candle luminaries

I'm attempting to make candle luminaries by pouring wax into the mold and then pouring out the wax that has not yet hardened from the center leaving the outside shell. As I did not have mold release I read that you could put the mold in the freezer and that worked great. The wax popped right out, etc., but as I was holding it in my hand admiring my handiwork it cracked, all over. I used wax left over from a ton of votive candles that were burned down (I'm a special event decorator), and was using a round pillar mold.
Questions: Could the warmth of my hand make it crack?
Could the outside walls have been too thin?
I would appreciate more that words can say any help here. I volunteered to do this for my nieces wedding in a few weeks (plus I need to make them a clover green color.
