Certain tiles are high fire frost proof and those must not be.

Hi, Carol! Sounds like a fun project....with the temp swings we get here in No TX, it's pretty much a crap shoot with many tiles and some ceramics. Like Nicethyme said, the high fire frost proof tiles would be best, but if you're like me you just used what you had on hand or could easily get. The ones under the cabana may not show damage as soon as these did since they have more protection from rain, dew, etc. An idea, if you want to salvage the pretty table top you did....can you remove part or all of the "remains" of those tiles that have lost their tops and replace them with bits/pieces of stained glass using some thinset as the adhesive? Just a thought. Course, you might want to scatter some more sg pieces about the top randomly to make it look more planned.

I have stuff out in my yard doing the same thing! Grrr...so now I only use porceline tiles, even tho they aren't as colorful, I know all my hard work will last. I also use glass tiles and slate/marble stones etc.

I have some flower pots I made with ceramic tiles and they are doing great. Maybe the flat tiles broke because of water sitting on a flat surface and freezing. Maybe I'll put a freezecloth over the bench in the winter months when we don't use it. I didn't seal the table when I did it. Do you think sealing it would've helped? This is why I thought the tiles cracked so I didn't worry about using the tiles again. I thought I'd just seal it.

Sealing is must and it does appear that some were low fire tiles.
