Anyone still here? I need some suggestions again

My daughter and I are planning a party for her and she wants to have a "make it and take it" party. She's 14, and wants to make several "soap" things.

We are going to make the usual M&P soap, and we're also thinking about foamer bottles of shaving soap, loofah, poofs, bath salts,and maybe crystal potpourri.

Any other suggestions? I really don't want to spend a fortune on more supplies.

Well, I'm here but you have everything pretty well covered (plus more) of any ideas I can think of. The only other thing that comes to mind would be lotion or bath and shower gel. Both of those bases are cheap and they are simple to make. I know I wasn't much help, but Hazel is usually hanging around and she may have some more ideas.

If the girls are bath takers, I would do bubble bath also. A whole gallon is only $13-$14 at WSSP. It will do 16 8oz. bottles.

For the bath also are tub teas which are quick, easy, and inexpensive. Gather some mason jars with lids or even ziplock bags. You can make labels for the jars or bags on your computer. At your local health food store you can purchase all your herbs and a package of drawstring muslin bags. The girls could each get a baggie of herbs and a drawstring bag for their tea baths. I have about five different blends that I sell if you are interested. E-mail me for the herb combinations if you are.

Smelly jellies are another idea - along the same lines of your potpourri, but easy and relatively inexpensive.

You could also do something like head to toe. You can buy shampoo base at WSSP also. So they'd have shampoo, soap or shower gel for the body, lotion, shaving soap for legs, do a scrub for their feet, and from your dollar store purchase some foot files and some inexpensive toe nail polish.

Oh - I think Hazel has been in FL. She should be back around soon though and she might have more ideas.

Sativa, have you actually compared 2 node cuttings to 4 or 5 node cuttings taken from the same plants and grown under the same conditions? The node count won't make a noticeable difference by the time the plants are 6 months old if the rose is a sort takes off relatively quickly after rooting, but with other, slower building roses it can make a huge difference. The problem with starting all roses from undersized cuttings, whether or not a short supply of propagation material makes it necessary, is that you'll never know whether a lagging cutting is inherently less vigorous than the others or just needed an extra node or 2 to kick start new growth at the beginning. I rooted cuttings under close, 24/7 lights for a while when I first developed an interest in this hobby, but have since found that starting them under mist out of doors and then growing them on in real sunlight yields better results in my southern zone 8 climate. And it's a lot less of a hassle. The growing season is long here, and I'm usually ready to take a break from all things roses by the time winter rolls around. If I lived in zone 4b I'd probably be doing it the way you do, though.

I am "just me" as well. Here's what I do....and eat for 2 meals and freeze the rest. 1/4 cup chopped onion 2 T chopped green pepper Sautees slowly in 1 Tbs olive oil When starting to soften, add 1/2 pound lean ground beef and a large clove of garlic sliced thin or chopped. Sautee and stir until the meat is broken up and no longer pink. Add one large can ( think it's 32 oz) of whole canned Italian plum tomatoes. Break them up with your hands, and add 1 small can of continadina (other brands are bitter) tomato paste, and fill the can with dry red wine and add that too. Add herbs...1 bay leaf, 1 tsp dry oregano and 1 tsp dry basil and 1 tsp of dry parsley. Cover and simmer at least an hour, stirring occasionally. Serve over cooked pasta. Makes about 3 to 4 servings. Or....this is more likely to happen in the summer. In a 10 inch fry pan sautee a small sweet onion, half a green pepper and half a red or yellow pepper in 2 tablespoons of olive oil. When slightly softened add 2 small zucchini cut into chunks, or one zucchini and one small peeled eggplant, 2 cloves of garlic, several mushrooms...4 to 5 small ones, and 3 or 4 fresh peeled cut up tomatoes. add a handful of fresh mixed basil and parsley with a little oregano or thyme is you have it fresh... Cook fairly rapidly stirring often until most of the liquid has evaporated ands erve over pasta....top with Fresh grated parmesan. Oh my....I love summer!! Linda C

Love the Rohl - great idea. I had looked at it, but wanted a single bowl, but this is 1/2 the price of the single bowl with Hebereau... means I'm back into a 36" sink base though... I was hoping for a 30".... thanks for the reminder and the review of it being a strong sink... that makes me feel much better... I'll likely go this route... I'll just have to mourn my 18" waste cabinet, and embrace a 15" one instead... cheryl

Metamorph, I share your pain -- and curse the day that, being a silly naïf about the then-new world of HE machines, I passed on a $600 drum replacement for my trusty (and LARGE capacity) non-HE top loading Maytag. It wasn't perfect, but it got the clothes and comforters and towels clean and didn't think it was smarter than me. I won't recount the sordid tales of two subsequent sets of HE junkers (one FL, one TL) and their causes of death, but suffice it to say that I'm now in the market for a top-loading machine that (1) permits the user to manually set the water level; (2) does not leave the last of the prior load's rinse water in the bottom of the machine to "save" water for the next load (a synonym for "mildew factory" unless you always leave the lid open when the machine is not in use, and sometimes not even that works); (3) permits a long-term soak of really dirty items (after an initial rinse and drain) without automatically draining after its unchangeable preset time or even if you turn off the machine; and (4) has at least a 4+ cubic foot tub capacity so that we can wash a lightweight down comforter, more than one set of sheets and pillowcases, or four pairs of medium weight canvas coveralls used in outdoor work. Well, after hours and hours of hunting, I'm here to tell you that you have to give up on #4 unless you're prepared to go to a really serious commercial machine -- like one with a 100 pound capacity that will mean that, other than a basement location, you will need to reinforce your floor, plus likely plumbing and electricity re-fits. Look at commercial laundry equipment suppliers in your area, concentrating on "OPL" (on premises laundry) machines that are intended for salons/spas, restaurants, etc. (These are not coin-operated machines for laundromats, dorms, apartments.) The problem is that all of these machines are 3.3 cubic feet. Nothing larger is available in the US. Ok, so you have to do more and smaller loads of wash (federal regulators are historically oblivious to the value of your time) of towels or rags or other smaller items, but the real point is that it is now impossible to get those larger items -- a dog bed, a comforter, a sleeping bag, a 9x12' lightweight canvas tarp, a medium size rag rug, into that machine at all. So, off to the laundromat for you, or trip$ to the cleaner$ with the comforters. This is the "unintended" -- but in fact perfectly predictable -- consequence of the regulatory drive to force us into water "conservation." The problem is, the solution is bogus and probably doesn't save much if any water at all. Final word: our excellent regular appliance repairman told us that, in his long experience, HE machines -- both FL and TLs -- require about 4x the number of maintenance/repair calls of traditional machines. Consider the fuel consumption involved ther, not even counting the value of human time and the cost to the homeowner. He also reports that many, many customers tell him that they regularly put a load of wash through two full HE machine cycles in order to get the items really clean. Sorry for the "vent" here but I just want to do the wash effectively and efficiently and I'm frustrated that that's no longer possible.

We haven't set a date yet, but plan to have it sometime in July(before band camp, ROTC camp,& bible school.

Didn't even think of the smelly jelly and I've been making it for a while. Going to try it with some glow-in-the-dark powder I ordered and see how that works. I think they would love that.

Love the idea of head-to-toe!

I'm back....exhausted but back. Also partly brain dead, but had a GREAT time at ebay live!!

I would say to keep costs down somewhat pick say 5 items & let each girl do 3, soap plus 2 others. While the lotion/shampoo bases are not expensive, bottles & scent DOES get expensive.
YOU & your daughter could always pre make a couple small things like a smelly jelly for each girl, & a small container of bath tea. (make a big batch & split it among them)
It may get a bit hairy with a bunch of girls all working on 5-6 different things at a time, & making sure they don't use too much scent may be a hard thing to keep up with. If each gilr picks a single scent, you could pre measure out what they need for all 3 projects in advance, so there is no waste & they can't get into too much trouble with the scent. (At that age-if a little is good a lot will be GREAT seems to apply to everything.....food, perfume, boys etc.....LOL!!)

Hope this makes sense...I've been home for about 2 hours & beens answering email, checking auctions & trying to post on this board & the auction posting board....generally get caught up......haven't even unloaded the car.......
anyway, I'll be around. May be w/o the computer for about 1Â½ days while it gets new guts......end of the week or beginning of next week......they were SUPPOSED to do it while I was gone........
