Hello I am new to soap making, and I want to try MP rather than HP and CP,however, I recently bought MP goats milk base and was wondering if I could use a crock pot instead of the microwave or a double boiler to melt it? also I was wondering if it is possible to use the crock pot, what temp should the crock pot be on and how long do you thing a 1lb of GM base will take to melt, before I can add the additives?

I know that it is OK to use an electric melter, because I use one. What I use is a Presto Pot, because it has a real temperature dial (not just low/medium/high.) I set the temperature to about 200 degrees Fahrenheit. It's not a good idea to go higher than that, because MP soap can boil out of the pot at around the boiling point of water.

BTW, you can also buy a Presto Pot that has been fitted with a spigot on the bottom, to get the soap out easily. Just do a web search fro "Presto Pot melter". A lot of sites call them wax melters, but they work fine for MP soap too.

I don't do M&P, but don't add the scent (if you're using some) if the M&P is too hot, you'll burn it off.

Maybe someone who does this regularly will pipe in with some tips.

Then may I suggest a Dutch Oven? Brown the meat in a little bit of fat...oil, bacon grease whatever. Brown slowly so all sides are nice and browned. add a chopped onion a clove or so of crushed garlic, about 1 1/2 cups liquid...either beef broth wine, beer veggie broth or a mixture of some of the above and scrape up the browned bits in the pan, cover and place in a 225 oven for 3 or 4 hours, depending on the size of the piuece of meat, add your potatoes after about 1 1/2 hours....and I like to add carrots too at that time. Thicken the gravy with a slurry of a little more broth/wine and flour and serve with the meat. Much better than cooking it to mush in a crock pot. Linda C

I season the meat with salt, pepper, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce, then use one packet of brown gravy mix, one packet of onion soup mix, 1.5 cups of water.... I also quarter a medium onion and drop it into the crock pot. I add potatoes (peeled and sliced the long way) and carrot chunks. I've never had complaints and it's always gone in short order! How about a (mild, if they need that) chili verde? Pork loin, cubed and braised; sauteed chopped onions and sweet peppers; a few spices; and salsa verde (or blendered tomatillos); some garlic & salt (use the salt that is half potassium-salt -- since the sodium problem is in part imbalance of those anyway). It's a bother to prep (due to the braise/sautee) but once prepped, all the ingredients freeze well, throwing it in the crockpot is how I cook it anyway, it's basically "meat with a watery sauce" in nature so it's very filling but can be dropped onto anything else (e.g. rice, beans, pasta). It's low-sugar naturally, and only has the sodium or msg you add. PJ

Thanks for the tip. I was tempted but I just got my Instant Pot and I think I need to use this for now. I also have a 5 quart crockpot that I use. I was tempted by the small size, but I probably have everything I need right now.
