Candle instructions

I love candles. I buy them all the time. I would love to know how to make them. I want to learn to make the jar type with the pretty colors and the great scents. Can anyone give me a crash course on how to make them? I need instructions that a newbie can understand.

The best thing for you to do is to purchase a candle making kit from one of the good on-line suppliers. Bittercreek offers them, I believe, and Wholesale Supplies Plus might but I can't remember. The kit will include everything you need except containers. That's how I started a few years ago.

Hey Linda...that looks a lot like mine. I even painted it white! You could cut up a bit higher, but the bottom is good. I cut further down on the bottom, manipulated a tea light in between the strips and the first problem I encountered was that the bottom is rounded, and the candle kept sliding. I put a drop of hot glue and moved it into position very quickly! (took a couple of tries before I could set it before it dried.) Then the wind kept blowing it out. I'm not sure I could get a small glass holder in there, so the next one is going to be more like yours, Linda. Maybe higher sides would protect the flame. (But I am starting to wonder if it's all worth the effort...) Nancy

Interesting topic Wanda and thanks for the instructions on how to carve out a pillar. I've usually just let them burn enough to make a well to hold a real tealight then messed around with a knife but your way sounds much neater. :-) I burn real tealights, votives, tapers, then pillars in that order of frequency but tealights the most. I have a bazillion tealight holders (ys finds) and feel they are safer than tapers with the cats. I like the beeswax or soya the best altho have a lifetime supply of paraffin ones but mostly use them outdoors in the summer. Ikea has the best quality paraffin tealights for the lowest price IMO and sell in bags of 100 for about $3 on sale ($4-something regular) and I've also bot them at YS's for even less. I do have some battery ones I got a few years ago for the RV (for safety) but wasn't impressed with the appearance of the flame altho I've been told they have improved so should give them a try again. I like the idea of remote control pillars as I have the same accessibility problem on my mantel. I'd like to use them as there are convection currents because of the stove and my beeswax tapers dripped on the silk poinsettias at Christmas.

Oh - how pretty! I saw something simlar in the first Gooseberry Patch Christmas book - they were done in the milk cartons and had some colored chunks of wax and evergreen tossed it. They look so nice. The salt containter would be perfect. Your Girl Scout leader was a saint!

My fiance's mom bought my first candle making kit at a Craft store. I just love making candles now. I just need to learn how to use the oils with them. I do buy the scented wax. Susan is right... buy the kit and go from there. Good luck.... Liz
