Domestic violence is a silent epidemic affecting the entire spectrum of society at all educational and socioeconomic levels. Listed below are some statistics that you may not be aware of:

One-fifth of the adults employed in the U.S. have been victims of domestic violence. 65 % are women, 35 % are men (Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence)

One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. (U.S. Department of Justice, Intimate Partner Violence)

Health-related costs of intimate partner violence exceed $5.8 billion each year. (Center for Disease Control)

Domestic violence is the single greatest cause of injury to women ages 15 to 44 in the U.S. Â more than muggings, car accidents and rapes combined.

In 2007, 86 women in NC lost their lives as a result of domestic violence, from January 1 to September 12, 2008, 72 women in NC have lost their lives at the hand of someone who claimed to "love" them.

What can we do about it? GET INVOLVED. Domestic violence is not a private matter between a couple, it is a criminal offence that merits a strong and swift response. All too often victims fear for their lives if they report abuse or call the police.

We must ask poignant questions when faced with someone who might be a victim of domestic violence. When you see a woman with a black eye who says she fell and hit a doorknob, ask the question "Did someone hit you?"

Education is key. Society must be made aware of this silent epidemic. Women must be educated to the fact that violence is never acceptable. And they must also be empowered to break the cycle and live peaceful and productive lives, safe from danger in their own homes.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, please speak up. If you donÂt, one day it may be too late. The National Domestic Violence Hotline number is: 1-800- 799-SAFE (7233). The call is free and confidential.
