I didn't know it would mold. I make a whipped body butter and I have never added any kind of preservative to mine. Now I am wondering. My body butter is made from cocoa butter, shea butter, and almond oil. I whip it to get it light and fluffy. That's all that I put in mine. I sell mine, too, and now I am worried about mold, although the recipe that I originally ran across said nothing about the possibility of mold.

Its because I put filtered water in mine as well, the water causes mold if a preservative is not used.

Do you melt your butters down before whipping? The problem I had with just using butters and oil was the greasiness of the butter, the water breaks it down so it is alot more like a thick cream with out the messy oil.

I soften mine, not really melted. Especially the cocoa butter. The shea butter is already soft enough to whip well without melting any. I just put them in a bowl and use my beater to whip it. I add a little almond oil at a time until it is the consistany I want, then I let it sit overnight so I can see what consistany it will be when it is completely cooled. If needed, I add more almond oil.

I used shea and cocoa butters with essential oils and I too had one person say they had mold. No one else from the same batch has reported this and I reached out to inquire. It makes me wonder how ppl are storing products. Any advice?

Hey guys, i had the same issue mold popping up in my mixtures, i thought it was moisture in my jars so i cleaned up all my jars and used a heat gun to dry them that didn't work. I thought it might have been the Xanthian gum took that out but it didnt work. Took out all my fancy ingredients like cucmumber, bamboo and pomegranate extracts THAT DIDNT WORK 😭🤣 so i ended up giving up on whipped body butter using water and turned to making body butter without water and i just use powder to degrease the mixture so it sinks into the skin instantly... I still prefer to make whipped butter with water because it doesn't melt in high temperatures, but its too risky i ended up wasting hundreds and hundreds of dollars in product.

I still have no clue of the cause of it, but the one thing i DIDNT TRY was adding more preservative, i was adding 2% to all my formulas. So ill give it one more try and try it with 6% and see what happens. 😊 This conversation thread helped me alot. Thankyou.

Interesting feed. I added a bit of lemon oil and one drop vanilla, raw shea butter, grape seed oil, coconut oil. 3 mths later it has a mold smell. I have 3 ringworm spots on my arm and hand! This has never happened in my life. 20 oz big jar of stuff wasted! Anyone ever heard of this?
