Give me honest answer

How does everyone feel about adult sk being in their homw when they are away? this is a sk that has done some dishonest things - like take things from the home and not return them. let me know how others feel. this sk has his own home and job.

SD stayed in our home when we were away. She also takes our things, especially mine. I don't think she steals per se but rather has no boundaries and no concept of privacy.

I hide things when she visits and directly confront her when I know she touched my stuff, it helps somewhat.

Anyone who's a known "borrower", doesn't get to stay in my house unsupervised, whatever their relationship. I would not let my own child stay under those circumstances.

Asrar: Your question does not have an easy answer. First, MOST citrus do grow 'true' from seed. By true, I mean they are essentially 'clones' of the parent plant. Most lemons do, grapefruits, oranges, mandarins do. But some DO NOT...such as Meyer lemon, pummelos, Minneola tangelo, Temple oranges, Clementine mandarins, and a few others. Don't quote me on which ones. You can do a search in this forum and find out. Malcolm Manners gave a list here once. Second point: Seedlings of many citrus have a very long juvenile period -- for example grapefruits require up to 10 to 14 years before they eventually put out the 'mature' wood that is capable of blooming and bearing fruit. By this time plants must get quite large (maybe over 14 feet high). Key limes, calamondins, and perhaps kumquats take much less time - perhaps 3 to 5 years from seed. Of course all this depends also on the growing conditions. Optimally, in the ground in Florida with great year-round weather - they take fewer years to bear. In a pot in the cold Northern US, they can take many more years - or maybe never. Also, many oranges and lemons for example are extremely thorny from seed. I mean we're talking 3-inch or longer thorns! Only the older mature growth tends to have shorter thorns. Because of this 'juvenility' problem (as well as root disease issues), many citrus (scions from mature wood) are grafted onto a hardy rootstock. This imparts not only a bit of hardiness but also disease resistance to the scion, and assures that you will get fruit in just a few years (vs the many, many years from seed). It also assures that the exact variety will be propagated in the cases where that particular variety won't grow true from seed. I know a few people too who have dentures and didn't got to that many visits! My mom has some... been years!! My dad, however, cannot wear dentures because his upper palate is not shaped properly. I think it's because his upper palate is too flat, which wouldn't allow proper "suction" of the denture or something like that. (I'd have to ask him to verify.)

Here are my thoughts based on my experience: 1. How do you look for hvac contractor? Yellow page, internet, friends, families? >A combination of asking friends and searching for factory authorized dealers listed on specific brand web sites. 2. What do you think first when choosing a new hvac system. The brand name or the contractor? what brand do you like the most? >The focus is usually brand name first since most people don't know who is a good contractor. Carrier and Trane get the most name brand recoginiton. 3. When getting bid, do you prefer talking to a saleman or a contractor? And can you tell if he's a saleman or contractor? >I want to talk to someone who know more about the equipment and installation than I do. I am turned off if the salesman does not know his product. A salesman wants to talk about price quickly, a contractor is interested in putting together a system which best suits the customer's needs. 4. What made you decide to choose that contractor? is it because he give you alot of information, about how new system will be install, the warranties, the prices. >The contractor I chose did all the measurements for thorough Manual J calculation during his first visit. On the second visit he showed me the calculation and spreadsheets of several combinations of furnaces and condensers which were sized for my home. The spreadsheets had model numbers, prices, and the available local and federal rebates. The contractor is a small family run business and a Carrier factory authorized dealer. 5. What do you expect out of an hvac contractor when they are giving you the bid? Another words,what made you decide to not choose the contractor? >I did not choose two contractors who did not want to do a Manual J calculation. Thanks rhome410 for your input. Depending on how much my cabinets price out to, I may need to do just that! I forgot to mention that I would be using the newly acquired counterspace for my coffepot and toaster. The theory being that a second person could come into the kitchen and get breakfast without interfering with my primary work zone which would be the counter to the right of the rangetop. It would also double as a landing zone for the fridge. If I kept the doorway where it is, do you think it would be too far away to put the coffee/toaster in the closest tall cabinet beside the banquette? I plan on putting my Vitamix left of the sink and my stand mixer to the right of the sink in the corner. I really want to keep my countertops free and clear since I am losing countertop square footage. If I keep the garage entry door, one option I thought of would be to wrap the uppers and lowers with the countertop around the corner towards the patio door. I currently am planning on a 15" deep pantry but am not opposed to just wrapping the uppers and lowers so I have a bit of extra countertop. I can only go 15" deep, so it may be weird to have 15" deep base and 12" wall cabinets. I guess I could use 9" deep uppers. Would it be weird to have the coffepot/toaster station all the way over there? The second option I thought of would be to have a range instead of a wall oven, thereby allowing me to keep the existing doorway, and have counter top to the right of the fridge. I would just have to find another space for my pots and pans, which are currently under the rangetop. I really do love having them separate but this is not my dream kitchen, just the one I'll be in for probably the next 10 years, raising my children. Aargh! So many trade offs, I know. Once I mess with one area, another problem pops up in a different area.

I agree with Colleen. I once came home & my son that didn't live there was inside watching TV... fine, except he brought friends over that I didn't know. I don't like having strangers in my house so that was a boundary violation for me. If any of the kids... mine or not, were borrowers~ they can only be there when we are home. If they don't respect your home & things, they don't need to be there unsupervised.

Why would there be a reason for the sk to be in your home when there is no one else there?

In my case my ss rummaged through my room and my jewlery was found in his possesion.

Speaking for myself, after my experience I would never allow that to happen again.

In our case SD had to stay in our area while we were gone. BM lives in our area as well, in fact in a walking distance nd logically SD would stay with her, but.... But both SDs refuse to stay at moms (BM and her BF are heavy drinkers, their house is very filthy, and appliances usually do not work or don't work well, BM starts fights etc), so it was either hotel or our house. SO can't say "no" to his kids...

thanks for all the honest responses. wishitwaseasy the reason ss wants to stay in our home is to bring a friend and play with our things such as boat, rtv, dirt bike, snowmobile etc. then wants to come in and use our facility like bar, kitchen, bathroom and whatever he wants. dh cannot say no and thinks it is fine.

There are very few people whom I would happily allow to stay in my home while we were not here. Most importantly they do not snoop and they respect others' privacy; if they did stumble across something personal (they were bleeding profusely and started rummaging through bathroom drawers to find a bandage), they would never mention what they had seen. They treat our possessions and home as if it were theirs - they clean up and take reasonable care if using something of ours. If something were to accidentally be damaged, they'd offer to pay to replace it, be it a boat or a fork that they accidentally stuck in the garbage disposal. We'd probably say no, of course, certainly to the fork, and certainly if were something really expensive that insurance would cover - but they'd have made the offer.

Someone who "borrowed" something and never returned it? Honestly, I'd be unhappy about such a person spending the night here even if I were home! I'd have everything that was meaningful and valuable to me (heirlooms and such, regardless of actual cost) put completely away somewhere. As for someone who "borrows" staying when we weren't here, it would get seriously ugly if DH were agreeing with that.

The toughest call, I think, is if one has an honest but ditzy relative who really wanted to stay - if the relative could be trusted but their friends, not necessarily so. It would be really awkward to say that you don't trust someone's friends - but I'd feel awkward before I'd allow my stuff to disappear!

Not only no but hell, no. SD used our home for sexual rendevous, not to mention stealing things from us and causing property damage. No way I'd let her stay there unsupervised.
