Well, I worked as a teenager - somewhere between 8 and 20 hours a week, 12 hours was an average week. And 18 hours a week is a LOT for a teenager in school.
IME, all people (kids, teens, adults) need one day a week off, but if she's working 18 hours per weekend, she's not getting that. Where is her time for friends, homework, sleeping in, doing chores, having a hobby, watching TV, and so on?

So, yes, her performance in school was unacceptable, and there should be some consequences. But, I can't say that I can fault her TOO much for falling grades working that much.
(I probably would have only been working 4-12 hours a week if my mom hadn't been too sick to work and my parents could have afforded for me to not be nearly supporting myself)

It has been my experience with my DS16 that his social life is more to blame for lower grades than his job is. In his school the students have to stay after school for an extra period if they have a late assignment. I have also asked his teachers to contact me twice a week and up date me on any problems he is having. He is dyslexic but I don't want him using that as an excuse. He has a high IQ so he is capable, a lot of times, of doing better. I just have to keep on his behind.

I do not believe in just letting a child get whatever grade they get and have them suffer the consequences. I would want SD to be learning all that she could at school and that includes being responsible for meeting dead lines with assignments. I know you need DH to work on that with her and it sounds if maybe he won't care to.

My son has to work if he wants to drive. He pays for his own gas and his insurance. I give him gas money for school. He has learned a lot by having a job so even though he struggles in school, working has been good for him. Besides, if he weren't working he wouldn't be spending that time on studies. I know my son. I just have to keep on him.

I watch my SD10's grades as well. She is normally a straight A and A+ student. When I see a subject drop to a B I talk to her about why she thinks it happened. Sometimes she will say that it is new to her and she is just catching on. Other times she will tell me that she has not put in the effort that she should have. She cares about her grades and is very competitive. My DS16 is not and never has been. He has different issues to deal with so I expect different things from him. SD10 has a breeze with school. Her teacher lets us know when her projects are due. We have a web site to visit for both kids to check homework and pending assignment dates. Currently they are both in the same school.

I wasn't allowed to work in highschool. I babysat sometimes on the weekends but I was never allowed to have a real job. I didn't really know anyone who had a job, either. We went to an extremely competitive academic highschool and were also required to play 2 out of 3 sports seasons. So that meant, in addition to the normal school day, 2 out of 3 seasons we had to stay for practice from 3:15-5:15 pm. That didn't leave a lot of time for a job. I had an average of 2 hours of homework a night.

My parents always told me that school WAS my job and doing my best was part of that job. (For a few summers, I did volunteer work at a children's hospital.) I got my first paying job the summer after graduation at Starbucks.

I think if a child is getting poor grades he/she is obviously a)not trying or b) not understanding the material. Either way, it's clear that more time needs to be spent on studies and less on "extracurricular" activities.

In this case, I agree, the job should be the first to go. At this age, having a job is a privilege and if the grades are suffering, the loss of that privilege would seem appropriate to me.

I had no choice but to work. Had no mother, father worked but gave me nothing as far as cahs was concerned. I had to beg at 13 so i can have money enough to buy a bra.
So i would work 20-25 hrs a week and go to school. I was still a straight A student even with all those hrs. I worked friday night 5 -12, Saturdays from 6am to 4 pm and sunday's 6am to 2 pm...those were my regular shifts and if someone didnt show for the 4pm shift i would stay till 10pm to cover.
My grades never plundered and when exam time came i did sacrifice a day. Like sunday for study crunch time.
She's a young studnet, full of energy like the energizer bunny. SHE is slacking. Its not the jobs fault. Its her.
If the job is important to her, i would have her father tell her to pull up the grades. If not the following semester since she will repeat it, she's has to give up the job.
SHe's either slacking or needs more time cause sh'e not understanding.
She can also cut her hours like i did. If i needed more time i cut a day off. Part time work is flexible and if she is having a hard time with a subject then she needs to devote more time. If she can't find time during the week then one day gets cut off from work on the weekend.

If that was the rule that was set up then he should follow through. Yes, basically what she did was kiss up at the last minute and pull off (imo) still crappy grades. I worked from the moment I was legally allowed. I had to. When I was growing up we were poor. By the time my siblings were growing up my parents were much more financially well off but in my years if I wanted clothes for school, field trips, out with my friends etc etc... I worked. I also paid for my own insurance (a rule for me to be able to drive) and a cell phone. I worked five days a week for about five - six hours a day. My senior year of high school I worked two jobs because I was saving up to move out and start college. This was all in addition to several extra curricular activities. (looking back it all seems so much but it really wasnt that hard) My grades were always the most important thing to my parents though. They were in the midst of struggling... my dad never graduated high school. And although he has worked very hard to make a really good life for himself and his family there were many years of hardship. They wanted better for their kids. They made it clear that NOTHING... no job no extra activity no friend was more important the school. That was my number one priority. So, because I wanted to be able to work so I could afford the things I wanted and help out my family... I made darn sure I got my studies in as well. I picked an easy job that allowed me to do homework at the cash register if I needed to... and then in my senior year my second job allowed for the same thing doing homework and studying while working. It is doable if you choose to. Right now she is not choosing to. Education is the key to the world... it is not fair to her to allow her to flit by on terrible grades... harming whatever long term goals she may have.

Well, sd is the one who wanted to only work on the weekends. She works Saturday and Sunday from 8-4. So I guess she only gets like 14 hours a week. She said she didn't want to work during the week.
What she has been doing is reading books like they are drugs. She didn't know when to put them down.
She was reading them in school during classes, which of course accounts for the poor grades.
She wasn't bringing homework home because she told her dad that either she didn't have any or that she finished it in school. (I always called bs, but no one listens to me until its too late)
IF she wasn't reading she would just want to Veg out on t.v.
We already limited the television, but when we are off running errands etc, she would jump to watch tv.
When we limited tv time, then she did the same with the books. I mean it was so bad, that she wouldn't even finish a chore without running downstairs to hide out in her bathroom and read for 30 minutes, claiming she was going to the bathroom.
When she did bring "homework" home she would spend like 5 mintues with the book open or whatever then be done.
She didn't turn in a lot of work, or what she did turn in was just failing or close to it. Same with tests.
As for time with friends etc.....she doesn't have any friends. At least not the we have ever seen.
She claims she has tons of friends. But no one calls her and she doesn't call anyone. She doesn't go anywhere with anyone. She freaked out when her dad told her that he wanted to meet a new friend at least once a week. I have never known a child to make a big deal out of being told to have a friend come over. But she did lol.
My son has his buddies over at least once a week and on weekends or he is at their houses, same with my 6 year old dd. But not sd, she just goes to school and work and stays home. She is strange. I keep telling dh that it isn't "normal" for a teenage girl. But she insists she has tons of friends.
I think she is still friends with the little gang bangers around here and that is why she doesn't hang out with anyone or call, because her dad will not let her hang out with them. period. But she says "no, I'm not friends with them anymore".

lol...she told us last week when she was pissed at us that she likes to go to work cuz she gets to get away from us. LOL!! My thought was, well if you had any friends you wouldn't have to freakin' worry about it!

The gangs are a problem here, and I seriously think that is who she hangs out with. She knows her dad won't let her do anything with them, and that we always want to meet whoever she is going to be with or whatever, but she has been this way since she started high school. The no friends thing started last year at the start of her freshman year when she started hanging out with the gang kids, (her cousin went to school there for a short while when she started and she got her involved with them but she dropped out like half way into the year). Her dad told her that she was not going to be friends with those kids and to find some new friends to hang out with. Obviously never happened.

No clue what to do.
But her dad did go talk to her guidance counselor and she is to bring home a slip each week that each of her teachers has to sign and comment on her progress for that week etc. She already didn't do it last week. @@ I'm not surprised. But I am the jaded one in our situation.
Lets put it this way....if we spent the time it would take to tend to ALL of sd's issues we would never have any free time and none of the other kids would get any time with us. Well, I don't spend all my time on her but as for dh, he spends a good amount of it trying to talk with her etc.
So we try to pick which issues to focus on and put other ones on backburners or try to watch them. The school graded were a bit of a shock because she kept telling her dad that she was doing fine in her classes, and said she didn't even know she was flunking three classes. Again...I called BS.
The thing is, sd has such an "innocent" look about her that all she has to do is shed a few tears and she generally gets a lot of people to feel sorry for her. Easier to do than actually be responsible for her own behaviors and actions.
