Ready for the kiln - 2 projects

I only have an 8" kiln at home( that I bought at a rummage sale ) so I sign up for glass fusing at the senior center & use the big kilns. These are the 2 biggest things I've made --- they're all set to be melted :)

The 2 horses are irridized black that I cut out with my ring saw ....

The zebra has gaps that I added filler glass in , but once it's fired ,it'll all melt and it'll fill everything in.

Classes start in Sept. I can't wait !! :)

Both of those are cool pieces! I wish somebody around here would have a fusing class, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

Good grief!!!!!!! You are so danged good w/that ring saw. I'm amazed at your skill. Those details on the horses are just amazing. And the BORDER. Girl! You're a real pro. Those projects are gonna be soooooooooooooo beautiful.

Lord, I didn't realize glass could be cut that precisely. I've heard it's hard to keep your tracing line on the glass because the water washes it off. What method do you use? I don't have a ring saw, but I keep eyeing them....

I use chapstick over my lines !!! I draw the lines with a fine tipped paint pen , when it's dry in A few minutes -- I rub chapstick on my finger and dab it along the line so it's waterproofed. Works like a charm ! You can also use cheap-o flavored lip balm , when you're cutting -- it smells great ! LOL You can cut anything with a ring saw . I bought mine about 4 years ago , and I was afraid of it till about 2 months ago when I jumped in with both feet to try it ! Now I see it's so easy ... I'm loving it !

I had heard someone mention chapstick before, it was probably you. Thanks for the tip! You do beautiful work. I know what you mean about being afraid of it. I don't have a ring saw, but that's one of the reasons I haven't bought one yet. It looks a little scary, LOL

Do you feel you need a grinder too? Or does the ring saw cut clean enough that it's not necessary?

If you're very careful , you can grind with the saw. It takes alot of practice . I can't tell you how many times I just went to Touch the glass with the blade - and I ended up with a big gouge ! LOL A grinder is so much easier & forgiving !

Good to know. I don't know if I have the space or the money for both machines. I suppose I should start out with the cutter then go from there.
