQ, I don't think it's you. There are a lot of fun things you can give a teenager that don't cost much money - a DVD, bag of microwave popcorn and some candy for a "movie night", for example. Or a trip to the museum, or an art gallery, or a driving trip to an away game for one of his high school teams; whatever he is interested in. But a coupon for a "hug"? Yup, that's something that children give their parents, not vice versa.

It seems like these coupons are more for her than him. She is hoping that he will hug her or want to spend time with her. LOL

haha, I like how it says "this entitles you to ASK ME"... not that he'll even get what he's asking for.

Why didn't I think of doing this for MY kids???
