Beware of Glass Dust

Hi Everybody ! I'm still around ... keeping busy at the senior center taking classes and hanging out in the exercise room. I love watching OTHER PEOPLE exercise ~ LOL

I just had to pop in and tell you something I found out . It's a small world . I have a friend that knew the lady that engraved bevels at Studio One when I worked there.

You've probably seen them on cards hanging in the glass stores. Anywho ..... I was told - from grinding glass all day for years and not wearing a mask - she now has lung cancer from all the glass dust. She even had water trickling over the glass while she was grinding / engraving ... I guess it wasn't enough. It was a sad thing to hear - she's only in her 50's .

I'm the worst one of all to ignore all the safety precautions , but I think this might have instantly wised me up . Please , if you know someone who is into glass - tell them to be safe.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear this. I hope she can beat it.
Thanks for the head's up....even though I don't do very much grinding at a time, I will now wear a dust mask along with my safety glasses!

Just cleaning the studio after cutting and grinding glass can kick up glass dust. You should always wear a mask when working in your studio...You can also get it from working with cement without a mask. Anything that is foreign to the body and is in powder form is bad for your lungs but glass and cement are among the worst. My kids spend a lot of time in the studio with me and they know too that upon opening the door they are required to put a mask on. That is the rule for anyone who comes into my studio unless it has been freshly scrubbed and mopped and noone has worked with glass or lead in there. I was bad at it for a long time until I found that I was getting more lung related illnesses and asked the dr about it.

How sad....Whenever I finished grinding glass my throat felt weird so I always wear a mask. The only problem I found was the mask made my safety glasses fog up, I prefer to use a bandana, like a bank robber, looks stupid, but I can see.
