LOOKING for: Sugarfree & Heart Healthy recipes

Can anyone help suggesting a good recipe book on the following?? I am new to needing these recipes as I just had a heart attack & now they say I have sugar too, all at the ripe old age of 48! Time foe life style change big time! TIA Wendy

I don't know if this book is still available, but "Live Longer and Better" is a good resource for not only recipes but also for making good lifestyle choices. It was put out by the editors of Consumer Guide. My copy is 1994, I don't know if it's been updated, but if not check used book resources- it should be cheap.

The South Beach diet is good for you too, as long as you stick to mostly fish and veggie meals. Too much cholesterol from meats, even lean meats, will not help your heart. I also have "Protein Power" by Eades and Eades which has many good recipes. It also has information about how your diet affects your health.

The only other thing I would suggest is to ask your doctor about an exercise program if you don't already exercise regularly.

I was also going to suggest the South Beach Diet. My husband has lost 40 pounds since his heart attack 4 months ago. He was also prediabetic. Ignore the stupid outdated nutritional advice provided by the Heart Association. I really feel bad for the poor people in his cardiac rehab classes trying to live on their recommended low fat diets. I found the Suzanne Somers diet books had fantastic recipes. I finally ended up checking out all her books from the library and copying the best recipes.

I also got some recipes from www.foodtv.com and doing a search for low carb. Good luck!!

I have a few crockpot recipes that I enjoy but I'm trying to select a few that I think may seem "healthier" than others! Posted by: rider (My Page) on Tue, Oct 28, 03 at 9:18 Turkey breast. I throw mine in with chicken broth, some butter, olive oil, spices, carrots, celery. Black beans sometimes. Despite the disaster with rice in my last episode, the meat comes out great. Like Annie, I shred it for burritos, etc. Chicken Cacciatore (crockpot) #30569 by dallice (see my other recipes) posted on Jun 8, 2002 (4 reviews) My husband loves chicken cacciatore, I did not. Not until I came up with this recipe. Quick and easy, and the crock pot is very convenient. The leftovers are great too! 7-8 boneless skinless chicken thighs 1 (15.00 ounces) can diced peeled tomatoes 1 can tomato paste 1 (14.50 ounces) can tomato sauce 2 (2.25 ounces) cans mushrooms, stems & pieces 1 can sliced olives 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes 2 teaspoons dried parsley 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon thyme 2 teaspoons italian seasoning 1 tablespoon sugar 1. Clean any unwanted fat from chicken pieces. 2. Add all ingredients to crock pot, mix well, making sure chicken is covered. 3. Cover and cook for 7 to 9 hours. 4. I know what that's like! I attend a university and also work there. I may not live on campus, but feel like it! Anyway, our department just made a cookbook that included some easy healthy recipes in it. Hope some of these will interest you. If not, there is a book you can purchase called "The Healthy College Cookbook : Quick, Cheap, Easy" by Alexandra Nimetz. It's written by students for students with your same need. Good Luck and Happy Eating! Easy Fruit Salad 1 can (11 oz.) mandarin oranges 1 can (13 oz.) pineapple 1 banana, sliced Maraschino cherries (for color) 1 small pkg. instant vanilla pudding Make vanilla pudding by using 1 cup juice from mandarin oranges and pineapple instead of milk. Add oranges, pineapples and cherries. Refrigerate until serving time. Just before serving, add bananas. Sicilian Tomato Salad 4 large fresh tomatoes , sliced 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated Large Romaine lettuce leaves 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 T. of vinegar (half white vinegar & half red wine vinegar) 1 tsp. chili powder (optional) 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. garlic powder or one clove, minced 1/8 tsp. black pepper Make the dressing by mixing together the oil, vinegar and four spice, then refrigerate while you prepare the salad platter. Line a very large platter with romaine lettuce leaves. Top with sliced tomatoes. Sprinkle on the grated cheese. Right before serving, stir and drizzle on all of the dressing Creamy Vegetables 1 can of cream soup (whatever you prefer-chicken, mushroom,celery, ect.) 2 tbsp. dried parsley salt and pepper 1 lb bag of your favorite frozen vegetables In a large microwave-safe bowl combine soup, parsley, and salt and pepper. Stir in vegetables. Cover and cook on 70 percent power for five minutes. Stir and continue cooking on 70 percent for five to seven minutes, or until heated through. Sprinkle with cheese if desired and cook on high for two minutes. Gourmet Pasta for the College Bound 16 ounces pasta 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 cup milk 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese Cook pasta in boiling salted water until tender. Drain. To a saucepan, add butter or margarine, salt, milk, and Parmesan cheese. Cook over low heat until combined. Pour mixture over pasta, and serve. Let stand three to five minutes before serving. Chicken Caesar Pita Sandwich 2 Boneless skinless chicken breast halves, cooked, cut into thin strips (You can buy them in the grocery store already cooked and cut into strips) 3 cups Torn romaine lettuce or mixed greens 2 Tbsp cup (1 oz.) 100% Grated Parmesan Cheese 1/4 cup Roasted Garlic Dressing (Or instead you can buy a caesar salad kit that includes the lettuce dressing and cheese in it) 2 Pita breads, cut in half Mix chicken, lettuce, cheese and dressing. Fill pita bread halves with chicken mixture. VARIATION: Prepare as directed, substituting flour tortillas for pita bread. Fill tortillas; roll up for a wrap sandwich. Macaroni Florentine 1 (14-oz) package Deluxe Macaroni and Cheese Dinner or Velveeta Macaroni and Cheese Dinner 1 can of sliced mushrooms 1 (10 oz) package Chopped Spinach, thawed and WELL drained salt and pepper if desired Directions: Prepare pasta as directed on package. Add mushrooms and spinach to pasta; mix lightly, serve.

Gluten-gree is THE way to go. I dropped 20 pounds in 4 weeks doing nothing but eating gluten-free. have the "Wheat Belly" book, and I've read most of it. I have tried only two recipes, the Crab Cakes and the Pizza. The Crab Cakes were heavenly, the Pizza was... passable. My grand-daughters ate it (they're 6 and 2), but if it looks like pizza, they'll eat it. In my experience, nothing that is SUPPOSED to taste like bread tastes like bread. It's not soft, not doughy and yeasty, just... not. The breads you can buy or make are great for toast, french toast, breadcrumbs for cooking, etc. But they're not good for sandwiches or pizza doughs if you want a soft crust. I just had to learn to live without. I don't even save them for "special treats" because I'd rather just lose my taste and craving for such things. In ALL other recipes that aren't breads/muffins/bagels, I just replaced wheat flour with soy flour. I can't tell a difference really, or it feels so much better in my stomach that it SEEMS to taste better.

My friend went today to his first cardiac rehab appointment and was very disappointed in the diet advice. They told him he could have a piece of red meat once a month. He says they more or less told him that if it's good, he can't eat it anymore. I'd like to help him stick to a heart healthy diet. He's not overweight. Just 54, out of shape, had a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery. And hasn't smoked in the month since the heart attack and surgery. I thought that if he thinks he can eat good food, maybe he'll be less likely to pick up a cigarette again. Is the South Beach Diet ok for someone who doesn't need to lose weight?

Not familiar with the south beach Diet, but If you do have high blood sugar you need to not only stay away from a lot of sugar, but simple carbohydrates too such as white bread etc. All carbohydrates metabolize into sugar. Simple ones such as sugar and white bread do so a lot faster. If the South Beach Diet limits you to a certain # of grams of carbohydrates a meal then it sounds good.

I think any Diabetic Cook book would be good too. They are geared toward heart healthy as well as blood sugar control.

I can't recommend any cookbooks off-hand but I can
tell you that it is important what alternative
sweetener you choose to use. I have been using Stevia
for over a year and I absolutely love it. I didn't at
first but I had to make a change because of my blood
sugar. I lost 5 pounds just from that change in my
diet! The following url is the company from which I
purchase my stevia. I get SteviaPlus
Powder and SteviaClear Liquid. One really wouldn't
need a new cookbook that is sugar-free if you switched
to stevia. I hope you find what you need. If I can be

I have been using the "Healthy Calendar" cookbook, put out jointly by the ADA and AHA. 5 dinners a week for a year. It has helped lower DH's (type 2) blood sugar, and blood pressure readings. We have both lost 8-10 lbs since Feb. We didn't like some of the recipes, but some have been excellent. Available at Amazon.
