Where to get pretty soap labels?

Hi,

I was wondering where I could get some pretty soap labels? I'm assuming those of you who sell your handmade soaps have a source/sources for the labels? I would like to use them for my bathroom accessories...apothecary jars and such, heck, maybe even for soap! ;)

I make my soap labels for the soap I sell, but I bought some real pretty (replica) vintage soap labels from The Scent of Home Candle Company for my personal use. I just checked and their website is currently not available, but I will post the link anyway.

How do you make your labels? On the computer? Is this something I could do, too? It really boggles my mind that these are not, readily, available through the different suppliers.

You have to admit, though, that it's rather fun the see what they turn out to be. :-) I have quite a few mislabeled seeds. I neglected some, pampered others. Turned out to be a mistake, because those that I neglected were actually what I had been looking for..duh. Nancy, those are my favorite tags. The best kind. Last year during a gardening lull, I made a huge number of plant tags from mini blinds I got from Freecycles. They are the most economical tags and most practical. I just moved them from the container to the ground when I planed out the seedlings. They don't fade in the sun. They are reused over and over again because I write with a #2 pencil. Last year I sent some seedlings to a friend in Iowa. She just told me that the tags are still perfectly legible. The best recycling effort for me.

Charlies Soap 45 gal. bucket...where do you put yours?

I keep my bucket of Charlie's Soap in the basement in the storage room (this room is designed with large rolling shelving racks to store food/grains/seeds/beans, household goods... I fill a 1-quart container I keep in the laundry room about once every 2 months. My container is a clear plastic, wide-mouthed container that has a hinged, snap-on lid I found at Target. I also keep the 1 T. measuring spoon inside. The back corner of a closet would also be another place to consider. You could also sub-divide it into empty 1-gallon or 1/2-gallon milk jugs or 2-litre pop bottles. They may be easier to store than the bucket. I figure it will take us 3.5 years to use this amount. -Grainlady

I am a dressmaker, sometimes I get small orders from local stores for some of my items. I needed to put labels in the clothing stating the size, fabric content, washing instructions and country of origin. I also wanted to put my logo and web address in the clothing label. I needed an inexpensive solution for creating individual labels. Here is what I came up with and it works rather well. Making your own personalized labels: 1. Design your label: I used the Avery business card making software (free download) 2. Cut a piece of fusible, woven interfacing the same size as your printer paper (8.5" x 11") 3. Place the interfacing on a piece of paper. Using a warm iron, fuse just the edges of the interfacting onto the paper, being careful to keep it smooth and free of air bubbles. 4. After you have printed your labels onto the interfaced paper, carefully remove the interfacing from the paper. Place the interfacing onto a piece of pressed, white polycotton or cotton fabric and fuse the interfacting to the fabric. Now you have a sheet of labels you can cut out and use. After you cut them out, you can zig zag the edges if you want. I haven't found the edges to fray in the washer because they are fused. I have a Lexmark printer I bought at Walmart. The black ink holds up in the washer, but the color ink washes out. If you want to have color in the labels, use a waterproof ink. Here is a link that might be useful: Avery Templates

Our kitchen isn't done yet, but we're putting hand soap in the dispensers at both the prep & main sink. I considered putting the dish soap in the dispenser, but I like to be able to squirt my dish soap at different places as needed. If it's in the dispenser the only place to put it is either in the sink where it "falls" or on the edge of pans/dishes as far in as the spout sticks out (I hope this made sense!) As to using dish soap for both...I find that even Palmolive is too harsh for regular hand washing...maybe if you only did it once or twice a day, but I wash my hands many more times a day. IMO, the "hand soap" label on the Palmolive (yes, we use that brand) refers to "hand dish washing" as opposed to "machine dish washing"...despite "Madge"! ("you're soaking in it!")

I use Microsoft Publisher, although any program that can make business cards would do. I use a business card format, and customize it. I then print out a sheet of them on regular printer paper, and cut them out. I affix them to the soap using Scotch brand storage tape. The storage tape is temperature and moisture resistant. This tape also acts as a seal of sorts for the bar of soap, too. I do the same thing, except sometimes I use different lable formats, for all of my bath products I sell. My graphics that I use I obtain by browsing the usenet newsgroup, alt.binaries.clip-art. This has worked well for me, and is more cost efficient than buying labels.

It's easy and fun (and quite cost effective) to design your own labels.

Go to http://www.avery.com and download the free version of Avery Design Pro. It's very user friendly. You may use it to design labels, business cards, hang tags or "cigar band"-style wrappers for your soaps.

Quite new to the process and to Avery, can you point me to a label number that can create the cigar bands i couldn't find them! t hanks!!!

I use Label Factory to make my labels for all of my products. It is very easy to use and you can create custom size labels and pull in any graphics of yours or it comes with some graphics.
