RECIPE: Foods To Eat Before and During Chemotherapy???

I have heard that there are some certain foods that help the chemotherapy do its job. Do you know of any?

Well, no one has posted so I will. Not that I can help with your question. I am on chemo and will be going in for my third treatment tomorrow. Mine lasts 8 hours. I eat a special diet that I found in a book "Beating Cancer with Nutrition" by Dr. Patrick Quillan. He makes a compelling case for staying away from certain things like sugar and white flour. But there are many foods that are OK and many others that are not. You'd have to read about it because it isn't as simple as that. I don't know if it will help to be on this diet, but I know it can't hurt.

Drat that morning sickness! Blech! I easily ate eggs all my life growing up, scrambled, over easy, omelettes, hard boiled etc. Became pregnant with number #1, and one of the few things I could eat was eggs. Craved them. After he was born, I couldn't eat an egg without feeling ill, and I'd brush my teeth over and over to try to get the 'taste' of the egg out. When I became pregnant with #2, I wanted eggs again and could eat them again...until I came home with #2 and fixed me up an egg to eat because I was hungry, and after I wanted to puke. Haven't been able to eat eggs since. Neither kid will eat them. And milk, I drank a litre or more a day, would wake up in the morning after dreaming of drinking milk straight from the taps in the house. Weird. #1 Loves milk (has to be chocolate now tho'). With #2 I could barely get a glass of milk down a day, did it only because I had to, but loved fruit and juices. #2 favors fruit and juices. Also ate lots of peanut butter with #2, and now #2 enjoys peanut butter. I didn't eat any peanut butter with #1, and guess what - he won't touch the stuff! Here's hoping the taste buds and cravings get back to normal for you (and baby).

MMMMMM garlic and butter----mmmm, on the grill. So delicious. Well, he WAS hungry, contrary to his protestions of not being hungry. I'll bet he got VERY hungry the minute he smelled the grill, the butter, the garlic and, perhaps, the shrimp. I sure would. It'd make me famished. Not to diminish your culinary skills at all, but other than overcooking---how could you screw up garlic, butter, shrimp? On second thought, I could screw it up in the wink of an eye. I would/could get preoccupied in some meaningless thing in 30 seconds and mess up these marvelous ingredients. Maybe that's why I cook less and less and my family says........

Here's our friend Maria's everyday chicken mole or, as she explained to me long ago, amused by the new culinary fuss over "moles," chicken in gravy. Maria was the oldest of 10 and spent her childhood here in the U.S. babysitting and on a stool preparing meals while the adults were out in the fields. She's a fantastic cook, but this is simple home cooking, no chocolate, no "special" ingredients. I'm offering it because I never see it on recipe forums and it is delicious, definitely winter comfort food. Amounts are approximate, of course, and can be massaged as desired. Chicken broth Water and 2-3 pounds chicken parts, chicken, plus whatever you usually add, such as: 1/2 onion 2 cloves garlic 1 leafy stalk celery. 1 bay leaf 2 teaspoons thyme Salt and pepper to taste Gravy 3 tablespoons chicken fat (skimmed from chicken broth) 1/2 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic 3 tablespoons flour Cumin seed, broken up, to taste, about 1 tablespoon or more Good quality chili powder to taste, start with a tablespoon if unsure 3 cups chicken broth Simmer first group of ingredients about 20 minutes, skimming foam as they approach a low boil, then turning heat down to simmer about 20 minutes for the typical supermarket chicken. Remove and cool chicken enough to pull apart into bite-size pieces. For gravy, lightly saute onion, garlic and spices in chicken fat skimmed from the broth. Sift flour into the pan, whisking quickly, and stir over low-medium heat until flour is cooked; will be bubbly but not browned. Then stir in defatted chicken broth and simmer until thickened. Salt as desired. At this point you can add more chili powder to taste if needed and simmer a bit more. We like it a nice medium chile-red, not pale and not dark. Then add the chicken and serve over whatever you like.

Looks like various untoward cooking habits tend to drive some people a bit squirrelly? A number of the potlucks that I've attended were family or church-related ... and a number of the people at our smallish church know one another's cooking habits quite well. Don't recall having had any tummy problems in quite a long time. Including my first use of a gifted crockpot last week ... that ran for a few hours, daily, and took forever to cook the smell (so help me, that was supposed to have been "small"!)bits of carrot, potato, chicken and onion ... for almost a week. But I grew up on a farm during World War II, when the hired hands on Dad's large (for those days) farm had gone to war, and we had lots of farm chores to not only keep us busy ... but develop our immune systems, as well. Including pig/cow/horse/chicken manure on hands, clothing, occasionally on face, etc. The dog thought it a real treat to be allowed into the house on a rare occasion, though. Cats/dogs didn't get to lick our dishes ... but, now that I live alone, I've been known to lick out the bowl following breakfast ... to put it in good order for soup, come supper-time. Now that my hairs are fewer ... and shorter ... they get harder to find should they happen to have fallen into some of my food. And ... as someone suggested, quoting someone less fastidious, "... it hasn't killed me, yet". Tomorrow's another day, though. I suspect that I ate some dog in Korea over 50 years ago, though, as I thought that some meat in the soup/stew where I was a guest was a bit different ... and saw an empty dog-hide being carried across the yard, later that day. ole joyfuelled

I am currently having radiation treatments. My best wishes and prayers go out to you as your go through chemo.

My doctor recommended that I get 1 or 2 good books about nutrution and supplements. He has helped me work out a plan that I can live with and will meet my own requirments. My surgeon and 2 oncologists have approved my diet and supplements.

I have Dr. Quillan's book and "Challenge Cancer and Win" by Kim Dalzell. Dalzall's book has nutrition plans and info for specific cancers since they are not all the same.

I want offer you some insight shared with me by my surgeon who is also a cancer survivor. The rest of your life is about balance. You don't need to be 'an*l' about your nutrition and supplements but you do need to find the balance of nutrition, supplements, and exercise that will benefit you and your body the best. I have found the balance that works for me. This journey that the cancer started has been interesting and educational in so many different ways.

I would suggest that you try getting the books from your library or ordering them. I got mine from Amazon.
