Breaking glass flowers

Here's how I do it.

Step 1: score flower stem approx 1/4" from flower.

Step 2:

Now, find a hard surface with a straight edge. In this photo I used the edge of a stone, but you could use a brick or perhaps a table edge would do.

Line up your score line with the edge.

Tap the score line on whatever hard edged surface you're using. Flower should break on your score. BE SURE you have somewhere for your flower to fall that's safe. After all this you don't want to break THAT!!

Step 3:

If your little piece of stem is still a tad too long, you can grind it down.

To insert in my mirror, I dremmeled a hole out the size of the stem. The MDF was 1/2" thick, the hole was about 1/4" deep. This will give you room to really secure the flower with a lot of glue.

I do not attach the flower until AFTER I have grouted. This way you're not trying to smoosh grout up under the flower!

I'm assuming these stems are just too large for the nippers??? WHERE do you get those wonderful flowers?

Yep, stems are too large for my nippers. Won't go into the jaws.
I bought all my flowers at a dollar store. Normal people put them into a clear vase with marbles.

Glad your not normal!Are any of us?I sure hope not!Thanks for showing us how to cut ,I pass them up because I didn't know how to remove stem.

No normal people here LOL. Thanks for the info. I've only found the bigger size at TS. Havent seen any at the $ store, but I may look harder!

If ya don't mind me asking, what "brand" $ store?? Dollar Tree, Dollar General,......there's so many, but I'm hoping you got them at one of the national chain type places ;)

I've bought them at different places.
Fred's, Dollar Tree too! Might even try Big Lots. Maybe in the spring?

hehe.......normal people :) I know my niece bought some and set them out at our cemetary,being in the sun and all for all these years,they're still bright colored and sparkly.

We went to the Dollar Store yesterday and I found the largest selection of glass globs, shells and rocks ever! Was I thrilled! It put our craft store to shame. And you can't beat 1 lb. for $1.

Here's part of my flower stash. I collected them for a while. I was gonna do this whole "glass garden" thing. Glass flowers mixed in with my stepping stones.
Well, now I've changeg my mind. Now it's "Off with their heads!! Ah-ha-ha-ha!!!"
