Fresh herbs okay?

Hello

I haven't posted here in quite awhile, but I was wondering if someone could tell me if using fresh mint in my melt and pour soap is advisable or should I dry the mint first? Thank you.

I do cp, but all I've ever used is dry. I think there might be a chance of spoilage if something with any moisture content got used. I could be wrong though...;-)

The info from NCHFP was very interesting. Rosemary, I'm sorry you felt as if you were being singled out. The responses were not intended as rude, especially from those specific people who replied to that post. They were merely pointing out that altering approved recipes changes the equation, which is also what Dave was referring to when he asked if the NCHFP reply also knew of your decision to double. I'm sure if you called and asked your extension office would tell you the same. Substitutions, additions, or assumptions based on a different recipe have the POSSIBILITY of having dire consequences, not an automatic death sentence. It's all dependent on what level of risk you're willing to assume. I'm sure the recipes are tested to be much safer than the absolute minimum, so as to not cause issues with inadvertent oopsies. People on this forum were right to correct a tip that could mislead other people in the future on something that might be a much bigger safety issue--who knows who might read that thread in two years. They do it to educate and help, not to put people down. Personally, I have learned so much from being a part of this forum and am grateful. Aside from safety issues, another reason to not increase herb/spice quantities is that they change flavor over time in the jar. Many herbs are really best with just a short (or no--basil) cook time, and longer just brings out bitter notes. I just opened a two-week old jar of apple butter that was amazing at canning time, but just that period has changed its flavor, causing the spice to become nearly overpowering.

We still have basil, sorrel and parsley but the dill has all gone to seed. Out here, the basil needs to grow in partial shade. The surprise this year, was that we had volunteer tomatoes that were large yellow heirloom tomatoes. They grew in the front yard next to my roses. Luckily I don't spray or use systemic on the roses. We must have picked 50 tomatoes from that one bush, I think they were lemon boy. My 3 yr. old twin grandchildren were throwing the spoiled tomatoes last year so that must be how I got volunteers this year. I had volunteer Black Krim also. The red tomatoes I planted didn't even bother to set tomatoes.

Never done it as I just microwave dry or dehydrate or freeze in ice cube trays. All our dried herbs are stored in jars with dessicant pack. It sounds as if the goal is more flavored salts than actual herb storage if I am reading it right and flavored salts isn't something I'd use much of. But if the goal is herb preservation via salt drying then it would seem to use a great deal of salt, right? If so that would make the process of just drying herbs for storage much more expensive and take up more storage room. But maybe I am mis-understanding something. Dave

I've dried parsley by making small bundles and hanging it in a dark place (closet, garage, etc.). It does not taste as good as fresh or frozen. It does, however, taste much better than store bought parsley flakes so I think it's worth it. Larger leafed herbs run the risk of molding rather than drying so make sure they aren't large, large bundles and that you've got plenty of ventilation around them. I let mine hang for several weeks to be SURE they are dry. Parsley will dry QUICKLY in a dehydrator (I have a $3 used one I bought at a garage sale - not fancy but it does the job ok. I prefer hanging herbs to dry, actually.) Chives/green onion tops I simply cut up into small pieces with kitchen shears and throw in a freezer bag and into the freezer. They hold up remarkably well. Perfect if you just need to throw them in an omelette or in a casserole. Maybe not quite as pretty if you're going to use them as a garnish but if it's the taste you're worried about, it's fine.

It is best to use a good dry herb because even in soap fresh herbs can mold or mildew and it would be a shame to ruin all the work of doing a batch of soap. I only do CP and goats Milk Rebatch but all I use are dried herbs.

It is my understanding (and I may be wrong) that even dried herbs eventually turn brown and yucky and may spoil, because they absorb moisture. The soap will not have a long shelf life. As I said, I may be wrong.

I've used dried rose petals & dried lavender in soap. Both turned brown, & discolored the soap. I don't know if they would have spoiled eventually-they looked so bad I threw them away.

Thanks for all the feedback everybody.
I hadn't gotten around to trying dried herbs yet. I think I'll stick to using the essential oils instead of the "real thing."
Now that I think about it, dried herbs might look really strange once they begin to come loose while washing, mixed in with the lather!

That was kinda my thinking about adding herbs and stuff to soap- I know they look nice but I really didn't want to use a bar of soap that had "stuff" coming off on me!

Hi-I am a new member and have been lurking for several
months--too afraid to try a message - but when it comes to
soapmaking I have to jump in! You all have saved me alot of mistakes! I use the soap and give it as gifts. I was
considering adding fresh herbs to my soaps, but was afraid
of just what you have discussed. My problem is finding
excellent essential oils, etc. Any suggestions?

Hi Ernie2- I've only bought essential oils from one company and that is Mountain Rose Herbs: (mountainroseherbs.com). I found them online probably from the advice of a fellow soaper on this forum. There's a thread on here called Yet Another Link (YAL) with tons of great links!
