Help with Lotion

I made my first lotions this weekend and they turned out pretty good except I am dissatisfied with the scents-It's like they disappear or something. I'm using the recommended amounts, putting them in after the stuff cools down. Anyone have a clue what is causing this or how you can enhance the smell? Thanks.

I don't make my lotions, I use a ready-made base. However, with most of my fragrances I find that I have to add more than the recommended amount. I have also found that they will smell stronger after they have sat for a few days. If they still don't smell good enough for you, go ahead and try adding in more fragrance a little at a time.

You should try making the lotions, it is soooo much fun-really a cool thing. In just a few minutes you have clear oil and water mixes that turn into thick white cream-really cool, made my own mixture up, thought I had ruined it at first it was watery, when it cooled down it is the neatest stuff. I also made my first sugar scrub, loved the way it made my skin feel. Can you tell I'm excited about this new hobby? My friends say I'm more excited about the lotion than making soap--I think they're right! I'm still debating about ordering from SweetCakes- I ordered the Vanilla Bean Noel knockoff and the Angel knockoff from MMS and was slightly disappointed in them. Don't think they're very true. Trying to spread my hobby dollars around though!

Carla, we are in the same boat. I'm trying to get myself (skin, hair, and figure) in better shape for my son's wedding this summer and have recently started using Olay Definity Pore Redefining Scrub and Neutrogena Pore Refining Cream (spf 15). I think cleaning your skin with something targeted for your "problems" is every bit as important as putting on a cream or lotion. And really effective cleansing should help with the breakouts you mentioned. I've only been using these products for about a week but I can already see improvement - really! My skin looks and feels smoother and looks more even in tone. Even the dreaded pores look a bit better. I expect that part to take a while but I am very pleased with the results so far. I've gotten compliments - without make up. Neither of these products is very expensive and a little goes a long way. I think they are well worth the price and the effort to use them consistently.

Found this on the net. Monster Spray This spray works equally well on monsters and bad dreams. We spray it as part of the nightly bedtime ritual, while DD chants, "Monsters, Monsters, stay away." The lavender scent is calming and everyone knows that monsters and bad dreams hate that smell. This spray saved us from lots of tears and terror at bedtime and in the middle of the night. 1 bottle 6-8 ounces water 3-4 drops lavender oil Let child pick out a "magical" spray bottle. Fill bottle with water. Add essential oil. Shake well. Spray in corners, under beds, in closets, etc. Child may chant "monsters, monsters, stay away" or any other powerful words. Shake before each use to make the magic strong. Here is the poem that I use for the angel cream. ANGEL CREAM It's time to rest your sleepy head, Kick off your slippers and climb into bed. Dab on your wrist some angel cream, So Angels will watch over you as you dream.

Ruthieg...I can't answer for Michelle...but I can tell you that I, personally, wasted large sums of money trying every lotion/cream/salve that was recommended by a pharmacist and/or dermatologist. The insidious thing about eczema and psoriasis is that not everything works for everybody and recommendations from real live sufferers are my best sources for tried and true products so I return the informational kindness forward when I'm able. This is a wonderfully helpful forum for those in need of actual experience info and I, for one, hope it continues to be for those in need. Anne

Can I make soap using lotion?

While it would depend on the ingredient list, the off the cuff answer is "no." Soap, in its pure form, is made from base oil and lye. The glycerin is actually a by-product of the soaping process as three molecules of fat plus three molecules of lye make three molecules of soap...plus one molecule of glycerin. Glycerin itself won't react with lye as it's already a post-process material. In most lotions, the other ingredients also won't make soap when reacted with lye. I'm not sure what many of them would make...but it won't be soap...and the result won't be skin-safe in the slightest. I'd regift those bottles to other people who would be able to use them.

I am not sure why I never tried making my own, I guess because I never had all the ingredients required. Do you think it is cheaper to make your own or buy a ready made base, or are the costs about the same? What ingredients did your recipe require? Now you have my curiousity up. LOL.

I debated buying a base but wanted to experiment. I have developed a calculator and my first three batches ranged from 19 to 44 cents an ounce, but I am using some pretty exotic oils such as Red Raspberry Seed which is the most expensive at 5.50 for 2 ozs. I splurged and bought scales, jars, fragrances 9 different oils/butters, etc so I guess in reality the first one cost about $350 the rest have been cheap, LOL. I bought my stuff from Majestic Mountain Sage, they have quite a few recipes and have been fantastic about answering my questions quickly. The first recipe I made was the Coffee Butter Latte cream and the coffee butter was also pretty expensive. for the sugar scrub I used the sunflower oil which is cheap, 16 ozs for $3. I also made a lotion which is their class recipe (not on the website) Then the third batch of lotion I made up myself using my calculator (it gives recommended ranges for ingredients etc) and it came out wonderful (if I could just get it smellier). I feel like a mad scientist, now I just need a lab!

I bought my stuff from Majestic Mountain Sage, they have quite a few recipes and have been fantastic about answering my questions quickly.
