New to soap making...many questions!!!

Hello! I am just starting out with MP, and have a TON of questions. Please excuse my ignorance, any input is greatly appreciated!!

1. Can you use metal bowls/ molds for MP? I read that fresh soap shouldn't contact metal, but suspect this is for making soap from scratch due to the lye.

2. How can you be sure that so-called natural bases do not contain added chemicals? (I was planning on buying 'Life of the Party' avocado cucumber base from Michael's, but no ingredients are listed).

3.How many times can you remelt the base (I have a feeling I might mess up a few before I get it right LOL)

4.What is the difference between glycerin and regular soap, and is there a 'natural' transparent soap?

5. What is the difference between soap and detergent- is one petroleum based?

most mp is not natural. i dare someone to find some that is 100% natural. i doubt there would be many if any at all. if it doesn't have the ingredients listed i would steer clear of that brand. you may need to visit their website to see the list though. there are some really nice bases out there though and i want to say bramble berry had a natural base (or at least a %age), but i could be wrong.

I can't believe that no on gave you the obligatory NeverMT link The NeverMT is a conversion kit for soap dispensers. Basically, it's a plastic tube that leads from the underside of the soap dispenser down to the jumbo-size bottle of dishwashing liquid you bought at Sam's Club. It comes w/ four (or so; can't remember) caps w/ predrilled holes for the tube to fit snugly in. The caps are in every standard size that soap bottles come in, so you can use the little wimpy bottles, too, if the jumbo size is too big to fit in the underside of your sink. It also comes w/ a Velcro strap you can screw to the back or side of you cabinet; the strap will wrap around the soap bottle to keep it from tipping over or getting scooched around. However, the predrilled holes in the caps fit so snugly that if you tipped the bottle over, it would take a while for soap to seep out. It's pretty cheap--$8. The shipping is almost as much, so..... buy 3, get 1 free, and give the extras to your friends who are also redoing their kitchen (or as Christmas presents). You'll still have to get under the sink when the bottle runs out, but if you can fit a jumbo size, it make take you a year or more to use it up. And you don't have to do anything other than unscrew the cap and switch it to the new bottle (well, unless you change bottle sizes and need a different-size cap--but you store the caps right ON the hose, so you won't even have to remember where you stashed them). This is the world's greatest gadget.

You might also want to try Home Depot. I got one that looks very similar (arm may be a bit longer)and it was only $14 CAD! Solid brass construction, and so far (about 5 months) working great! It's made by LDR - 'Soap and Lotion Dispenser'.

Add anything that isn't the base at trace--fragrances, herbs, leftover soap from other batches. If you are talking about REbatching, then wait until your base batch melts, & add your new items when you're about to mold, because rebatching temps are sustained for a longer time & can kill fragrance, herbal benefits, etc. I don't rebatch only because in my opinion it is kinda a waste of time-- you're not actually making new soap, you're just "melting" old soap. What I DO do, is make a new soap, pour a little into the molds at trace, add my old chopped or grated pieces, pour a little more new soap, stir it up, add more, pour more... until I have a nice layer cake-- all done, of course, at the speed of light so the new soap doesn't seize on me. Comes out chunky & pretty. Good luck.

I'm not sure I'm understanding your question, but I'll take a stab at an answer. I also bought a Moen faucet from Ebay and the owner gave me a free soap dispenser (Moen Aberdeen). There should be a plastic bottle that attaches to the unit to hold the soap. It screws in to the dispenser just like screwing a cap on. If this was not supplied, you can buy a Never MT (highly recommended). This is a $8.00 purchase that allows you to hook up to a large bottle of detergent so you don't have to fill the soap dispenser but maybe once a year (based on usage and bottle size). It's easy to install too. People here swear by it, and I learned about it from this forum and have one also. You can read more about it from the attached link. I'm pretty new to soapmaking myself. I've done M&P and rebatching, but no CP. As far as a natural M&P base, I just found this site http://www.wisterialane.com/index.asp?PageAction=COMPANY and she says her M&P soap bases are all natural, except the clear. I'm going to give her a try!

You cant really be sure unless you buy all natural lotion base that has the ingredients listed. You can usually get this in sizes from half a gallon and up in most online soap and cosmetic stores.

You can re-melt the base a whole lot, the ingredients you have in the soap will begin to break down with the heat so you may have to add more (fragrances / essential oil)

4. What is the difference between glycerin and regular soap, and is there a 'natural' transparent soap?
The difference between Glycerin and Synthetic "regular" soap is just that, the Glycerin. Glycerin serves as a emollient (soften and smooth skin) and humectants (absorbs water from the air and moistens skin).
